As a old head I do have to agree with OP, as a whole the older teams would have a hard time playing with modern players however you can cherry pick the great players back then and put them here now and they would still ball Oscar Robertson Wilt, Pistol Pete would be fine.. But when you get to the 80's Lakers Celtics and move forward they would hang great, and 90's teams would kill the current teams.

For me its hard to compare as the two eras did not have the same training, equipment and technology.
I wonder what NBA players would be like playing in chucks like they did back then. I don't think we would be seeing those cuts like we usually do.Comment

Not only having to play in less than desirable shoes, but I wonder how some of these pampered athletes would take having to travel on trains, buses, and charter flights (if they were lucky), while staying in average hotels and motels across the country. Or how guys like Kobe, LeBron, & Dwight would do if they were discriminated against for their color in every city they played in.

Very good points there too. Other disadvantages older era players had was the amount of education of the game that was exposed to them as well.
Todays player starts learning and playing organized basketball as early as 5. During the 80's and 90's was my childhood and at least I can watch basketball multiple times a week on television and watch highlights on 24 hour sports networks. Todays child can watch every NBA basketball game from anywhere if they have satellite or internet. They are exposed to all different styles and ways to play the game with multiple players.
How often can a kid watch an NBA game back then? And how many different teams and players did they watch? I'm sure it was very limited and majority of the time the exposure they got were just the people in their community. Let's not forget that basketball was far less exposed than baseball and football.
Also another point is who was teaching/coaching this game back then? Today's coach has exposure to multiple styles of offense and defense they can teach and also the amount of coaches they can learn/mentor from is at a by far larger amount.
Back then they probably had 1 film reel "How to play the game of basketball" and probably 1 book to learn from. It could be a reason why that era had fundamentals because that's all they all learned from the same book.Comment

I have the same argument over here nba vs euroleague I know it's sounds funny but most people here think that nba is a show just for the highlights and they don't play real basketball their problem in my situation is that they don't know what nba basketball is like cause they don't watch the games they have an image on their head from the highlights. The same problem is with the guys that never watched old games just youtube or older guys that don't watch the game today.Comment

that would be like me saying that "the Premiere League is just a show and the MLS plays real footie", which would be quite absurd. The Premiere League is quite a show, but they obviously play real footieLast edited by ZB9; 12-07-2011, 01:20 PM.Comment

Re: Old School vs. today...you can't be serious
There is a reason that when "real" eurobasketball teams come over to play the "flashy" NBA teams during preseason, the NBA teams always beat the ever loving **** out of them.
NBA players are the most skilled, athletic players on the planet.
As for the Old School vs Today...There are some guys who probably wouldn't be as big as they were back then, but I'd say the translation rate from HOF for each generation would be roughly 95% compatible to today's game.Too Old To Game Club

Sigh... Again I say, WHY do people constantly refer to modern players playing back in the day?? Let's reverse it and bring OLD players forward to today. Those big, physical meatheads would foul out constantly.
Those "earth-shattering" screens would simply be flagarant fouls.Comment

None of that has ANY bearing on this conversation.

Kendrick Perkins and Shaquille O'Neal were earth-moving screeners in the modern game. How many open shots did they create for their teammates, as opposed to how many fouls were they whistled for? Screeners like Reed, Wilt, and Lucius Jackson would rip holes in these defenses.Last edited by AlexBrady; 12-08-2011, 10:35 AM.Comment
