Re: Hornets Changing their name to...
Those concepts do look really cool, but given the fact that the proposed color scheme is navy and red, I doubt those will come to fruition, but I have seen pretty much the same proposed logo in that color scheme and it looks pretty sick:
NO Pelicans.jpgMLB: Minnesota Twins
NFL: Philadelphia Eagles
NBA: Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves
European Football: Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion
NCAA: UNI Panthers, Iowa Hawkeyes

That was actually a point Deadspin made in their article about this. Names like Browns, Packers, Lakers, Yankees, Maple Leafs etc. wouldn't fly today because people would think they were too soft or dumb sounding. Pelicans makes me think of baseball more than basketball (for whatever reason), that's the biggest problem I have with it.
That logo is nice though if they went with that.
Oh and here's Deadspin's defense of the name. NSFW

Yeah, again, gotta give props on that logo. The artist did an awesome job.
I like the other color scheme better though I think. Although that red and gold is nice.
Has there been any word if this was a no doubt final decision, or is this another one of those ploys where they throw it out there to get a public reaction, and if it flops they decide against it last minute?Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

That's a really good point. I never thought of it like that but even back then calling a team the "pelicans" would get a chuckle out of people. The thing with Louisiana is that the things the state is known for don't translate too well to professional sports team or if it does it's already in use. Alligators, jazz music, French influence, food, crustaceans, black bear, pelicans...that's all i gotComment

That article is spot on and amazingly hilarious. These people whining about the name need to read the article and recognize.
You're probably picturing a big, clumsy poof of a bird stumbling around in the shallows, picking at weeds. Wrong. The pelican is fearsome. Take a raven, for example: it's omnivorous. It eats bugs, and seeds, and fruit, and carrion. Compared to the well-rounded citizen that is the raven, the pelican is the serial killer of birds. Not only is it a carnivore—it is a hypercarnivore. (That's a scientific term; look it up.) The pelican eats meat, and only meat. The pelican doesn't eat anything that didn't used to be alive. What's more—unlike an eagle or a falcon—the pelican almost never scavenges someone else's kill. It craves warm flesh, so it gets the job done itself. We've already established that a pelican's offense is unmatched. But they're selfless defenders as well. Here's a New York Times story from 1910 about a "marauding weasel" that found its way into the pigeon coop at the Central Park Zoo. Did the zoo's pelicans, Hildalgo Pete, Signor Gomez, and Sanchez Hoolihoo, run away? Did they stare helplessly as the weasel trespassed on their property and helped itself to a meal? They did not. They chased the weasel away from the pigeons, and cornering it against a mesh fence, beat it to death. "Even after the animal was dead the two pelicans…kept jabbing their bills at it."
Hidalgo Pete suffered a broken wing in the melee, but that's just what pelicans do. They give up their own bodies to protect their court. There's no way New Orleans will lose a home game.
Entire article was awesome.
