Lol, and the Spurs are up 3 going into the 4th. i'd love to see Stern's reaction if they win without their top 6 players.

If teams aren't going to play their star players...fine. But they should pay for it, the same way I pay for those tickets with my hard earned money.

Somebody suggested maybe there was more money behind this than just you got a ticket and not the players if you know what I mean

Its definitely pr damage control though

            Wow...

            Just wow...

I mean, I could see a memo sent to the Spurs about it, but Sanctions? That's some grade a bull**** there.

If this game wasn't on national tv i wonder if Stern would have said anything? Go away Stern your retirement can't come fast enough.

What Stern can say when they come so close to winning the game?

                    Nothing imo.

Stern can begin to kiss the ground Popovich walks on. A bad decision by Gary Neal is the only reason that game didn't go into OT.

Re: San Antonio Spurs to Receive Sanctions for Resting Players

Ah well. Even the concerns of Heat fans not seeing the stars is now mitigated since A. it was a good game and B. if the stars played, the Heat probably would have lost. In any case, Stern...lol.

But Popovic is really a beast. He goes into the NBA champ's court without his top 6 players and almost pulls it out. unbelievable.

Re: San Antonio Spurs to Receive Sanctions for Resting Players

Using the term substansial sanctions is a bit much but I can see why he is speaking against this. True you have to let a coach run his team but he is trying to send a message more than anything. Stern should have handled this differently though.

We all have to realize the true reasons behind this though. If Pop would have sat those guys out yesterday against Orlando this wouldn't have happened. But to do it tonight yes it will cause some extra tension. Yes Stern is mad for the fans, those who bought tickets are pissed, and all of that but Stern is more pissed about the TV part of things. Trust TNT is not happy with their big Thurday night game missing three healthy all stars. In turn the advertisers who paid for those TV spots aren't happy less people are watching. This hits pockets far deeper than the fans. The TV shedule is put out around the same time as the NBA shedule so it's not like nobody just found out this was a primetime national TV game.

Pop could have easliy sent those guys straight to Miami after Washington and sat them out last night. Then they play tonight, Saturday against the Grizz, and then take an extra day off since they don't play again after that until Tuesday. If that would have happened Stern doesn't really have to say anything, the big money guys are still happy, and Pop gets his guys the extra rest.

He can sit his players out whenever he wants to. That's why he's paid to be the coach.

How about Stern not schedule them for a "prime time national TV game" against the defending champs at the tail end of a six game road trip?

I'm sure Pop knew he was going to sit them out before the season even started. He was probably thinking if Stern would ever schedule the Heat in the same way.

I don't blame Pop one bit.

He put a team that competed with the last season's champs. Nothing Stern can do about that.

You really don't see the strategy in this move? The Spurs had 6 game road trip with 4 games in 5 days against Toronto, Washington, Rest, Orlando and Miami. 3 of those 4 are about as close to guaranteed wins as it comes for SA every season. A game against Miami is always a battle but coming off that stretch of games against a Miami team that got a 5 day rest is beyond unfair. Knowing that they're going to have to play an even more physical game against division rivals Memphis means Manu, Parker, and Timmy are going to need all the rest they can get. This gives the Spurs the best chance to win a game of higher importance.
