Eyes or Stats: How Do You Determine How Good A Player Is?

Just like the title says, how do YOU tell how good someone is?

Are you an Eye Test type of person where you just simply watch someone and then draw your own conclusion from there?

Or do you use Stats to come to your conclusion on how good some is or will be? Or do you use a little bit of both?(50-50, 60-40 Eyes or Stats).

And if you use stats, which specific stat(s)do you use to come to your conclusion about a particular player?

For me it's both, I'll watch a guy and think he's good or bad then i'll go look at all of his stats to see if it backs up what I thinks.

For what stats it's just a matter of the type of player he is I guess. Like for centers I'll look at rebound/blocks,etc.

LOL because I actually want this thread to NOT get locked.

We all know if Bumi was still around, he'd eventually post any and every stat saying Durant > Lebron and then everyone would start piling on and it'd go downhill from there.

On second thought, maybe I should've made this then just because the entertainment that would follow up in here would be worth it.

100% eyes, paying extra special attention to a player's performance without the ball. If a guy sleepwalks off the ball, then suddenly comes to life when he has the rock, that tells me alot.

Both because realistically you can't be objective with just one point of view.

                  I'd say about 80-20 eyes.

Although Hollinger is making a huge amount of progress in metrics, there is still almost no correlation between good stats and winners.

I use both, but not just eyes or numbers but also career accolades as well.. Also how much better a player can make the players around him, his impact.. Which I guess is using the "eyes" lol

Mostly eyes. Stats depend on so many things that's often are out of a players hands.

Number may not tell the whole story ,but they never lie either.

                        It's 95% eyes
Numbers lie. Did Anthony Davis score the most points in last years NCAA Championship? Everyone asks what was the score, no one asks who was the most dominate player on the court.
Example, and I know this an NBA thread but still. Who has the most receiving TDs in a season?
                        Randy Moss
Does that make him better than Jerry Rice? LMAO
Hard Work Beats Talent, When Talent Doesn't Work Hard
Jerry Rice is widely regarded as the best wide receiver ever to play the game, but he says he wasn't the most talented.

"I play when I want to play" -Randy Moss......what a total disgrace to football...he must feel great watching someone else lift that Lombardi Trophy in the air each January. Same can be said for Iverson. Ya, I said it, google iverson price.
I know, I know...Mark Price has a killer cross over and pump fake...hmm
                        PRACTICE
To bring this discussion, which I do enjoy (thx u OP), to the NBA side.
Jordan was cut from his High School team.
                        Did Jordan Practice?
Hmmm from getting cut from his HS team to becoming the greatest athlete ever in any sport....you can say that.
                        Then there's Iverson...
In this sense, eyes could be interpreted as a hard worker or a person with heart. Whereas, stats could be substituted for natural talent.
Put yourself in the coaches shoes...would you take someone working their tail off in practice to get ready for the season and giving it their all, or someone that just depends on their DNA?
VERY easy choice in my book.

It's gotta be both, I hate when people just bring up the stats, Some people probably just go on to NBA.com and look at the statistics, and make their arguments, without even seeing that said player play a game.

eyes to me stats doesn't tell the whole story type of system there in how there getting these stats etc for a player like Kobe with his assist if you look at when he was younger he averaged more assist its not because he hasn't gotten better its because now he doesn't have the shooters he used to(Fisher,Horry,Shaw,Devan George etc) and had Shaq to take pressure off the shooters recently he had Lazy Bynum and Pau Gasol with less shooters the years he won with them its because he had more shooters to space the floor(Brown,Odom,Sasha,Fisher) but in retrospect people will just look at stats and say well he can't do this or that so for me its eyes if someone can ball then they can ball if Dwight avg only 6 rebounds next years your still going tell me Dwight isn't a rebounding machine?
