    Re: 2015 Summer League Thread

Can someone explain to me why the Lakers are playing so much zone defense? They played a lot in the last game I watched too. Do they really have no confidence in their summer league guys to match up man to man? Or is Byron Scott expecting to play a lot of zone during the season?

I agree with pack, lots of players have bad summer leagues and do fine in reg season. As far as the lakers, it was one sl game, our whole future aint ridin on it.

Aside from the fact that it's one game, wasn't there a player in recent years that struggled with TOs during SL but was fine come regular season? I think it was Napier. Could be wrong though but still SL means jack.

This is what happens when you have a bunch of fans who have never gave a damn about SL before and now pay attention to it and are expecting them to play like the vet squad. SL has a vast number of TRASH games played, but it's interesting since there is no other bball and you want to see the rookies. This is mainly for fringe guys and dudes looking for overseas contracts. They are the ones who will play the best and also be the ones chucking with tunnel vision since they are playing for their careers (aka Dwight Buycks).

They are having glorified practices on TV and are trying to teach them things they'll use when they are on the real team (certain sets, communication on D, end of game situations, etc.). Most of these dudes haven't even trained professionally yet or had a training camp, fans gotta chill lol.

P.S.- The Lakers weren't just running sets from the princeton tonight, they probably tried to throw in some new sets during the off day.

Couldn't catch the game tonight, but judging on the reactions I can tell we sucked it up.

By no means am I expecting the trio of Clarkson, Russ & Randle to blossom overnight especially since Russ & Randle our both rooks, well if you don't count them couple of minutes Randle played before being out the whole year.

I expect some growing pains especially from Russ if he's going to be playing the point. I love that he looks to make plays passing but he's going to have to tone it down a bit with the turnovers, all in all its just one game, one summer league game it won't mean much going forward.

Now just one more year of both Byron and Bryant an I'll be good.

Russell has maybe 2 turnovers a game that are those "rookie mistakes" like trying to dribble through too much traffic an getting trapped on the sideline and trying to force a pass out of the double, but the rest are him and teammates not being on the same page. On the 1st possession tonight he passed it to Randle a bit low and he lost it, there was one on a P&R with Black where Black wasn't looking for the ball, there was one where Anthony Brown stepped out when receiving the ball on the sideline. That's 5 right there. All in all you can see the talent is there. He has shown he has the ability to create the space he needs to get his shot off it just isn't falling for him.

Tonight was just one of those nights where nothing went which just made everything seem worse. As much as people are focusing on the bad, they came back several times throughout and no one is talking about how horrible the Knicks looked in stretches too lol. But, it's SL.

Last night was just a normal summer league game between 2 teams who won a combined 38 games last year. You could see Russell get more frustrated and confused as the game went on. Unfortunately he can't do anything about terrible coaching(Yes, Mad Dog the best thing to do for your struggling #2 pick is sit him the majority of the 4th for a couple of players who may or not be on the team in 3 months).

Good news is they keep showing Byron and his talent sitting court side.

Meaningless SL game but yeah, LAL looked so lost on offense. Basically a pickup game out there by the looks of it. Russell just did a dance and a stepback three or drove and turned it over.

On the other side, it'd be nice if our PGs at least tried to get Taps involved on offense, granted he's been extremely unselfish in two games. Still, taking the fewest shots of all our starters shouldn't happen. At least he's not forcing it. He's playing far more inside than I expected, think he's only take two 3PA in two games and he was fouled on one.

He's looked better than I expected, I didn't think he'd be able to contribute at all this year but he might be able to play 12-18 minutes a night for us. Maybe, maybe not. He needs to up his conditioning as much as his strength.

I'm high on him, and even I've been surprised by his willingness to attack closeouts and put the ball on the floor. He had a couple nice passes in his debut too. Haven't seen much of last night's game yet though; have it on DVR.

He's also played less minutes than all of the starters which is why he's taken less shots. That being said, I've been impressed with the frequency he's gotten to the line in both games. He's got 7 FTA in each game so far.
