Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
They were over the cap and would have had to shed salary to sign CP3 outright because you need "cap space" to sign a FA. By trading for him they obtained his bird right's which means you don't need cap space (you just have to send matching salary out) to sign him and you can extend him over the cap (so long as your owner doesn't mind paying the tax).
EDIT: Didn't read your question all the way through. Yeah, not sure how this frees up space to sign a FA. They'd have to shed quite a bit of salary.
The other part was just me making the mistake of arguing with some twidiot who I should've just ignored when I was 99% sure he was wrong, but I wanted to ask just in case I was missing something.Comment

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
Off the top of my head, the Nets and 76ers would start him. Admittedly, the Nets have both Russell and Lin and may roll them both out in the backcourt at once, then stagger their minutes to let one run the offense while the other rests.
Philly could definitely use Reddick's shooting touch, though -- a lineup of Fultz, Reddick, Simmons, Holmes, and Embiid would be fine. 76ers would get closer to the playoffs than they have in years (assuming everyone stays healthy).
Assuming Reddick doesn't want to play on teams way out of contention, I don't see anywhere else. Maybe the T'Wolves (but his lack of defense is a non-starter for Thibs), maybe the Jazz (assuming they lose Hayward and Hill in free agency), but I don't see a title contender giving him a starting role.Comment

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
So apparently Dolan is eying Masai Ujiri as Phil's replacement. This article should cool off any anticipation of that happening. A small but key part of that article is a quote from an MLSE executive to "don't even waste your time on this.". MLSE has made it known in the past that Masai is their man and have renegotiated his deal previously when his name was mentioned for other jobs.
Never say never, but I doubt Ujiri bolts for NY and if he does well....Welcome Kristaps Porzingis and a 1st round pick to Toronto"You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
The feeling is that Lowry's market is 3 years/85 mil but all it takes is for one crazy team to go into the 4 year/100+ mil area to jack up his value. At this stage i'm ambivalent about Lowry coming back. I'd love it but if the Raps are serious about a culture change and continuing to develop young talent than maybe it's for the best that he leaves.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
