    Re: 2014 Off-Season Thread

not gonna lie at 1st i was somewhat intrigued by the idea of landing melo to pair with kobe in LA; however i quickly realized early in this fa process that melo wasnt coming to LA.

so in retrospect i wish the lakers would have ditched the melo/lebron idea and used their free cap space to focused on building a team that could have possibly competed in the western conference now; more importantly a team that could be ready to go for the next future superstar player.

now im back to a place where i have no idea what the lakers brass is doing.

    -------------------

and while its too late now, i heard an interesting idea today of a plan of attack that the lakers could have explored going into this f.a. period.

the lakers could have attempted to traded kobe and pau to the knicks to pair with melo, fisher, and phil; for amare, barnani, c.anthony-erly, hardaway jr. and draft picks. i understand that kobe has the no-trade but if he were ever to wave it, i gotta believe this would be it.

Hate the fact that we lost Vince. We need to make a run at Mo Williams for sure now. We'll definitely need some bench scoring.

Also, part of me hopes Rockets match Parsons. I know you have to pay to play, but that's a lot of money. I think we could get cheaper pieces that will work well collectively, while also giving us depth.

Taj, Melo was the only chance at trying to be competitive next year. None of the other big FA would have considered us. All the young promising FAs were restricted so teams could've matched the offer. The only one I'm upset we didn't make a run at is Monroe just because I wouldn't think 15 mil a year would be bad for him. What Mitch basically did was tie up all our cap space in one year deals to try again next year(Nash, Lin & Hill's 2nd year is a team option). The pick we got from Houston will be a late first but that's better than no first.

All this summer did was let ownership know that they can't really get back to where they want for at least until Kobe is gone. I'm just waiting on them to announce Scott as our coach & not being as terrible as we were last year.

Apparently the Cavs are trying to acquire all of LeBron's former Heat teammates...

Linked have been Ray Allen, Mike Miller, James Jones, Birdman

I don't think they need to go that route but they definitely need LeBron's back up and a backup center.

Do the Cavs still have the MLE?

The Cleveland Cavaliers have reached out to Troy Daniels and James Jones on Friday.

The Cavaliers are searching for shooters to help spread the floor following the agreement with LeBron James.

Daniels became a key part of the Rockets' rotation in the playoffs.

If y'all can pry Mo from his tent outside Quicken Loans Arena, then y'all will have definitely earned him.

yeah i understand that the contracts are not really more than 1 mil deals; but i still dont see a vision in place. because 1 of the things that i think the lakers brass learned this yr, is that just because you have cap space to get a player you desire, there is no guarantees that that player will want to choose you over the next team.

gotta get out of that elitest mindset we seem stuck in.

and while i personally understand from a business perspective why kobe got the money (and unlike others, i do think that as long as he can still play somewhere close to his normal level that he is worth the money), but now that they have decided to give him the money; i dont understand not trying to field a competitive team on some level around him.

so what do you think about trading kobe to the knicks for amare and assets?

I don't like it from the standpoint of hopefully the young players (Randle. Clarkson) at least learn something from him. Even if it's just trying to mimic his work ethic that's a plus for us in the future. No matter what happened this summer, Kobe was going to be chucking up 20+ shots anyways. Good thing now we actually have some young players to look forward to seeing grow.

Besides we'll have 24 mil in cap space next year so more expiring deals wouldn't make much difference at this point.

                    Per Woj,

Utah has informed the Hornets that the four year, $63M offer for Hayward has been matched.

                    Nice try, guys.

Yeah, definitely overpaid, but you have to understand it from both team's perspectives. Charlotte adds Hayward and they add a 3rd scorer to compliment Jefferson and Walker and make them a threat in the East. Jazz have to bring him back because they have all of the cap space in the world and he's the only young guy that we've given consistent playing time to and is our most experienced guy.

At least we're not paying a 35-year-old $23M+ per year for 2 more years despite him playing 6 games last season.

That's all I can say lol.

No before the Gasol deal with the roster to stay as is they could offer Melo 73 mil over 4 years. Someone's going to have to take Boozers contract for Melo to basically get ideal numbers. That may not even be enough depending on how much Gasol will get, if he gets more than I expect you might have to get rid of taj Gibson also.
