If you were Danny Ainge...
Celtics are currently the 7th seed in the East and 8.5 behind 1st place Chicago. Garnett and Allen are in their last year of their contract and look old. Do you still believe the C's are a piece away from being legitimate contenders to win a title, or are you ready to start selling and rebuilding the team around Rondo. What would you do?Tags: None -

Im not quite sure. Im certaily not sold on the idea of using Rajon Rondo as the centerpiece of my team. -

The key to Boston's offense is Ray Allen. If he is getting open shots, the Celtics are executing their offense to perfection. Apparently, Ainge has little understanding of the off-ball game.
Rondo's offensive capabilities haven't expanded enough to build around him. Still, he is a very good player.Comment

Deciding on Rondo is the first thing that needs to be done. Personally I like Rondo as a premium piece.

Re: If you were Danny Ainge...
Not Sold on Rondo being the centerpiece. Top 5 PG no doubt, one of the best if not the best defensive PG in the league. If you can't build around that what can you build around.
With that being said, I'm not ready to give up this year. But I'm pretty darn close.Wolverines Packers Cubs Celtics

I'm an old school guy I guess. Just don't love the idea of building a team around a guard in the first place.Comment

Centerpiece would be a strong word for any non top 10 to 15 player you would take to begin your team (which is obviously arguable but id venture to say there's at least 10 players you'd take before Rondo), but he's a second tier premium piece. Not sure they can't find pieces to rock it with Rondo, can't imagine him not in green.

I don't think they should blow it up this year. They haven't had a full roster out there for more than a few games at a time this season. They started without Pierce & Pietrus, then lost Rondo (for a while), and Garnett (briefly). Right now, Brandon Bass is out, Keyon Dooling is having trouble staying on the court. Not to mention, Jeff Green will never play this year. I think Ainge had a potentially solid team, but injuries have ruined any chance they've had at developing a legitimate chemistry and continuity.
As far as building around Rondo..I can't see that working. Unless your point guard is along the lines of a Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, Deron Williams type - I don't think you can do that. Rondo isn't near the offensive player that they are. He's a tremendous passer, but he's no threat to go off for 40 points on a given night. Also, I think Rondo is the type of player who is best suited to be a complimentary point guard, surrounded by guys like Allen & Pierce.

I would rebuild around Rondo, I would keep Pierce and Allen.Bobcats win 35th game. Some really weird news in the NBA. A betting scandal is revealed! But... that is not the strangest news!

That's the beautiful thing about Rondo, his contract is a damn bargain. Don't think the Cs should bandaid what they have if it means tying up salary cap they can free up. Pierce really the only salary jam they have past this season.
I can see them trying to dangle Allen/Garnett as expiring but not sure if it'd be worth what they can fetch in terms of talent and salary commitments. Might be best to give it another run.

Re: If you were Danny Ainge...
I agree that they need to do something and that Garnett looks old, but I don't think Ray Allen looks all that bad. He's actually be their most consistent offensive player this year. His problem is that he isn't getting nearly the number of shots he should get. He's taking 10 per game, when he should, realistically, be taking 13 or 14, considering his percentages.

Shoot me. I always thought it was about making the players around you better and winning. Not one of those other PGs have a chip. They have some hardware between them...but not that grand prize.

Come on man. Rondo wasn't nearly the player he is now when they won that title and you'll get a hell of an argument that at this moment(he's playing better than he's ever played) he's not better than Rose or CP3.Comment

Re: If you were Danny Ainge...
Yeah, probably better to give it one more run, and let their contracts expire. Then move in a new direction.
After this year they'll have 35+ million coming off the books. JuJaun Johnson has played some good minutes for them. There is no reason not to believe that he can't continue to develop and be a contributor with Brandon Bass next year.
Then they will be in the position to throw big money at Howard, seeing it doesn't look he is going to be traded anytime soon, and go get another young guard. OJ Mayo maybe?Comment

I think you can build a team around Rondo, cant believe people are saying you cant build a team around him because his offense isnt great? Jason Kidd wasnt that great offensively but still made it work in his earlier years. Rondo is the best player on BOS team IMO, without him they dont go anywhere.
If they can somehow get Dwight Howard and add another young perimeter player they will be off to a good start to the rebuild. I wonder if they are going to offer Eric Gordon a contract to play at the 2, he is undersized and injury prone, but would also compliment Rondo very well.Comment
