Thompson seems like a better rebounder than he is because he gets so many offensive boards. I'd say they're pretty equal in rebounding.

      Harrison Barnes News

Much of the Warriors-related contract talk this season has been focused on Draymond Green and how much the free agent-to-be will get. But he isn’t the only starting forward who should get a new deal this offseason.

Harrison Barnes, who once again has shined in the postseason, is due for a contract extension this offseason. And the Warriors should be diligent about making sure he gets it.

According to multiple sources, Barnes indeed wants an extension and the Warriors want to give him one. The only question is how much will he get.

The Warriors have bragged about their 2013 draft bounty, in which they landed Barnes (No. 7), Festus Ezeli (No. 30) and Green (No. 35). And rightfully so. Those selections are a major reason they enter Game 2 on Sunday as heavy favorites to win the 2015 NBA title.

So it makes sense to keep the home grown talent. Yes, that means big man Ezeli should be extended as well. But that should be easy because his salary will be affordable.

But the decision on Barnes should come first. And it’s really not much of a decision at all. He wants to be here and he’s proven his value, and he won’t command a ridiculous salary.

That’s what Chicago’s Jimmy Butler did, rejecting the Bulls’ four year, $40 million offer in search of a max deal. Unlike San Antonio’s Kawhi Leonard, who also didn’t get the extension he was in due, Barnes isn’t in line for a max extension from the Warriors. His credentials detail he will fall below the $15 million or so Thompson received and Green will command. Thompson made All-NBA and Green made first team All-Defense.

Is Barnes worth $10 million? No question. Even if the price gets up to $12 million, it’s a reasonable buy. And the Warriors can afford it.

The Warriors are set up to become regulars in the postseason. They have the core to make an annual championship push. Barnes has proven to be pivotal in the postseason. If he’s not scoring 24 points on Houston in a series-clincher, he’s playing great defense in a must-win road game at Memphis.

Barnes is a crucial joint that allows the Warriors to bend and flex and maintain versatility. And if his game improves, he could be even more valuable.

Plus, the Warriors don’t have a good reason not to pay Barnes. His new deal wouldn’t kick in until 2016-17.

That’s the year David Lee’s $15 million-plus comes off the books. Plus commissioner Adam Silver said in his news conference Thursday the salary cap that year is expected to be around $90 million and the luxury tax at about $108 million.

So the Warriors will still have room even though Klay Thompson and Draymond Green should have big contracts on the books then. Thompson signed a five-year, $70 million contract extension last summer and Green is expected to get around $15 million this coming offseason.

Assuming those two will take up about $32 million — plus another $40 million going to Stephen Curry, Andrew Bogut, Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston — the Warriors will have about $72 million committed.

That leaves the Warriors with $28 million in wiggle room before paying the luxury tax. They’ve got plenty room to afford Barnes plus the four draft picks they will have between now and then, plus roster fillers.

But what the run at Kevin Durant the Warriors are gearing up to make?

Barnes will still be tradeable. He is still an asset — especially at the price in a market where many teams will have money to spend under the increased cap. He’ll be an attractive piece for Oklahoma City in the Warriors’ pursuit of Durant.

Plus, Bogut and Iguodala will be on expiring contracts. And Livingston’s deal isn’t guaranteed that year, which means even more flexibility.

Barnes is happy here, even after his name was bandied about in trade rumors and his role changed his first couple years. Even after the media and fans criticized him for inconsistency.

If the Warriors get three more wins to clinch a title, the two sides can negotiate with love in the air. The high of a championship is a more favorable climate than letting Barnes become a restricted free agent next offseason.

If the Warriors and Barnes don’t reach an agreement, he will be free to seek a contract elsewhere. The Warriors would have the right to match but they’d risk a team overpaying.

How much would the Charlotte Bobcats offer to get the former Chapel Hill star back to North Carolina? What would a guy like Barnes be worth to the Memphis Grizzlies, who could use a player to bolster their offense without killing their defense? How much would the Los Angeles Clippers love to upgrade their starting lineup and take from the pantry of their rivals?

Portland, New Orleans, Miami and Chicago are all playoff teams who will have cap space and holes in their roster Barnes could fill. Even though they’d have the right to match, the Warriors would be smart to avoid letting Barnes hit the market where the price can skyrocket.

Danny Ferry likely gone as Hawks GM:

There has been a belief within the Hawks’ organization for several months that the team’s general manager is not going to be brought back. The thinking is that coach Mike Budenholzer (expected to get a new contract with a raise and more autonomy) and assistant general manager Wes Wilcox likely will be at the top of the basketball operations department, at least for the next year.
At this point, there are three scenarios for Ferry, but only two plausible ones:
            • Ferry resigns: This is the favorite. It could happen any day. The Hawks likely would agree to pay off the balance of Ferry’s contract and it would allow him to make an exit statement along the lines of, “I’m proud of the work I did here but I feel it’s the best for all parties to move on.”
            • Ferry is fired: It doesn’t serve anybody to have this thing end ugly, least of all Ferry, who wants to get another job (and will). But he has been resistant to leaving, loves living in Atlanta and it may come to this.
            • Ferry is kept: Think “PowerBall” odds.

Lol you don't say? This is the same ******* that wouldn't budge from $45 million/6 year contract when Joe Johnson wanted $50 million. Yeah that extra $800K per year really would have hurt his pockets, ****ing cheap *******. Man you got me started now, gonna have to fire up 2K and play with the 05 team.
