I guess I'd just say the eye test, watching him he just doesn't do a good job of keeping his man in front of him, he's often lazy and comes off as not caring, I dunno. I just don't watch him and come away thinking here's a good defender at all. It won't be a big thing though, especially this year. I'll give him the Harden pass because they want him to do everything out there.

I don't know enough about those advanced stats to dispute them one way or another, I'd have to look more into them, but I wonder if it's like baseball where defensive metrics are just garbage. It's just hard for me to believe that you can measure overall defensive impact of an individual player through numbers, and I'd imagine they'd be skewed based on who you play with. Like I think you mentioned to Solis that Steph had the most Defensive Win shares, he's not a terrible defender, he's just not the best, and him being given that ranking leads me to believe that stat has a hard time isolating his contributions vs him being in the best defense in the league. I'll have to figure out what each stat means and make a determination on what they're trying to say.

I guess it brings up another thing for me to think about, which is how much value team defense has over shutting down an individual, IE is it more valuable to have a guard who gets out and wreaks havoc in the passing lanes interrupting everything or someone who shuts his opponent down for 4 quarters 1 on 1? I guess that would depend on team and position.

Of course, just one game, but it was awesome.
Was my boy Kemba his usual self? I know he and Lin played well together during last season so who are y'all having replace his spot this year?

At one point in the 3rd or 4th quarter Pel's were only hitting 8% of their 3's versus Denver's 62%. Obviously, Denver missed a bunch of 3's late because they only ended up at 33%, but they were definitely on fire in the 1st half.

Buddy seemed a little nervous, he and Solomon Hill need to play much better than they did last night if the Pel's want to win some games this year. If the Pel's had a SF like Gallo or Barton on this team they would surprise some teams. Hopefully, Tyreke and Holiday can get back before it's too late.

Oh, and lastly I love Lance. He's soooo much fun to watch with the ball. AD, Lance, Frazier and Moore were the only bright spots last night. Everyone else was pretty bad.

Yeah Kemba was Kemba. He didn't really try to force the offense because the Bucks just weren't very good, and he let MKG and Marvin eat. Our backup this year to replace Lin is Ramon Sessions.

Yeah I never had an issue with Ramon when he played for us a few years ago.

To me his biggest problem is how much he gambles. And often times when he leaves his man he gets caught watching the play rather than getting back to him. So then you get instances where maybe he runs down to try and poke the ball away from a guy inside, and if he doesn't get the steal he's just awkwardly standing around because he doesn't consistently recover well.

Most defensive metrics are indeed fairly garbage because you can't really show a stat on how well someone defends their man one on one, how well they move their feet. Team defense definitely boost all of those individual defensive numbers, but guys like Steph, CP3, have top 5 defensive rated teams in the league, compared to OKC who's around the middle of the pack, yet Russ still compares to them in those metrics.

Russ definitely isn't what I would consider an elite defender, but he's as solid as most above average defensive guards. That combined with his defensive rebounding, forced turnovers, I just give him a slight added bonus. But I think what I said originally was that he's a top 5 defensive point guard, I don't think that's a stretch. Most of your better guard defenders are SGs who can use their length. Chris Paul for PG, Rubio is pretty good, I've got Russ with guys like Lowry and Wall, maybe a notch ahead of Steph.

Ulis is scrappy tho, hated on because he's small... but he held his own in college.

Celtics @ Bulls later on tonight. I have tickets for when Chicago comes here on the 2nd next month. Should be a fun game between two possible playoff teams.
