Players That Are Paid For Playing Defense

What do you guys think about teams paying players above average defense but has absolutely no offensive ability what so ever. In my in opinion, if you're not a scorer a decent floor general then you shouldn't be getting paid big contracts

Tell that to Dwight Howard, tell that to Ben Wallace who in his prime was the most dominant defensive big man in the game.

I don't get it though. I'm sure you can find plenty of long armed athletic defensive minded bigs in the D-league and get them for cheap money. It really can't be that hard to find an undrafted player with long arms, and athletic ability to sign as opposed to throwing 8mil at Omer Asik.

So you think you can plug in anyone that is athletic and defensive minded for 1/4 of the price and get the same result? Swap Ryan Hollins for Ben Wallace and he will produce the same?

I didnt know Omer Asik was known for his defense.

          .
Are you being sarcastic and implying that Omer Asik is indeed not a good defender. if that's the case that makes it even worse ! So he was given 8mil for above average rebounding? Crazy...

Well to my point, Ben Wallace was one of those defensive minded players that ended up being signed by a team.

I will throw 20 million at a Andrea Bargani before i throw 15 million to Tyson Chandler. I'm sorry..

And you will both lose more games and hamper your team's ability to sign other good players. Good luck with that GM interview.

You would pay 20mil for a 7 footer and cant grab more than 5 rebounds in 30+ minutes vs Chandler the defensive anchor. Got to remember, most of the things defensive minded players do, dont show up on the stat sheet.

Just random question Bargani or Kevin Garnett?

Wait, hold up. Only one of those guys has ever won a championship and one actually has an offensive game.

Also, there's a lot of guys in the league who play offense and are completely inept on the defensive end.

And here is the problem with most fans evaluations of players today. Defense isn't just something else players are burdened to. You can't just grab a guy off the street. A balance of both is ideal but if you'd pay a ton of money for someone who can't guard a paper bag bc they're THAT valuable on offense, the same is, and should be true for defense. And even if we step away from the centers (what's been being named here) we can also look at Rodman, Bowen, etc. Coincidentally, all the names we come up with have rings.

                    Time out.

So you really think long arms + athleticism is all there is to defense? At an elite level like the NBA?

It's heart. Taking pride in removing your man from the offensive equation.

It's intelligence. Knowing the team's schemes, how the PnR is being defended, rotations, tendencies, staying locked in for every possession.

I'd wager that defensive specialists are worth every penny.

I really don't need a good one on one defender. I'd rather just hire a coach who teaches good help defense, because truth be told, you can only do so much against the NBA's top scorers on a one on one coverage.

As a GM/Owner I'd pay a little more for guys that bring it on the defensive end. I'm not going to max money those guys of course, but I'll overpay a little bit for people who always bring their lunch pail and hardhat on that end of the court. Yeah, you can't stop the great scorers one on one, but I want them to have to earn their buckets all game long. You want to force them to take some possessions off because they know that they're not getting any thing easy.

Ronnie Brewer was not worth the $5 mil/yr the Bulls were paying him. Now the Knicks have him for the vet min.

Re: Players That Are Paid For Playing Defense

OP has no idea what it means to have great defenders. Length/Athleticism does not equate to defense. Instincts, heart, and determination separate the mediocre defenders from the tenacious defenders.

Just because you're not a scorer/floor general doesn't mean you shouldn't get "overpaid" because guess what, half of the NBA is filled with scorers and floor generals.

How many NBA players are actually huge factors on defense?

                              See: Andrew Bogut.

His defensive impact spread throughout the team. His guidance and defensive awareness helped him help his teammates be better on the defensive end.

Good defense goes a long way, and if it takes somewhat overpaying some great ball stoppers to instill better defensive chemistry amongst the team, then all the better.
