Re: NBA Off Topic
This is pretty damn cool.
Today I am pleased to announce that Basketball-Reference.com now has a box score for every game played in NBA history. Here are a few examples:
Now before you get too excited, let me explain: the box scores from 1946-47 through 1984-85 are scans of actual box scores. What that means is that we don't have those games in our database, so you can't search for things like the most points scored by a player during the the 1971-72 NBA season. I should also note that almost all of these box scores are abbreviated, i.e., they only contain field goals, free throws, and points for the players. That said, I think this is a valuable addition to the site that will be enjoyed by many.
Of course, it is our goal to one day have these games in a database-friendly format. However, given that the process would require a significant amount of data entry we're still thinking about the best way to accomplish that task. Until then, we hope you enjoy this new feature, and as always please let us know if you have any comments or questions.Originally posted by bradtxmaleI like 6 inches. Re: NBA Off Topic
Thoughts on this?
We knew there would be effects on the quality of play in the NBA after a five-month lockout. We knew that a compacted season would lead to more fatigue, more injuries, less cohesiveness and an effect on stats.
We just didn't know it would be quite this bad.
From the Miami Herald:Field-goal shooting, free-throw shooting and three-point shooting in the NBA are all down at least 15 percent. Turnovers have increased by an average of .8 per game, the largest jump in 29 years.Bosh said that in addition to the increased miscues, players have less time to learn from their mistakes.“We have to really pay attention to film, you have to pick things up on the fly, you’re not always able to go through live situations all the time,” Bosh said. “It’s a moment where you have to use your experience as a basketball player and pick things up without actually practicing them.”via Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade will travel to Detroit but playing status unclear - Miami Heat - MiamiHerald.com.
The biggest problem seems to be that when things go badly for a team, they don't just go bad, they turn into an abject disaster. The Magic's 56-point outburst Monday is a prime example. The Celtics' defense definitely deserves credit, but that kind of output stands alongside a handful of Charlotte and Sacramento games in terms of how bad things can get. Tuesday night the Grizzlies only scored three field goals in the third quarter. The signs are everywhere. The exhaustion is hammering teams' abilities to recover, especially when it's not just games on back-to-backs, but often road trips that involve multiple games on a different coast.
There's no solution to be held this year, but the standards for the league need to be re-evaluated. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has a clue about such things and has said that stats this year are "an aberration." It makes you wonder what teams are benefiting and what teams are struggling more than they would have in a normal season. At this pace, March could be a basketball snuff film.#RespectTheCultureComment

Should've thought of that **** when they were sitting around taking weeks between negotiating sessions and Stand United and all that other garbage that was going on in August and September and so on.Comment

Re: NBA Off Topic
I think there's a great deal of validity to that write-up. This is a hell of a lot of basketball to be played in a short amount of time. During a regular season, you'd only have a handful of back to backs. Most of the time, you're getting two days rest between games. Sometimes even more.
Fatigue is definitely playing a factor in statistics for this year. I think we can all attest to this. I know for a fact I haven't seen this much sloppy basketball in the 20 years I've been watching the game. Players have no time to nurse nagging injuries, no time to prepare for an opponent, no time to correct internal mistakes, make adjustments etc.
I'd still rather see this than to have no basketball at all.Originally posted by J. ColeFool me one time that's shame on you. Fool me twice can't put the blame on you. Fool me three times, **** the peace sign, load the chopper let it rain on you.

Re: NBA Off Topic
Stern wanted to force the league to start on Christmas so he could get that $$$$. Shortened (non-existant) training camps play a major factor in this.Comment
