Wow... I am embarrassed to call myself an NBA fan after what Stern just did. For anyone saying it wasn't a fair deal is completely beyond me. The Lakers were getting what they wanted, Rockets would of gotten Gasol and enough cap room to sign Nene, and the Hornets got a hell of a deal with four players and a first round pick. Hopefully Chris Paul sues the NBA because of this.

Owners can nix deals before they get done, same thing happened last year with Charlotte and Toronto between Tyson Chandler/Jose Calderon, the deal should have never been leaked out before the deal was finalized.

I haven't heard anywhere that Paul said he'd play for only the Lakers. I've heard that he'd be cool with the Clippers (coming from his mouth). I heard that he'd like to play for the Knicks. And I've heard that he'd like to play for the Lakers but never that he wanted to be traded there or he'd hold out.

I also heard that there was a deal with the Celtics and that he didn't want to go there because the big 3 are on their last legs and he didn't want to go into another rebuilding situation. That talk was a while ago bc a couple of days after was about how Rondo's feelings were going to be hurt bc he's so sensitive. Back then they didn't say anything about demands to be traded to the Lakers.

Either way, he still has a leg to stand on and it's the fault of the league structure. The bottom line is he can tell Boston or whoever that he won't resign if they trade for him and that's that. He does have that power being in the last year of his contract. As long as the rules work this way, players will have this kind of power. That's what makes this move so bad. Any other team, this wouldn't have happened... it couldn't. It only happened bc the league owns the Hornets. Any other team would've made the trade so they don't end up with nothing. The hornets will end up with nothing which is much worse than any description of how bad they want to make this trade seem.

Supposedly the Celtics were fine with him saying that he wasn't going to sign an extension, but CP3 supposedly refused to go to Boston at all despite the fact that he's under contract.

Even if that's true, the Hornets could've said fine and let him hold out. There just isn't a scenario where it makes sense for Stern to get involved, imo.

1. This has only been brewing for a week, and was announced before it had been officially approved. I fault whomever leaked the terms.

2. In a lockout that was supposed to be about revenue sharing, competetive balance, and most of all, players no longer being able to pout their way out of town, this would have been a disaster move in principle, and allowed LAL the cap space to get Howard also. Obviously, the Lakers were stacked, and thus have the ammo to make this kind of deal, and NO would have gotten BY FAR the best deal out of all the teams that saw their franchise player walk, but again, letting another player twist arms like this would look terrible for the league. Stern had no choice.

That what is what it was supposed to be about. Under the old system, small market teams were irrelevent and losing money. Under the new system, they are irrelevent and breaking even.

Thank you WW. If the Cs really had the deal done then it's done. Cp3 no shows? Get disciplined. Like every other player has. That is why I'm super skeptical about this when CP3 was dealt to Boston scenario

That's a problem you run into in the information age, you find about pretty much everything the minute it happens, which is why we get flooded with crap rumors and are left with a lot of stuff that really doesn't hold weight, then leaves us to sift through it.

Yes, actually we just witnessed it. The Hornets aren't governed by Dell Demps, they are controlled by the other 29 NBA owners, so if they felt the deal was unfair - whether financially or otherwise - they had the right in it being voided. Why should the owners have to take in $15+ million in additional salary, making them a luxury tax team, and allow Chris Paul to dictate where he is traded? While at the same time giving the Lakers remaing "assets" to possibly trade for Dwight Howard. They'd be getting ****ed over three times by my estimation. I thought deal would hurt the Lakers more than help, but the other 26 owners didn't feel like it was in their best interest.

Larry Coon's critique hit's the nail square on the head for me.

• That the Hornets don't need to trade Paul due to his contract status and the high likelihood that he would leave as a free agent next summer.
• That the entire league didn't know that Demps was dealing from a position of weakness, and that this would lower other teams' trade offers.
• That any team trading for Paul wasn't assuming the risk of his surgically repaired knee and his contract status which could make him a one-year rental.
• That the reigning sixth man, a productive power forward, a high-scoring guard, another young and improving guard, and a first-round pick in an unusually deep draft weren't the best the Hornets could get under the circumstances.
• That three of the smarter GMs in the league needed to be overruled on their basketball decision-making ability.

I'm glad the trade was vetoed. I mean for god sake, at least give your team 3-5 teams that you'd be willing to play for. That "trade me to the Lakers or I won't agree to go anywhere else even though I'm not supposed to have a choice in the matter anyway" **** is ridiculous.

I strongly disagree. If the guy is in the last year of his contract and he KNOW for a fact that he is not returning, tell your team where you want to go so that they can trade you and get value for you. That is the best thing you can do for a team if you know you are not returning. NO damn near got a brand new starting 5 for him. Now tell me what Cleveland got for Lebron? I was EXTREMELY pissed about the veto because it left NO in a horrible position. That team is 5 times better after the trade than before. Now if a player is forcing his way out with 2 years left, thats one thing...but with 1 year left, if i'm the GM, i'm encouraging him to bolt.

Either way, given this situation and throwing out all that other hate people seem to harbor from past events (bringing up playoff series' here? Really?) I can't help but feel this is only because of one reason:

The NBA owns the Hornets.

They should not be owning a team and getting involved in this. They should have sold the Hornets franchise ASAP to a group that would be interested. Are you willing to tell me there aren't millionaires out there that would want an NBA franchise? No one at all, in the world?

The fact the league, which is supposed to be impartial in all dealings, owns a team that has an ultimate goal of being competitive and winning a championship tells me that someone will have an issue with any move they make.

Only way to stop it is eliminating true free agency or forcing every player into free agency and eliminating extensions.

Otherwise kudos to the player for giving their franchise a chance to redeem value on the talent they're about to lose.
