Re: in nba history, who has been the hardest player to stop?
I can see Shaq from a physical standpoint for the modern era guys but he still wasn't on Jordan's level when it comes to being unstoppable. I saw Jeebs mention it earlier but man it is just beyond amazing for Jordan to have put up so many points and still shoot over 50 percent. The guy scord 35 a night in a season while shooting 54 percent. That is just unheard of and has never been done by a guard before and never will be done again. The season after that might have been ever better when he put up 33 a night on 54 percent shooting and handed out 8 assists a night. Shaq was a monster but he was never close to having a season like MJ putting up 37 a night. That doesn't even include his outrageous playoff numbers.
For the pre modern are guys it's Wilt and nobody else even deserves to be mentioned. His numbers and domination of the record books speaks for itself. People talk about his monsterous scoring numbers but also you have to remember that he is the best rebounder of all time too.Comment

Re: in nba history, who has been the hardest player to stop?
it seems as though the argument has become a three-way race between jordan and his efficiency and high volume scoring, shaq's sheer dominance over a mostly barren terrain and wilt's astounding numbers amidst an era unprepared for him.
perhaps we could look at the methods use to counter these guys.
jordan - play him very tight and very physically (the jordan rules/bad boys pistons). make him make contested jumpers and hack him on drives until he becomes a one-man show or passes to inferior teammates.
shaq - foul him or double him.
wilt - foul him or double him. or let him get his and let no one else contribute, then hound him late and have him pass to cold teammates.xbox gt - bmorerep87

there are so many players that were defensive nightmares,
but this group was extra tough to handle.
wilt
russel

kareem
michael ray richardson
patrick ewing

you knew what they were going to do and still could do absolutely nothing about it.
i can not consider anyone in the "no D allowed NBA" of today.Comment

Re: in nba history, who has been the hardest player to stop?
300 pound shaq u must be talkin about skinny shaq. Cause the 360 pound monsta that was on the Lakers was like an immovable object in the post. You know when other people get injured trying to foul you, your a beast ala jason williams. One-on- One nobody can bang with shaq daddy in the post.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

Remove Ewing, Richardson, and Russell and you've got a great list. Jabbar was incredible in his prime. as were Shaq, Wilt, and Hakeem. but notice - IN THEIR PRIMES. Jordan sustained it over a 13 or 14 year period in Chicago. putting up between 28 and 37 every year on 50% shooting. for a guard to be that unstoppable for that long. got to give it to him hands down.

Re: in nba history, who has been the hardest player to stop?
There is a huge difference between being tough and being talked about as one of the most unstoppable players of all time. I couldn't even put him on the level of somebody like Glen Robinson. He has no business being mentioned in this thread at all.Comment

Co-sign. Dude has the deadliest weapon in NBA history. He was unstoppable with it. In all the years I watched Kareem, I've never seen it blocked(someone told me Artis Gilmore did, but I can't verify that).Comment

Re: in nba history, who has been the hardest player to stop?
i think it has to be someone from the shaquille, wilt or kareem group.
with shaq, your only hope is to foul. no one in history has had the size and defensive chops to keep him out of position consistently. and it's hard to double team when he's catching the ball with two feet in the paint and his man reeling from an elbow.
with kareem, he was allowed to be forcibly shoved off the block, and he still managed to score the most points in the history of the sport.
with wilt, especially in his time, no one could physically contend. if placed today, he would be like dwight howard with a desire to score every time down the court.xbox gt - bmorerep87

He was on Mike and Mike today... said he thinks he's been blocked 2 or 3 times but never by the guy guarding him (weakside help). I believe it.Comment

not to stir anything up or question him, but I've seen a video where Chamberlain gets him twice in one sequence.
