If David Stern hadn't screwed the Chris Paul trade, then the Lakers would have been looming as the favorites of the West again. That trade was to address the glaring weakness in the PG area of the Lakers and an obvious bait for Dwight Howard to come to LA.

Odom was traded to Dallas because he requested a trade after Stern vetoed the CP3 trade. He couldn't mentally suck it up like Gasol did.

Back to the original topic, Lakers will be playoff contenders but as much as it pains me to admit it, will not be title contenders. Fisher and Walton should really freaking retire

Stern didn't screw nothing he basically saved the Hornets franchise from a horrible future.
What good are Luis Scola & Kevin Martin for a rebuilding franchise? The Hornets would have been stuck in mediocrity for so long. As we know, in the NBA it's good to either be contending or hoping to score in the lottery.
In the Clippers trade the Hornets got a great pick from the Timberwolves, and plenty of young pieces. David Stern did not screw the Lakers.

        A) the Lakers are never done.

        B) For the last time, Stern didn't screw the Lakers. The NBA OWNS the Hornets, and league owners have a right to intercede if they see fit.

Im the biggest Laker fan but i see a new Laker era coming.I see Buss kid trying to stamp his mark on the Lakers.I honestly see Kobe requesting a trade to the New York Knicks where Phil Jackson will make his return next year.Phil and Kobe new motivation to crush Pat Riley and the Miami Heat.

Re: Are the La lakers done??

Same drum I've been banging on since pre-season for the Lakers' season.

                1) Learning how to play together. Very happy with the pace at which it seems the team is learning to play within Mike Brown's "offense". McRoberts playing hard ball at both ends, Troy Murphy is always willing to pull the trigger when he's open, and he's surprisingly open often and very efficient. Their defense is much improved, but I still absolutely hate their perimeter D. Kobe leaves too much space on guys, and the PG's are... yeah. Blake and Fish might as well be playing D with only one leg. It's equivalent.

                2) Andrew Bynum will dictate the success (or failure) of the Lakers' season. The Lakers could very well go 0-4 the first four games without him, and I still wouldn't consider that an indictment on the team. Missing your starting center is a huge blow to a team with plenty of other changes to adjust to. When McRoberts and Troy Murphy have their minutes set to where they should be, and McRob is coming off the bench, the Lakers will look much stronger.

                3) Still hard to rule out whatever the Lakers may (or may not) try to do. Temperature wise it feels like Dwight isn't on their radar on a large scale. I could definitely see them trying to flip Pau + into a starting quality PF (or maybe they end up trusting McHustle with it) and a much needed upgrade at the PG. Either way, they will likely give the roster + Bynum some time to play together before making any drastic changes one way or the other.

You're delusional if you think Kobe will request a trade to any team. And I mean D-E-L-U-S-I-O-N-A-L. Yeah he asked before, but now he wants to cement his legacy with the Lakers. And I highly doubt Phil Jackson will come back to coach the Knicks. Lakers will always be the Lakers and they will recover and win more and more titles.

I just don't know where did you get that idea of Phil coming back to coach the NYK, lol.
Hope is lost. Faith is broken. A fire will rise.

im not sure what you mean by "done". if you mean they will not compete for a title this year, then yes i agree they will not make it far in the playoffs and will not be in the title contention. but they are not done long term, its the freakin lakers, come on, they will recover within a year or 2, get a guy like Dwight or somebody who will attract even more talent to LA and then they will be competing for a title again, like always

I agree with Champion. I think they take a step back this year.

2-2 in the 4 games in 5 nights without Bynum was more than I expected. Especially with how we blew that Bulls game.

                                Bynums back Saturday.
