I'm assuming as commissioner I have unlimited power?

-Reduce the season to 60 games.
-Get rid of the draft lottery
    -End RFA
-Make the playoffs best of 5
    -Institute a hard cap
    -Get rid of max deals
    -Eliminate all exceptions
-Eliminate all team tv deals/sign a league wide tv deal

Good teams are rewarded they get titles and playoffs, the draft is for parity without that NBA or any sport would be essentially done
It does say if you was commish of the NBA. I can't speak on baseball not a fan of that sport an the NFL is ran beautifully.

Im not questioning the players heart, it's the owners. Bobcats sucked due to MJ being ****** at building a team, Hornets were transitioning out of the CP3 era an was missing a few guys (Eric Gordon).

I stated my opinion was over the top. It's just disgusting the Larry O Brian trophy isn't motivation to every Owner. Some are just complacement with having a star to fill up seats for a few years.

If the draft is for parity might as well get rid of it. Most of these guys are getting together to team up with each other eventually. Small market teams are in a no win situation, draft a star he leaves to team with another. Their at an even greater disadvantage if said owner doesn't give a **** about winning.

I want to be able to watch the NBA the way I watch football, regardless of match ups an know im going to get a competitive good gm more times then not.

Flopping, constant bitching from a few stars ala Kobe/Wade etc, the infamous ref Tim, David Stern, an these stars plotting to team up instead of facing off, players holding a franchise hostage is not enough to rub you the wrong way?

So to update, I'd go with the cap system from the NFL to create actual parity, making it hard to assemble too many stars on one team.

Re: What would you do as commisoner?

A Hard cap will help, but none of your other ideas regarding the draft will help make it to how you want the NBA to be like.

It's unrealistic to ask for the NBA to be like the NFL, there are so many differences in the NFL/NBA that it's impossible to make it similar in today's NBA. The talent drop off in the NFL is less steep in the NBA, you lose your star LB in the NFL and there may be a drop off but it's not nearly as close to losing your star player in the NBA.

You're operating under too many assumptions, not every star in an NBA draft is going to leave their team, etc. I don't like star holding some teams under hostage, but it happens and without that star the team would have been irrelevant for those years he was probably there for.

I'll say this hoops and pigskins are different in a lot of ways. However the NBA could learn a lot from the NFL.

Sure there's the talent level, but the way the NBA is set up with max contracts it makes more sense to take a little less and just pair with other superstars to win titles. If LeBron could make 30million a year in salary with a hardcap we're much more likely to see parity.

Not really, I see the humble stars in the league Durant, Rose etc. I used most not all, a select few will an I won't be shocked one bit.

I know Cleveland didn't literally get rid of Boozer, it's just how I speak. I do believe they could've done more to keep him before letting it get to the point it did and him walking away. I know ultimately it was his choice but for whatever number of reasons he didn't find it enticing enough to stay.

Listen, my point was that Cleveland as an organization dropped the ball BIG time. They had the perfect piece to build around and threw it away. Look at all the money LeBron brought to that ****ty org. I'm glad he left. He should've left years ago but he was too loyal.

When your team comes off a 60+ win year and then goes to the cellar after ONE player leaves... Think about it. LeBron pretty much carried that organization his entire tenure there. Having rules in place that may have forced him to stay would've been a disgrace.

Sorry if you guys disagree but that's how I see it. Glad you all focused on one point of my post because of how I say things. Still doesn't change the fact Cleveland failed hard and it was their fault.

Actually your post just showed you don't know much about the actual situation, so it makes sense that some Cavs fans who do would challenge that. Based on your one statement they got rid of Lebron too... that's how big of miss step that is, and that's too big to just pass off as "how I speak".

And with the new addition to your point, you're acting like Lebron left and everything else stayed exactly the same. They lost a TON of pieces last year. Obviously losing the best player in the NBA is going to have a huge effect on any team, but the bigger effect it seems to have to fans is it makes them ignore all the other players that left, got moved or were hurt for most of the season.

One in-game rule I'd love to change is the way teams play defense. It irked me from day one this defensive rule that they have in the game today. Either allow teams to play a true zone or go back to strictly man-to-man defense. None of this pseudo-zone crap.

Re: What would you do as commisoner?

