Re: 2017 Eastern Conference Playoffs - 2nd Round Discussion Thread

I saw some of that Celts/Wiz game last night....Holy crap was that some crazy stuff. It looked like something from back in the day what with all the physicality. I can't say I want to see that all the time in my basketball viewing but it's nice to see some of that.

I wish the Raptors would vent their frustration that way. Of course, most of the folks on here would just laugh at it so maybe discretion is the better part of valour.

Speaking of the Raps, Lowry's participation in tonight's game looks really doubtful. He didn't practice yesterday and didn't do any basketball activities this morning either.

Not saying IT has never flopped here though.
Yeah, it's that you have a different definition of "flop". You're right, IT doesn't "flop" (much anyway... that I know) as you've described. But it's also not up faking and then drawing contact to get to the line.

IT (like what Harden gets hammered for) will leap into any defender near him, and because he's so small it looks like someone shoved him as hard as they can. He does it when he drives all the time. Smart tries to do it too, but he's not fast enough to get defenders in position to sell it as much, and he's too big to go flying when it happens.

Honestly a lot of players do it these days, but it works especially well for IT because of his size and speed.

Try watching these two teams play on one tv and watching the Orioles/Red Sox on another tv... 2 different nights.

Needless to say, I'm not a big fan of Boston sports right now (not that I've ever been but especially right now).

IT may not be a flopper, but he damn sure is a flailer which is almost as bad.

I dunno. I find the flopping just straight up embarrassing. It's taking advantage of crappy refs. The flailing is more or less taking advantage of your defender imo.

How do you figure though? They're both the same concept. Flailing on a shot attempt is specifically to sell contact to make the ref call a foul based on seeing you jerking your body in a manner that suggests you were hit harder than you were in most cases.

All year for example and especially this postseason IT has lived at the free throw on that play that he comes around the screen at the three point line and as his man is fighting around the screen he just jumps into his own man's back and flings the ball at the basket knowing full well he wasn't taking a shot. That's a play to specifically to "take advantage of the referee" and make him give him three shots. There's more but that's the most egregious that comes to mind.

If you get hit while you are taking a shot it's a foul. So selling that contact isn't as much of an issue to me.

Flopping like you were shoved when on replay you clearly were not is totally different. Players are fined for that now. Are they fined for selling contact on jumpers?

Leaping into a defender and creating the contact isn't a foul. Unfortunately they call it. A LOT. So he's just doing what he has to do to get the call, but we both know that IT initiates a lot of contact and flails to draw the foul on them.

Speaking of the Raps, Lowry's participation in tonight's game looks really doubtful. He didn't practice yesterday and didn't do any basketball activities this morning either.
Powell and Lowry a few hours ago:

"We can’t allow that type of freedom, that type of comfortability with [James] or any other player, to be able to spin the ball like that. It’s disrespectful, but it shows us that we’re playing too soft," he said Friday afternoon. "We need to come out with a mentality and a physicality and a force on both ends that says that you’re not gonna get anything easy. It shouldn’t have happened. We can’t let that type of stuff happen in the series. It stops tonight.”

Kyle Lowry had similar thoughts adding, "I was pretty upset. Not that he did it. He should spin the ball. He's comfortable. We can't let him be comfortable. We have to make him uncomfortable. He's in a situation right now where he's playing very comfortably and the things he's doing is comfortable. If I was comfortable, I would do the same thing."
Let's see if they back it up

To echo King, defenders are entitled to their space. Offensive fouls are easy to call when defenders are stationary but it is MUCH tougher when there's movement. Under the basket you see a lot of contact with no calls because the defenders jump straight up in the air... the same concept is true at the 3 point line.

Similarly, a defender running next to you is entitled to his path so if you change your path to run into him, that shouldn't be a foul. These two things are what IT abuses to no end.

The "rip through" is a bs move, but THAT really is a foul. What King and I are talking about is tricking the refs.

Toronto really wanting to try and place the pace game against Cleveland?

Bron Bron getting those Harden amount of free throw attempts. Toronto's transition D is pitiful lol
