I guess I'd just say the eye test, watching him he just doesn't do a good job of keeping his man in front of him, he's often lazy and comes off as not caring, I dunno. I just don't watch him and come away thinking here's a good defender at all. It won't be a big thing though, especially this year. I'll give him the Harden pass because they want him to do everything out there.
I don't know enough about those advanced stats to dispute them one way or another, I'd have to look more into them, but I wonder if it's like baseball where defensive metrics are just garbage. It's just hard for me to believe that you can measure overall defensive impact of an individual player through numbers, and I'd imagine they'd be skewed based on who you play with. Like I think you mentioned to Solis that Steph had the most Defensive Win shares, he's not a terrible defender, he's just not the best, and him being given that ranking leads me to believe that stat has a hard time isolating his contributions vs him being in the best defense in the league. I'll have to figure out what each stat means and make a determination on what they're trying to say.
I guess it brings up another thing for me to think about, which is how much value team defense has over shutting down an individual, IE is it more valuable to have a guard who gets out and wreaks havoc in the passing lanes interrupting everything or someone who shuts his opponent down for 4 quarters 1 on 1? I guess that would depend on team and position.
