    Re: WNBA!

Can't say I'm super invested in the WNBA, but I do catch a Storm game every once in awhile. For whatever reason, I prefer watching women's NCAA basketball, despite knowing that the talent gap can cause some really bad games. Last year's run by UW's women's team through the tourney was some of the most fun I've had watching basketball.

I know the Storm clinched a playoff spot last night. I also have a friend from college who covers them, so I can kind of keep up a little bit. I know they've been pretty hot as of late.

For the record, Swoops was as close to Jordan as possible for woman's hoops. Incredible story too of her struggles of dealing with sexuality at a time it was much less acceptable and going through pregnancy at a time the woman's game was trying to prove legitimacy. She's a pioneer (obviously not a rebuttal to your post but I felt some actual talk about her career needed to be added, lol).

Actually back in the day, I was a big Swoopes fan even if I didnt agree with how she lived here life, it dont take anything away from how great a player she was, she was the MJ of that time early in the startup of the WNBA.

Also no I dont just watch because of how attractive some of them are. I was just pointing out, that Swoopes used to be cute, but not now. Heck my favorite player to ever play ****** basketball and 1 of the greatest female players ever is Tamika Catchings, an I dont think she would would be on many list of sexy female athletes.

This is true. Probably not even top 5 at this point... but the woman's game has evolved alot.

Yeah the ****** game has evolved since those early years, with their being more competition than there was when Swoopes and Cynthia Cooper were playing those 1st few seasons an dominating everyone they played.

Still I dont think you can take away from the talent those early players had. Swoopes is still ranked up there as a all time great, top 5 probably would be pushing it though, Id say she still a top 10 WNBA player.

Sadly possibly the best ****** basketball player ever never got to play in the WNBA, with that being Cheryl Miller, its too bad by the time she the WNBA formed her time had past. Although Catchings, Taurasi, and Maya Moore are just a few that I would rank right up there as best to ever play their sport.

Yeah, I was going to say it's not fair to say the best "WNBA" player because there were some great players before the WNBA was even a thing. Cheryl Miller was the first to come to mind. Dawn Staley (still coaching on one of those WNBA teams) is another.

It was hard to gain respect for the game because the talent in college was clogged on a handful of teams. Many would say it still is but (as I'm sure you know) it was MUCH worse. Then the only time you'd see the cream of the crop competing was in the Olympics, and they were going against other bad players, so it was a tough watch for casual fans. But I think I got behind the women's game because it didn't have the physicality and athleticism of the men, so it forced more ball movement, smart shots, etc. I've also watched A TON of lower level high school ball, which probably made it easier for me to look past the bad plays and enjoy the style as a whole.

Funny thing is, I haven't really gotten behind the WNBA. I still like NCAAW, follow Maryland's Lady Terps pretty closely, watch the big match ups and follow the tournament. But for some reason, I'm too wrapped up in other sports to really follow the pro game.

If it werent for the Indiana Fever Id probably wouldnt have gotten as into the WNBA like I have. I use to only really watch the Purdue Girls, and Pat Summit's Lady Vols. Purdue had Jennifer Jacoby who went to a rival school of mine, and way back in the day she played on the guys Boy Club teams, so I actually played against her when we were kids, so that was another reason to follow them. Then Stephanie White came along, so Purdue was pretty good back in this years.
Obviously Pat Summit says enough about why I followed the Lady Vols, only woman who I htink could have been successful coaching any mens team, she was that good.

Just the way the woman play in the WNBA, with ball movement and playing as a team is ultimately what made me a fan of their game. They play more as a team than a lot of the NBA teams do, so personally I prefer to watch teams that play the right way and dont play selfish basketball, and a few of the WNBA teams are more exciting to watch than some of the NBA teams.

Once this season is over and Tamika Catchings retires and Stephanie White leaves to go to Vanderbilt, my interest might wane some in watching the WNBA, unless the Fever continue to be good, but losing Catch, will be a huge loss, along with losing Steph, so I look for that record of consective playoff appearances to end unfortunately. Im sure once the playoffs start next yr even if the Fever struggle I will probably still watch, but not sure it will be the same.

One thing though. That shot counted. I only saw one replay. But it looked like it didn't count. Can anyone confirm for me?

Was flipping channels and on NBA TV Lisa Leslie was saying the losing coach was coming across as a "whiner."

On ESPN, they showed the coach complaining about the officiating, demanding they get the basic things right like shot clock violations. She also said a memo from the league admitting the mistake is not good enough.

So the winning shot for the championship should not have counted at all?

So do I. What good is an apology the next day from the officials saying they got a call wrong? That kills me when it happens in sports. Why even play a damn game if the refs admit they blew a critical call, yet it stands as a win still for the other team? They're not going to go back and change it, so what's the point?

She's a whiner because she expects the game to be called correctly, and wants these pro wrestling referees held accountable? Yeah..okay.
