Re: Pistons vs. Nets: Second Round Thread

I think the most important matchup of this series is The Wallaces vs. Kenyon Martin. K-Mart has expanded his offense around the paint and has developed into a decent scorer from the post and on isolation plays on the elbow and wing. Ben and Rasheed will have to neutralize K-Mart on the boards so he doesn't go hog wild getting so many offensive rebounds from long jumpers. K-Mart and the rest of the Nets frontcourt (Aaron Williams and Jason Collins in particular) killed the Pistons with that last year. And I have to admit that I'm concerned about the condition of Rasheed's foot. Because looking at the way he was limping around during that last game vs. the Bucks, he will have a lot of trouble guarding K-Mart if the foot doesn't get any better.

The Pistons must keep Jason Kidd from consistently getting in the lane or it'll be a long, difficult series. Needless to say that Kidd jumpstarts the offense, and most of the Nets half-court sets are predicated on Kidd's drives to the basket. Chauncey Billups has had trouble turning the ball over against the Nets when trying to drive to the basket. He and Richard Hamilton got stripped an awful lot last season doing so. If Billups is stroking it from midrange and from behind the arc, he can keep Kidd honest on D. Billups can then force Kidd to guard him instead of letting Kidd drift in the lane digging for steals.

Tayshaun Prince vs. Richard Jefferson is certainly a key matchup. The Nets have run a lot more isolation plays with Jefferson this year than last, so Prince has got to be prepared to defend Jefferson straight up and keep him from getting in the lane to often and getting any of the Pistons big men in foul trouble.

Another key matchup is Richard Hamilton vs. Kerry Kittles. Rip has to stay on Kittles and not let him get hot from 3-pt land. And on the other end, Rip will have to attack the basket to try and get Kittles in foul trouble. Kittles is the Nets only major threat from behind the arc. Plus Kittles gets a lot of his baskets on runouts whenever the Nets fast break is in full gear, so Rip has got to be aware of that and get back on D to prevent that from occuring too often.

And lastly, the Pistons have got to make baskets. The more baskets they make, the less the Nets can run to get their fast breaks going. The Pistons must move the basketball around and get everyone involved offensively, and generally make it tough on the Nets to defend them. They must limit the turnovers. And they have to seize every opportunity to get out on the break themselves for some easy buckets of their own.

    I can easily see this being a nip-and-tuck, grind-it-out, 6- or 7-game series.

Re: Pistons vs. Nets: Second Round Thread

So you're saying that the key matchups are:

          Billups v Kidd
          Hamilton v Kittles
          Prince v Jefferson
          Wallaces v Martin
          Wallaces v Collins & Williams

          Never thought about that....

          ...

On the radio this morning they were saying that THE thing to watch in this series is Larry Brown. Their feeling was that pRick Carlisle was fired because of the NJ series and this is the place where LB needs to shine. Show that the Pistons made the right move. Show that he is worth 5 large per. Not to mention that fact that he SHOULD be able to out coach Lawrence Frank.

I was impressed with Larry in Round 1. He has worked Tay and Memo like dogs this season and it is paying dividends now. When Tay said he wasn't supposed to be the Man...that he shouldn't tell the Vets to pass to him...Brown said...OK...if you're gonna act like a Rookie, I'm going to treat you like one. Started making him take the early bus to games. Made him carry the Starter's bags.

Then when Memo was getting sloppy at the beginning of this series, Brown worked him an extra hour in practice everyday working on "Playing Right". Look at his performance the last two games.

Besides the STUPID schedule they are playing...this is going to be a FUN series!!

Remember, this is Sheed's first game against the Nets as a member of the D. Pistons.
