Gay and Harden have both been lackluster this year, but IMO neither of them are meant to be number one options, that's not a knock on them, just they can't be "The guy" and they're both being forced to try to

I've thought this about Gay his whole career., he sorta had a chance to do that in Memphis but he was almost limited to a spot up 3 point shooter for their post guys to kick to, which he definitely isn't a spot up shooter.. Then they had him add all that mass, he's was much better as a skinnier guy.. Little quicker off the dribble, and could squeeze into gaps in the defense like a young Ray Allen and RIP, or even poor man Durant... I don't think he'll ever be great in Toronto having to create his own looks all the time, would love to see him on a good team with a good PG..

Harden I feel can be a number one option, just one who's a little more passive.. Like a LeBron role.. He should have the pieces to be that now with Howard, Parsons, Lin there with him.. I haven't caught much of the Rockets this season so I can't really comment on what the problem is. Maybe they just need more time to click together, or a better offensive game plan / coach.

I agree with what you said about Harden, I'd say he's one of the best creators for scoring opportunities, whether that be setting up a teammate or scoring himself. I guess I just don't see him as being able to control a game like Kobe or LeBron or Durant, and he has a long way to go defensively, but like you said, it's a new team, so we'll see, my gf is a Harden fan so we've been watching the Rockets and Heat quite a bit this year

Yeah I don't think he'll ever be a Kobe, LeBron, Durant type of guy.. But with the right pieces around him I think he could be the focal point of a championship level team..

Hell if Dwight would learn a few post moves Harden wouldn't even have to worry about being a first option.

Harden definitely was a very good #1 option last year. He's not Rudy Gay, he's not just going to jack up 30+ jump shots as he knows he can just get to the line. I think it is more about him just being hurt (although he's still putting up points on around .450...should drop after this game a bit) I know he's hurt, and it is a good thing that he wasn't forcing it tonight.

I think they should rest him instead of having him play on sore ankles, because he's just not himself out there. Although he had a good all around game tonight, played good defense and looked to move the ball so I guess I'm not complaining. Just hope to see hold Harden slicing through the lane and what not soon...

geez... 11 for 37 from Rudy. That's Kobe Territory. Wolves and Clips was extremely entertaining. I hope the wolves can stay healthy. They're fun to watch.

Obviously some differences, but overall the system by Adelman-- ball movement, PnR, three points/spread the floor-- are in place and the skill sets are pretty similar.
That's exactly what I was saying last a few days ago.

Here's my problem with what people are saying about how guys like Gay and Harden aren't number 1 options...

The way ya'll are talking, there's only 6 number 1 options in the league. They're the number 1 option on their respective teams, so in theory, doesn't that make them a number 1 option?

I definitely see what you're saying with this.

I think when people criticize Gay and Harden, it's more in terms of "they'll never give their team a legit chance at making a deep run in the playoffs as a #1 option".

I think the desire to play hard-nosed defense plays a lot into this. I don't look at Paul George as a better offensive player than Harden, but his ability to play defense might make him a better suited #1 option going forward. Considering George's improving offensive arsenal. I personally don't have a say but I was just naming an example.

So of course guys like LaMarcus Aldridge, James Harden, John Wall are considered number one options on their teams, I wouldn't necessarily be confident that my team would be doing anything come playoff time. Like I said, I think individual defense and team defense plays into this whole topic.

Well in that case, Dirk Nowitzki was the #1 option for an NBA Championship team a few years ago as a 30+ year old. His defense is average at best.

Of course, Dirk had a legendary playoff run of averaging 25+ points, but I don't think anyone could call him leading the Mavs to an NBA title over Miami during the regular season.

Now I'm just getting off-topic lol
