2017 Offseason Thread
The Wizards haven't reached out to John Wall yet, but they expect to discuss an extension this summer with the four-time All-Star since he was named to the All-NBA for the first time in his seven-year career.
An extension with Wall will be the top priority of the offseason in which Otto Porter is also a restricted free agent, league sources tell CSNmidatlantic.com.
Wall signed a five-year, $80 million extension in 2013 when the salary cap was just less than $60 million. The 2013-14 season was the final year of his rookie scale deal and then the last three years have been part of the extension. He has two years left.
After the collective bargaining agreement was renegotiated and approved earlier this year, a Designated Veteran Player Extension was added. It's another mechanism to help teams retain their own free agents because they can offer significantly more money -- and an extra year -- than another team that doesn't hold his Bird rights.

That All-NBA selection means that Wall, who averaged a career-high in points (23.1), assists (10.7), steals (2.0) and field-goal accuracy (45.1%), qualifies for 35% of the cap instead of the standard 30% max. Previously, a player was required to be in the league 10 years to be eligible for 35%.
Wall can add up to four years of an extension on the two years that he has left for almost $170 million.
From league sources close to the situation, Wall wants to see a bigger picture plan on where the franchise is headed before committing for longer. The Wizards won 49 games this season and advanced to the conference semifinals for the third time in four years.
The salary cap for 2017-18 is projected to be almost double of what it was four years ago at $101 million. Before settling on what to do with Porter's contract, the Wizards have to figure out if they can lock in their best player and go from there in the offseason.

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
Why would Wall hesitate to sign that extension?
He wants to see what the team does with other roster moves?
Well if he signs that extension, it will be more difficult for the team to sign a big free agent.
After they pay him and Porter, that's basically going to be the team for the next 5 years or so.
Beal got his big payday last year.
Team as-is should be good enough for about 50 wins a year and a threat to make the ECF.
To get more depth, they're going to have to get good players later in the draft and hope they develop. Or sign a couple of vets for fairly cheap but who still produce.Comment

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
Why would he hesitate?
Because they have no bench and Gortat is aging (and weighing his "options" this summer). Behind Gortat is ****ing Mahimi who is worthless on the perimeter and doesn't have the offensive game Gortat does. Which is saying a lot considering how little Gortat can actually do.
Plus, I still think he's trying to get Cousins to team up with him in DC.

If they sign Porter, this will not be the team for the next 5 years. They'll still be able to make additional moves over that span.

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
Yeah but they're hemmed in because of that Mahimi deal, aren't they?
According to this site, the Wizards will be over $22 million over the cap:

That's not even accounting for Porter's new deal.
Bojan also an RFA this summer.
Cousins will be UFA after 2017-18 season but Wizards will have cap space after the 2018-19 season when Wall, Gortat and Morris will all be UFAs. Also several UFAs on the bench.
They could trade away a starter or two to open up cap space if they really want Cousins. Maybe Gortat and Morris since they will be on cheap, expiring deals. But may have to also throw in someone like Porter or picks.
They really need a better bench, with improvement needed from players like Burke and Oubre. I see they don't have a first-round pick this year.Comment

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
Jazz and Milos Teodosic have once again expressed interest in each other. We'll see if Teodosic actually wants to leave Europe this time.

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
Oubre will continue to develop and I trust Brooks to be a good influence on him offensively this off-season. I'm not worried about him.
Burke didn't play much (if any) once Jennings got here. His pace is slower and he falls into ISO too much. From what I saw he's a score first/pass second type of PG.
Grunfield has put them/kept them in a spot, but he manages to eek out just enough talent production to keep his ****ing job.

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
Supposedly he's looking for a deal in the $25-30 Mil range and that you guys, the Nets and another team are interested him. I'd love to have him but not at that amount and would rather go after Livingston, who's the same age as Milos and proven as well.#RespectTheCultureComment

I think it's a foregone conclusion that he's leaving since he's said he wants to compete against the best and he's done everything he's needed in Europe.

Main concern with him is defense.

And they did try trading for Millsap but Hawks didn't wanna trade himComment

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
Yeah he has connections to both of us(played under Snyder, who was on a team owned by Prokhorov).
Y'all are in a better position then us to give that money while we have to be more cautious about who we spend it on, lol.

Re: 2017 Offseason Thread
GMs don't just say that if they're confident in bringing back a guy. That's about $25M we'd save by not bringing him back.
