Oh and the 2nd rounders they gave up.

      Blazers 2015 & 2016 2nd rounder
As well as the rights to swap 2015 draft picks. I don't see the Kings finishing out of the bottom 12 this year either.

2015 swap is lottery protected, expires after 2015.

Can someone break it down in a short and sweet way?

Did Cleveland make a smart trade?

Id say so, we needed an upgrade at SF, and all we gave up was two 2nds and a possible 3rd 2nd for Deng.

I think it was a good trade on both sides. This won't make Cavs into contenders, but that isn't the point. The young guys need a taste of winning and some playoff experience. Hopefully Deng can get them there. They didn't give up any significant assets except for possibly the Kings 1st round, but it's top 12 protected this year and top 10 protected through 2017.

Pure speculation on my part, but I think Asik and Cavs will be linked somehow.

Cleveland traded Andrew Bynum (was never going to play a game)
The rights to swap 1st rounders in 2015.
A Kings 1st rounder which is heavily protected, could end up as a 1st or 2nd rounder
2 Blazers 2nd round picks in the next few years.

Chicago traded Luol Deng, an all star SF on an expiring contract.

If the Cavaliers manage to get Deng to sign a new contract, they are far and away the big winners here. If they don't, it's a lot to give up for a potential 2nd round exit in the playoffs.

Well, I think Cleveland is pretty clearly trying to get back to the playoffs regardless of the fact that they aren't about to be contenders or anything, so I think this is a "good" move in the sense that it helps them do that. But they're pretty much putting themselves in that NBA purgatory (obviously depending on what other moves they have up their sleeves this year).

Deng is a FA after this season if im not mistaken so he could be a half season rental as well

Luol Deng rejected a 3 year, $30 million extension with Bulls last week, league source tells Yahoo. Turned out to be prelude to trade. Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA)

                            Could be.

The Cavaliers, OTOH, have a ton of space and a dire need at SF. If he works, the Cavaliers will have an upper hand on getting Deng. Which they'd have little shot in the off-season.

Can only "rebuild" for so long before you need to start showing some sort of progress. Cavs just trying to win at this point so I don't blame them for making this deal if it means they'll be in the playoffs, which is what they want. They damn sure ain't winning a title this year but this is a move that gets them in the door which is what they need.

As long as the Cavs don't end up trading away a first round pick, it was a positive move. As long as the Cavs don't end up giving Deng more than 10 million a year it was a positive move.
