Sitting the guys on the bench and having the available is better than telling them to go home and not even show up. That looks different in many eyes.

Also come on guys yes the NBA is a star driven league but so is the other two major pro sports in America. The NBA stands out more cause there is less guys on the court/field at a time and one guy can have a far bigger impact but let's not act like the offensive linemen or middle relievers are doing NFL and MLB commercials. You see the big names doing the TV spots for those leagues as well. In fact when they do commercials for a tv game for any league they say "insert star player here" and the "team name here" vs the "star player here" and the "team name here". That is putting the individual before the team. Think it is a fluke chance that the Colts where national tv games many times a year in years past and only once this year?? Do you think they don't put the Royals and Mariners of the world on tv just cause they don't like them?? Point is stars in all sports drive the market and always will. That's why teams like the A's got no love this year while the two teams that finished behind them got all the spotlight.
They don't put them on because they sucked either that year or the year before and aren't in large enough markets. Texas never got any games until they got good in the MLB even with A-Rod on the team. The Mariners had Felix Hernandez win the Cy Young the year before last and they weren't on national TV last year. The Cubs have no stars, but they get national games despite being garbage year after year. The Orioles and Pirates finally dug themselves out of the cellar and were able to get a few games on TV before the playoff push happened.

In fact, the Mariners' team commercials feature pretty much every player on the team. The player who appeared in the most this year was Dustin Ackley I believe. While stars are marketed, the team is way more heavily emphasized in other sports in comparison to the NBA.

Guys I'm not talking local tv spots like the last post about the mariners or ones like pack posted with Mangold. Any player for the most part can get some local love. I'm talking and stated in my post league commercials. Or even national major commercials. Sure there are exceptions to every rule but the point was you see the stars in the league commercials in all leagues not just the NBA.

Those horrible GEBCO commercials he used to.

I understood he was big dude but at least SOME rhythm. He looked like he never had any in that commercial.

But even in those Play60(League)commercials, you're not just seeing the "stars" in them. You're seeing other players from the team as well.

Mark Cuban agrees with the league's fining of the Spurs.

Follow the action on NBA scores, schedules, stats, news, teams, and players. Buy tickets or watch the games anywhere with NBA League Pass.

DALLAS — Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said commissioner David Stern was right to fine the San Antonio Spurs $250,000 — if not more — for sending their star players home prior to Thursday night’s nationally televised game on TNT against the defending champion Miami Heat.
Cuban said protecting the league’s network partners is a top priority because those contracts are “the money train, period, end of story, no questions asked.”
Oh, what's this I read? Another reason to not like Mark Cuban? Thought my list would stop at 1,000,000

If the Spurs had've been playing the Bobcats nobody would've cared but because the game was on TNT and against the Heat it becomes a big deal. The only reason Stern gives two ****s is because it affected ratings.
exactly. thats why it matters and thats why i agree with Stern on this one.

This stance represents some fantastic hypocrisy. Its fine against the Hornets and Bobcats, but dont do it against the Heat or I'll get upset!

                      Nonsense.

And lol at Cuban. If Cuban were the owner of the Spurs he'd be throwing a riot at the league. I cant stand that guy sometimes.

I think the game tonight basically proves why Pop is a coaching genius and anyone who dared to question his decision is a blithering idiot. San Antonio needed the Big 3 to get all the rest they could to even have a hope of beating the physically dominant Grizzlies who have had at least one day of rest in between every game since their last back to back on the 16th and 17th. Duncan needed to play 40 minutes and the Big 3 combined for 67 of the teams 99 points. Now does anyone think this game would have been anywhere near as close had they not been given that extra night at home? Because it sure looked like the journeymen that got slammed by the media left everything they had on the court against Miami. This is the game that should have been scheduled to be on National TV before the season started.

Yeah, shame on Pop. Stern's only going to make 2.004 billion dollars this year instead of 2.005. (or whatever the hell it is the NBA makes)

                          For shame, Greg!

Cuban still has an ax to grind against the Spurs.

Anyways, CIA Pop struck again in Memphis. I doubt the Spurs make a comeback like that against the Grizzlies if CIA Pop didn't sit the Big Three against Miami.

With moves like that Stern just shows that this is a league that doesn't give a crap about basketball. It's all about creating spoiled superstars to sell their images.

Funny because the Knicks got fined for less than that when they conducted illegal workouts with rookies.

It's all bout the money, integrity is not really important for Stern.
