Fans do get on players here in Detroit and probably close to 80% of how bad fans in New York get on players but they are more relaxed now that Detroit has another Championship. I did hear some phone calls on the post-game show tonight about how bad a judge of talent Dumars is because of the Darko pick though. Those calls usually happen after every loss. I guess there's idiot fans everywhere.Last edited by OneBadMutha; 10-29-2004, 11:08 PM.Comment

Re: The Future looks DARKO...
Now on to the Darko stuff, you guys need to stop reading too much into what happens out on the courts right now. Right now Darko plays like a scared bi#ch but it's more a result of being afraid of screwing up and embarrasing himself than it is being scared of other players. Ben and Sheed believe he's going to be great. LB and Joe Dumars believe he's going to be great. Every announcer or media person that has watched him work out has been impressed. Like the announcers on ESPN said tonight, he looked great when they saw him practicing but he gets stage-fright and doesn't look like the same player on the court during games. Until Darko gets comfortable on the court, there will be no way for fans to get any ideas about his talent.
I think the only mistake Dumars made was thinking he'd be ready 3 years from when he was drafted. I can't see Darko contributing until at least his 4th year and probably not doing anything really worthwhile until his 5th year. He's just not going to develop fast because the Pistons have too much depth in their front court and their 3 best big men are all only 30. He just came to the wrong team if playing time is what he was looking for anytime soon.Comment

Looking at the Piston's roster right now, its hard to doubt Joey D's decision-making. If Joey D. honestly believes the kid will flourish, then he deserves the benefit of the doubt.
However, you have to factor in the uncertainty of the future CBA. I wonder how long the Pistons can hold this team together. Another title isn't far fetched, and eventually these guys are going to start to get max-pay offers. With so many effective pieces, the 'Stones are bound to lose a few here and there. By the time Darko is "ready", Detroit is going to have to pony up to keep him also, with little hopes of a hometown deal, considering his frustration with this slow process they're dragging him through.
Again, you can't argue with this franchises success...but Darko's future will be interseting to watch.Hank's Custom Collectibles 3D printer/painter extraordinaireComment

If the CBA doesn't change it's rules, I see the Pistons being in solid shape going into the future. Right now they don't have any bad contracts for the long term. They've got a lot of money coming off the cap from role players after this season. Tayshaun Prince and Ben Wallace are the only two players from Detroit's core who's contracts will come up within 2 years. Tay is protected and Detroit plans on having Ben's extension done a year before his contract is up (which is why they dumped Corliss).
Right now Detroit has Sheed, Hamilton, Billups, and McDyess locked up to very reasonable long term deals. Ben Wallace and Tay's contract come up in 2 years but Dumars has already been planning to get those done ahead of time. Darko and Delfino will be under contract for at least 3 years before they are restricted free agents meaning that Detroit will be able to match any offers for those guys if they feel they are worthy of them.
Davidson paid the luxury tax last year and the pay roll will go down considerably next year with contracts coming off the books. Even after re-signing Ben and Tay in 2 years, they'll still be in great shape in regards to the luxury tax unless they add another big contract between now and then.
As good a job as Dumars has done aquiring talent, he's done just as good a job managing the salary cap.Comment
