    Re: 2017 Offseason Thread

I thought we were back to everybody treading water until LeBron retires so what's it matter if IT gets the max or not.

    With that said...

Right now, it would be silly to think the Celtics wouldn't, but I'm not sure any other team would (except the Nets because they like ****ing with people).

If you go to SBNation, there are Heat fans there that think the Celtics will be losing to Miami every year.

      Like, they really believe it.

      So I'm not surprised anymore.

Exactly I can't think of many teams that NEED a PG. There are maybe 10 teams at most. I remember hearing Ainge say when shopping Rondo, that 2/3 of the teams were fine with their PG situation and I'm willing to be that number hasn't really changed in 4/5 years. Now how many of those teams have max cap space, 4/5. But then he has had only 1 or 2 great years, is 28/29 years old, had a hip issue the year before, and his game isn't going to age that well. How many of those 4/5 teams will be willing to give $30M+ for 4 years to that player? I don't think it's that many.

That's his best fit. His talent level is much higher, but he's not going be a 1st option. A 6th man can be a 3rd option. Think Harden on the Thunder.

That's not what I said at all. I said that's his best fit on a championship team. Unless you have some elite rim protection, an elite wing, and a guard who can guard elite point guards, that's his best fit. But what team has ever had all 3? That's how he's going to win a title, if he does win one. He's a great player, but when it comes down to it, a 5'9 player is never going to be the guy on a championship team.

He didn't see the floor here enough to be completely fair in assessing him, but from what I saw if him in OKC and his little time here he sucks ***. I'm sure Pop will run his voodoo on him though and make him at least 14 and 5 type of guy though. He sucks defensively tho

People way too casually throw out that "he can't be a #1 option on a title team" Like... nobody can. That's an impossible bar.

*this has nothing to do with the conversation but it's a pet peeve of mine*

I was trying to figure out another way of what I was trying to say. And what I'm getting at is that I don't think he's that franchise, #1 player, foundational piece like a KD, Lebron, Westbrook, Harden, Anthony Davis, KAT, etc. That's the more of the type of player I was talking about.

Put it this way. How many games do they win last year without IT2?

Or how many games do the Celtics win in the playoffs without him? He certainly carried them in at least one game vs. Wizards.

Otoh, only game they won in the Cavs series was after he was shut down.

I mean he only played 1 full game of the Cavs series.. that's not really a fair assessment lol.

Still, he was the best player/1st option on an ECF team. I think it's a bit drastic to say he's going to have to reduce his role all the way down from a #1 guy to being a 6th man in order to win 2 more series.

IT is more than capable of being a prime scoring punch of a championship caliber team. His size is always going to work against him, but it's much easier to hide a 5'9 guard than it would be if he was a 6'8 big accustomed to the block.

IT is smart enough to realize the scoring load is no longer going to be on him for long stretches of time, and Boston's wing players can provide that.

Again, where did I say he couldn't? That's the idea of a spark plug 6th man. Y'all overreacting to the words "6th man". I know he can ball. He just isn't suited to being a starting PG on a championship team. Unless y'all get him an elite 2 way wing, elite rim protection, and a guard who can guard elite point guards. Nobody has all 3.

Smart is going to be able to spell him defensively at times - they have such a diverse wing group that they'll also assist in hiding his defensive woes. AB did this a lot last year for them.

I definitely think IT has the capability of being a championship-caliber starting PG. He's there to score, and be the guy to go to for heat checks. Not to shutdown.

I just don't think it'll work. I think it'd be better with him as the best 6th man of all time.

AB leaving really hurts - him and Klay are the only 2 guards that can lock up top point guards, and provide offense. Smart can't shoot.

They're stacked on the wing, but they lack a true #1 option. IT just isn't big enough, and Hayward isn't that great. They have guys who can be 2/3 options, but they have no chance unless they grab a true number 1.
