He must really want to stay in CLE because not signing the QO limited his ability to negotiate both this season and elsewhere next season (if that's his end game). Even if he sits out the season, he would still be a RFA next offseason. I applaud CLE sticking to their guns up to this point and they may come out on top (lower contract) like they did when Varejao held out in '07. There is precedent here that CLE may be in this for the long haul.

So what's Thompson getting paid now?

Derozan for Thompson. Who says no?

After signing Mo, and getting back Smith and Shump I'm not sure why Cleveland would want to do that trade.

That's my thought as well. He is now considered a holdout, so its going o be interesting to see what happens now. Good for the Cavs sticking to their guns, but even though he is a liability somewhat offensively he is a big part of that team and the success they had in the playoffs, so I am a little surprised the Cavs haven't got something worked out yet. Although it sounds like he is asking for a max deal, or close to it, which seems crazy considering his lack of offensive ability.

He completely screwed himself not taking the qualifying offer. Nothing new though really. He already completely screwed himself not taking 80 over 5 which is WAY more than he's worth as a decent rebound and effort guy coming off the bench with almost no offensive capability whatsoever.

Reggie Jackson is closer to an 80mil player than Tristan Thompson is and Reggie Jackson isn't worth anywhere near 80mil.

Someone whispered in to his ear after the Finals that he was a superstar or something. One six game series that you didn't even win after a pretty damn average and mediocre season doesn't (or shouldn't) award a max contract.

Thompson is a fool. Just sign a contract to the contender you were already a part of. You're playing with the best freakin player in the world.

I don't blame him for trying to maximize his earnings. That's the one thing I'll never blame a player for doing.

Agreed. Get yours. If you're delusional, it doesn't matter if someone is going to pay.

Not sure if someone will but Thompson has to be careful if he's trying to earn money. If I'm Cleveland I know I have LeBron James with a good supporting cast plus two All stars. In the East, that's probably enough to get back to the Finals. If Tristan wants to chill at home not collecting a check, that's all good.

If this were a truly integral part of the team then you see a panic sign. And while Thompson is important to the team, is he so important to take away enough wins to remove you from title contention? Probably not.

That of course makes him a non max guy but no young player with max potential is ever going to believe they can't get max money.

Heck, JR Smith opted out of easy money to have to re-sign for essentially a free year because he couldn't correctly understand his value.

                          Lmao..Lebron roasting teams in practice:

"I heard there were only two teams that could actually pay him (Tristan Thompson)...Portland and Philly? I like our chances."

The owners make plenty of money to pay Tristan max. I'm upset because I'm a Cavs fan and would like for him to play for the QO at least then leave. But as a guy knowing the owners just signed a BILLION dollar TV deal plus whatever other endorsement offers they have on top of that, I'm not mad at all.

Sure he only avgs 9 & 9 but he was the best bench big in the NBA. He kept us in multiple games in the Finals with rebounding and he is still 1 of the youngest guys on the team. I could see him being a 15-15 guy honestly if he keeps working on his game/working with Duncan. He's still pretty unorthodox offensively but bigs usually take time.

In the paraphrased words of Larry Bird, get your money while you're young. No reason to accept less money now when you're older you're gonna be chasing rings and accepting less money then. Get paid now.

Although Rich Paul is using Lebron's leverage in pretty much all his deals, there's no way you can really be upset with these guys considering how much revenue they bring teams when they win. Thompson misses a few rebounds maybe the Cavs don't make the finals? Who knows...But I do think his overall worth is max. Not max like if he's not on the team we won't compete, but max like he does bring his all when he comes to play. Hell hem Mozgov and Lebron were the only guys on the Cavs actually capable of playing against GS. Mozgov was just too big lol. He played great against the Bulls etc. The deal will get done tho.

The owners can have all the money they want there's no reason to be paying extra millions in luxury tax to sign up a guy who, and you all know I love TT, is just energy.

Lol. Yeah he's certainly more than an energy guy tho. He plays top defense and grabs a crazy amount of rebounds. Mostly offensive.

He's not anywhere near guys like Rodman and Wallace but I think those guys would be max guys in todays NBA. Would you say they are just energy guys? Bottom line luxury tax or not they can afford it. He knows his worth. Or what he thinks he's worth. What if he actually develops a capable offensive game but signed a contract for less than what he starts producing?

He's max in the fact that he's one 1 of the better players from his draft class. He wouldn't be getting K Love max money in the coming seasons, but now he should the max for the amount of years he's played. I mean Deandre Jordan is just an energy guy too.

I don't disagree with you saying they shouldn't pay luxury tax just because, but I think it's disrespectful to say the owners can have all the money they want and not pay guys. It's not about luxury tax either IMO. They're not paying him because they don't think he's worth that much. If luxury tax wasn't in place, I still don't think they would be offering Tristan the max. That's what I think this stalemate is really about.