The biggest reason parity is nonexistent in the league today is because there are to many teams. Parity has slowly diminished since the 80s because new teams kept getting added. To the point where now some teams best players wouldn't have even cracked the rotation back then. So if I were commissioner I wld fold 4 teams. Less teams equals more good players on every team. I would also change the playoff format to the top 14 teams regardless of conference (top 2 get a 1st rd bye). Change it back to 5777 format. And to stop tanking the lottery teams would have to play a single elimination tournament the week before the playoffs start. lastly I would change the season to 70 games starting closer to thanksgiving and schedule the finals after the end of the Stanley Cup Finals so the NBA wouldn't have to fight for ratings.

Best post of them all imo. I agree with all of this. I wouldn't worry about the lottery and wouldn't have the single elimination tournament but wouldn't be mad at that. I also don't think the NBA is ever competing with the Stanley Cup (sorry hockey fans) but I still like your schedule lay out.

I think people think teams tank based on how it feels and watching the NFL. NFL teams can pull starters and be left with a team that can't compete in college. That doesn't really happen in the NBA. Even with younger guys getting most of the time, etc. in all sports the players are playing to win. Players don't ever try to tank games... they could be helping the team draft a guy that's going to replace them. It's owners/coaches, and they can't effectively do that like in the NFL. If you were to fold 4 teams (just using your number) making the worse teams much better than they are today, I think the assumption of tanking would go away with that alone. Plus the lottery works as intended in this regard. The question is why is it so unnecessarily secretive? Just show the actual lottery process to the world and problem solved.

Wwharton what u said about tanking actually makes a lot of sense. Its pretty hard for an NBA team to literally lose games on purpose because most players I would think are way to competitive to ever lose purposely. Had never thought about it like that. Only was thinking about the business side of it.

Re: What would you do as commisoner?

                          1. Eradicate the draft lottery. Draft picks are already pretty hit or miss as they are, no need to make it even tougher for teams to rebuild. If you're the worst, you get the the first pick...it only makes sense. Ties are broken by head to head matchups, then a coin-flip if the season series was a tie.

                          2. Either lower the salary cap or put a limit on max contracts (probably 2) that one franchise is allowed to use. I feel like we're about to enter a "big 3" era of basketball and it makes me sick. Teams like the Miami Heat shouldn't be allowed to exist. In order to increase parity, lower the amount of money teams can spend on stars, which in effect will evenly divvy up the stars so that teams without a "star" don't stay irrelevant for decades until they luck out and draft one (Timberwolves, Sacramento, Toronto, Milwaukee, etc.). When the resources for teams are scarce, stars will spread instead of teaming up together, thus making the league overall more competitive, unlike how it is today (6-7 "relevant" teams, everyone else irrelevant).

                          3. Make refs a lot more conservative with the whistle. I'm sick of seeing guys fly to the basket recklessly and get bailed out with a foul. If contact happens, let it happen. These are the best athletes in the world, so let them play. My personal rule would be "no slap, no foul". Let defenders counter reckless attackers by allowing them stand their ground, even if there's contact. It would improve the fluidity of the game, shorten games overall, and improve the mid-range game of most players because they won't get favors from the refs.

                          4. Bring back hand checking.

                          5. Fine for flops. Have a small committee of refs review every game. If a blatant flop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2h60uviwKC0) occurs, issue a public warning to said player. If another flop occurs, fine them 10 grand. Add another 5 grand onto that total for each subsequent flop. Players would get the message pretty quickly.

                          6. Allow players onto the court during incidents without automatically suspending them. It makes me sick when someone gets auto-tossed just because they stepped onto the court during a fight/incident. If they have good intentions and are actually breaking it up, like most guys do, don't suspend them. If they are being catalysts to the chaos, suspend them. It's not that hard of a judgement call to make. They let the benches clear in baseball, and only the instigators are suspended...why can't this happen in basketball? One player can make all the difference in basketball, why allow a team to lose a star over something so trivial?

                          7. Players in the last year of their contracts should not be tradeable. We're seeing this far too often (Dwight, Carmelo, etc.), guys in the last year of their contracts taking a franchise hostage by demanding that they be traded. One player shouldn't be able to influence where they go, the market should influence that. If a player signs a contract, they are legally obligated to honor it...no more of this nonsense. If they want get traded in the second to last year of their contract that's the franchises' decision, if they choose not to trade the player he still has to honor the contract and play the season after and become a free-agent. This would allow smaller teams a chance at signing the player because of change number 2, improve competitive balance, and give franchises a counter to the "I want to be traded now" guys. I'm usually a pretty pro-player type of guy, but this is one thing that REALLY irks me.

Number 7 has no shot at happening, but 1-6 really would make the league much better. Just my $.02.
