    re: 2016 NBA Offseason Thread

    Per ProBasketballTalk

As the coaching carousel heats up, one recently displaced coach might be sliding into another’s place. The Pacers fired Frank Vogel on Thursday, and he’s already drawing interest from Memphis, hours after the Grizzlies’ unexpected dismissal of Dave Joerger Saturday morning.

    From The Vertical‘s Adrian Wojnarowski:

As it became clearer that Joerger wanted a more lucrative contract and a fresh start elsewhere, Grizzlies management cut ties with him. Memphis is starting its search immediately, and former Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel is expected to get considerable attention in the early stages of the process, sources said.

NBA.com’s David Aldridge also reported Memphis’ interest in Vogel, and his ties to GM Chris Wallace, but cautions that the Knicks are better positioned to land him if they so choose to:

Vogel definitely on Grizz radar, but Memphis knows his NY ties & if Knicks are serious about him, Grizz can’t/won’t get into bidding war.

    — David Aldridge (@daldridgetnt) May 7, 2016

Vogel also has ties to Grizz GM Chris Wallace; Vogel’s first NBA job was in video room for Rick Pitino in Boston while Wallace was GM there.

    — David Aldridge (@daldridgetnt) May 7, 2016

Vogel would be a pretty seamless replacement for Joerger, from a basketball standpoint. They’re both defensive-minded workers, and by all accounts, Memphis’ firing of Joerger was for personality reasons, not stylistic ones. But Vogel would also command a high price tag given his success in Indiana, and it could be cheaper for the small-market Grizzlies to go for a rising assistant.

It doesn’t seem that the Grizzlies are close to finding a replacement for Joerger. But there’s a natural fit with Vogel, and it’s something to keep an eye on.

These articles crack me up man. They give all these solid reasons why such and such might happen, and all of them at the end are like "it doesn't seem like this is going to happen but look how it could"..

In other words, they speculate like we do.

Unless you're looking for something specific...

With all these coaching changes i'm glad that the Raptors have remained patient and buy into trying to create a culture with Dwane Casey. (Who is about to get a 3 year extension)

Let's just say it's a good thing they won Game 7 because if he loses that....

They still need to get to the ECF... 56 wins and clinched the 2nd seed by like 8 games, anything less than that would be a failure. Unless he gets some sort of boost for finally getting them out of the 1st round, but I wouldn't really understand that especially since it took 3 tries.

He would've returned regardless though I think the pressure from the fans and media would mean a very short leash.

Getting out of the 1st round was the key thing but in the back of the minds of most fans it's been ECF or bust though management probably doesn't think that way.

They need to. It's just that the owner wasn't budging on Morey even after it was reported by a legit rockets insider he was on the hot seat at the beginning of the season.

What type of team are they?

That's the one thing I could never pinpoint about them.

Well the GM has his philosophy that he wants them to play by based on how he looks at numbers.

3's and layups, with an emphasis on avoiding long mid range shots, because he says they are inefficient.

It's definitely not big man friendly though

I also think part of the Rockets' problem is the friction between players and the authority figure (coach) as we've seen that flare up from time to time. I know this is a league wide thing but i've seen stories that put James Harden in a very unfavorable light. That being said, we're seeing in the playoffs that being big man friendly CAN help teams. I also have to laugh at the notion that 3s are more efficient than long mid range shots because if anything when a team is cold the 3 point shot is worthless.

Anywho, I feel that Houston needs a bit of a house cleaning.

3 is 50% more than 2. League average from 16 ft to 3 pt range is 39%. League average from 3 is 35%. So for a 4% drop in shooting percentage you're getting a 50% increase in scoring output. That's not analytics, that's 2nd grade math.

Math was never my strong suit
