The more I think about it the harder it is to argue against Duncan. He simply did everything well.

That being said, I am sticking with my pick of Karl Malone.

Pg Magic (Oscar Robertson and Lebron as back ups)
sg Jordan (Kobe and drexler backups)
Sf Lebron (bird that was a tough decision)
Pf Hakeem twin tower set ( wilt back up)
C Shaquille (Russell back up another tough decision)

Defensively we shut the other opponent down outside shooting would be a problem but with Kobe, bird coming off the bench we could change up the squad based on match ups.

Nobody comes off the bench with "your all-time starting 5".

          Re: Your All-Time Starting 5

Here's my all time starting 5:

          PG: John Stockton
          SG: Michael Jordan
          SF: Paul Pierce
          PF: Tim Duncan
          C: Bill Russell

Now let me give you a bit of background on my team. It's built around two things: Jordan's perimeter game and the pick and roll (the greatest play in basketball).

If played in today's game, this is the lineup that I feel would give me the best shot to win. You have two great help and man to man defenders down low in Russell and Duncan, two great shooters in Stockton and Pierce, and two guys who can score on anyone down the stretch but also make smart basketball plays in Duncan and Jordan.

For my PG, I wanted a shooter to go along with Jordan, a good defender, and a guy who could run anyplay but excelled at the pick and roll. Chris Paul, Gary Payton, John Stockton, Nate Archibald, Steve Nash, and Isiah Thomas all came to mind, but Stockton was the ideal guy for this position. A rugged defender with great basketball instincts. He's also deadly if someone decides to double MJ or Duncan.

My whole team is based around the best player to ever play. I'm running a play for him 60% of the time downcourt as he is one of the few players that nobody could ever really stop on a consistent basis. I want the ball in his hands...not Magic, Bird's, or Lebron's.

At SF, I wanted a guy who was a good shooter long range but also a premium defender. LBJ, T-Mac, Bird, and Pippen were all under consideration here. Pierce's defensive performances on Kobe and Lebron in the playoffs sold me though. He also has a tremendous midrange game to fall back on which would ocassionally take some pressure off MJ.

The PF position is to me, the easiest position to pick besides the SG position...perhaps even easier if you want to utilize MJ to his full abilities. It's a shame how underappreciated Duncan is. He can post up, face up, pass, plays the pick and roll game perfectly, offensive rebound, defensive rebound, play man to man D, helpside D, pick and roll D. Everything. Perhaps the most complete and fundamentally perfect basketball player ever relative to his position.

The C position was tough between Hakeem and Russell. I went with Russell because of his leadership and tenacity. Plus relatively, I think he is rangier than Hakeem on the defensive end
"Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."

just out of curiosity - why would you have Wilt (7'1") back up your power forward, and Russell (6'8") back up your center? why not flip flop that?

Wilt was more versatile offensively, Russell the better defender of the paint and basket.

Its my squad I stick with my 5 just wanted to add some insight in why I went the way I did. Basketball isn't just about a starting 5 it is at minimum an 8 man rotation.

we understand that and agree, but the question only pertains to "your all-time starting 5".

I'm thinking the Lebron over Bird argument just got a big kick in the mouth last night. Not sure how anyone can defend that stance after that SLICK triple single.

well, to be fair, we kinda killed the argument a few pages back by showing how the 3 spot is bird, and then everyone else is vying for #2.

All-time overall? Without putting too much thought into how the play styles mesh:

                          PG - Magic Johnson
                          SG - Michael Jordan
                          SF - Larry Bird
                          PF - Tim Duncan
                          C - Hakeem Olajuwon

All-time for what I'd want to run?

                          PG - Steve Nash
                          SG - Ray Allen
                          SF - Shawn Marion
                          PF - Amare Stoudemire
                          C - Dennis Rodman

The fact that people couldn't see LeBron's coming greatness, may God bless them. They were so convinced. He was already an All-Time great player when the thread was made too.

The fact that people had Dr. J over LeBron is just...

And I'd say LeBron has passed Larry Bird at this point
