If they had guaranteed that fourth year then things would have been interesting.

Celtics/Heat isn't even CLOSE to being as big a rivalry as Lakers/Suns. By the time the Miami Heat even started their franchise, the Lakers and Suns had already faced each other five times in the playoffs in the 18 years prior. There's hatred between Boston and Miami, but by and large, the rivalry is as manufactured and hollow as one half of that rivalry is.
In recent history it's closer than it gets credit for. In long term it isn't. Its like Celtics-76ers is a much bigger rivalry over the history of the league but not in the last 2 or 3 years even with last year playoff series.

Yeah I meant in terms of the money, your right on the team option part.

            Yes, that's my point.

While Celtics/Heat is hot right now, the Celtics/76ers or Celtics/Knicks are the historical rivalries that have been relatively dormant recently. Both the Suns/Spurs AND the Suns/Lakers rivalry have been super hot in recent years, excluding all the long-range history.

Let's just make sure we're clear for the future. Championships do not a rivalry make. The Heat and Knicks didn't win a single championship in the 90's, but try and tell me there was no legit rivalry there.

But that doesn't count due to the fact that they didn't meet for 10 yrs and the Heat were a new franchise lol. Two championship contending teams with bad blood don't make a rivalry. It never happened lol.

Bryan Colangelo saved his job and his pride with the Lowry trade. Houston is unraveling big time.

Now Derozan, Ed Davis are next to go.

Yeah the point of my argument which you understood was that I thought currently you could make the argument that the Celtics Heat was "hotter".
I don't live in the Arizona/ California region so I know that I don't quite understand the current state of the rivalry as much with regards to geography, etc. I just wanted people to clarify their point on what their standards were for a rivalry in the NBA. Long term, short term, geographical factors, etc.

I would agree that the Suns Lakers rivalry has more characteristics of a long term rivalry like division rivals in the NFL. But currently the Heat Celtics rivalry is hotter because the main cast of characters have played against each other a ton in the playoffs since 08 ( Lebron played the Celtics 4 times out of 5, Wade 3 times).

And while we're on the subject, Celtics-76ers is a much better rivalry than the Celtics-Knicks. So take that Knicks fans!

Fields is overpaid by about 2 million max. It becomes a forgotten issue if he reverts back to his rookie year form when everyone had a hard-on for him.

Agreed but when two teams are consistently contenders it helps make the rivalry because of the implications of the series. Of the 4 or 5 times the Knicks and Heat met, I would say they were both contenders 3 of the 4 seasons ( 97, 99, 2000) I believe the Knicks were really injured in 98.
