He had solid defense (got beat off the dribble a decent amount though), don't know how his lateral movement will be after those knee injuries.

A team with Vince Carter on it and he isn't the one to quit!

Mavs and Lamar Odom part ways

Lamar Odom's brief and bumpy ride with the Dallas Mavericks has come to an abrupt end.
The Mavericks and Odom spent Easter Sunday working out a parting, according to sources close to the situation, that frees the struggling Odom to leave the team immediately without actually being released.

"The Mavericks and I have mutually agreed that it's in the best interest of both parties for me to step away from the team," Odom said in a statement to ESPN.com. "I'm sorry that things didn't work out better for both of us, but I wish the Mavs' organization, my teammates and Dallas fans nothing but continued success in the defense of their championship."

Sources said Monday that Odom's departure will be immediate and that the Mavericks intend to simply list him as inactive for the rest of the season instead of outright releasing him, leaving open the possibility that they could still trade him after the season in conjunction with the draft. Any team that has Odom on its roster as of June 29 must buy him out by that date for $2.4 million or otherwise accept responsibility for the full $8.2 million that Odom is scheduled to earn in 2012-13.

I was thinking they were going to outright release him. But I guess that would be a bad business move on Cuban's part. Wonder what teams will step up trade wise.

            I don't.

Given all the pain and suffering that's followed Lamar Odom at nearly every turn, he's still maintained a positive outlook and has drawn inspiration from it.

His mother, Cathy Mercer, died of colon cancer when he was 12. His grandmother Mildred Mercer, who raised him, died in 2004. His son Jayden, at only 7 months old, died of sudden infant death syndrome in his crib in 2006. Yet, Odom has persevered, honored them in pregame rituals and often thinks about them for both guidance and perspective.

The pain struck again this month. Odom attended a funeral in New York for his 24-year-old cousin, who he told The Times' Broderick Turner was killed. Then he was a passenger in a car that collided with a motorcycle and struck a 15-year-old pedestrian who later died.

"I think the effects of seeing [my cousin] die and then watching this kid die, it beat me down. I consider myself a little weak," Odom told Turner. "I thought I was breaking down mentally. I'm doing a lot of reflecting."

Some of that reflection, Turner reports, includes Odom reading a book, "Embraced by the Light," by Betty J. Eadie, which focuses on prayer and daily devotion. Odom also told Turner, "I may need to see a psychologist."

He had to endure a boatload of tragedy prior to last year and he ended up being SMOTY. The bottom line, is that I KNOW he can ball. I'm not saying it's not tough to go through (I'm sure we have all lost loved ones before).

He could have been handled everything so much better. The D-League crap was very unnecessary. Take a season off if the load is too much to bear. I could understand that better than dogging it for a year. I think the Mavs are a compassionate organization and they have supported him throughout.

Odom probably should've just taken the year off. He was already shaken by those off-the-court tragedies and then, the trade for CP3 that did and didn't happen shook him, as did the eventual trade to Dallas.

I like Odom's game when he's in the right mindset. Hopefully he gets some help and comes back next year with a renewed passion for the game, because I think he can definitely help any team he plays for when he's focused on basketball.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he doesn't deserve blame for what has happened with this situation but I do believe he deserves somewhat of a pass.

This was the best way to go about things for both sides. Just agree it didn't work out and move on. The Mavs don't need this distraction while they're trying to defend their title and Odom obviously needs to take a step back for a moment and deal with his off-court issues and then go from there.

Exactly. And if he couldn't handle it in a way that he could play effective basketball for money he should've retired or taken the year off. Instead he wasted the Mavs' organization, his teammates, Mavs' fans and his own time. I don't see why this is so hard to understand.

It may seem like I don't like Lamar, that's not true at all. I liked his game a lot before the season, I was super excited to have him come here, and I was the first one to be super excited when he did show something and I think Lamar is a really nice dude that has had a lot of bull**** happen to him and it sucks, but he's getting paid money to play basketball and if he couldn't do that, he shouldn't have.

Ever think maybe basketball was his way of getting these things off his mind?

Go ahead and make the "but he makes millions of dollars" comment, but I couldn't pay you millions to deal with some of the things he's had to deal with.

You come off as a callous with that post. Why so defensive and insensitive?

                              Because it's your Mavs?

Besides, the subject wasn't other players, it's LO. To top it off, what he earns has nothing to do with it as well. Not sure how the "paid millions" is relevant.

Love LOs game will always have a place in Laker lore. So versatile. Just loved watching him run the floor with each ball after he grabbed a board and finishing. Great passer. Just one of my favorite players going back to the Clippers. It's unfortunate that it didn't pan out but I hope he can get it together and have a proper closing chapter to his career. Would love to see him help a team like the Wolves or another up and comer catch the playoffs and just let him play his game(being unbiased). Don't know if he has it in him to play again though.
