That's saying something because he's still a pretty bad defender.

Dirk plays great D when he needs to. Countless times I say to myself "Great D by Dirk" over the course of a game. That's all you need. Don't have to be Ron Artest out there.

Naw. Still not in the top 10. But that doesn't make him any less of a player.

This. And like you said, it just needs to be emphasized that not being in the Top 10, isn't a knock on Dirk at all, it's a testament to the talent that has been in this league.

Agreed. Too much made out of being top ten top five top three. The NBA has seen some amazing players over time and being top 20 is an amazing accomplishment. Nothing wrong or shameful about not being top anything. It's all about being in that discussion/company

I honestly think Dirk is going to be a top 15 guy when his career is over, even if he never wins another championship. If he continues to be the best player on teams making playoff runs year after year for the rest of his career, he's top 15 for sure to me. Probably the second best PF of all-time IF you consider Duncan a PF (which I don't, since he guards centers, is guarded by centers, and plays like a center). Arguably the best PF ever to play IYAM.

Lol in all of NBA history? Really? Maybe the in the top 50 maybe in the top 25, but top 10. I don't see that. There were a lot of great players in the 60's, 70's and even 80's. Right now Dirk is the flavor of the week, but really top 10. I just don't see that.

The funny thing about saying a guy is top 5 or top 10, is if you add all the guys you consider at the level, it would be like 20 guys.
"In the morning he would read the Bible with another coach. Then, in the afternoon, he would go out and cheat kids who had probably saved up money from mowing lawns to buy those raffle tickets. That's Jim Tressel."

That's why I don't take that phrase seriously anymore, it's like a cool thing to say these days...Like a figure of speech for "great player"

top 10 overall maybe not cause you are going to get a list full of centers with jordan magic and bird.
he is in my top 5 PF list easily.

It's not unreasonable to include Dirk in a discussion of the top 20 all-time...but even then he's not a no-brainer, surefire lock. The idea that he's belongs in the top 10 is just silly.
