Re: ben wallace something people should know...
So I guess when Wallce was giving Ronny that choke hold, he didn't expect something to happen...Ronny did well by staying calm and not retaliating, but I think when he got the beer thrown at him , he was like:"I stands what i can stands, and now I stand it no more". Eventually all hell broke lose.Comment

Re: ben wallace something people should know...
There is blame to go around, but most behavior occured pretty much within known parameters of behavior in pro sports, you have Ben Wallace angry after a hard foul and shoving Artest around, that happens a lot in sports and the NBA in general, thats nothing you will hear much or see much written about. The ref seperates them, Artest lays down on the scorer table and takes the headset and talks and jokes to the Pacers radio guy, now that is unusual behavior already and in the situation is likely to enflame an already frustrated arena.
Okay but thats nothing outrageous yet, we just see that Artest isnt exactly helping matters. Then a fan throws a plastic cup at Artest which is not nice and certainly unusual as in it wont happen in every game but still not unheard of and in some sports like baseball not that uncommon either. Now lets look at where we are at this moment. Artest is not hurt or injured, he is not all soaked in beer either, he still is on the scorers table where he a minute earlier just joked around with a radio personality (so much to heat of the moment). And now hit by a relatively soft object, Artest freaks out and runs into the crowd to exert punishment for the thrown plastic cup.
What I am trying to say is that you had an angry emotional athlete who engages in some shoving and pushing with an opponent and an unruly angry crowd engaging in classless behavior, neither is desirable or something to be proud of, but neither story would dominate Sportscenter for a few days would it? However the Pacers going into the stands to fight the unruly fans, thats the outrageous, the "OMG DID I JUST SEE THAT?" part. Thats the part that goes beyond the parameters of regular behavior in sports events.
We have all been at sports events where fans have thrown objects on the field of play, we have all seen shoving and pushing between angry players, its nothing that would keep you up till 4 am to argue about, nothing that gets NBA commentators to act all sombre a day afterwards, but I cant say I have personally witnessed a player running into the stands to fight fans. I have seen footage from such fights in the NHL of the 70s but thats already 30 years ago and the NBA is a bit of a different matter due to the fact that basketball isnt as physical a game as hockey. (I was actually taught in school by my coach that basketball is a "non-physical" game, yeah he was just a bit old-fashioned)

Not that there is for Artest. But Wallace and Pistons fan are just as much to blame as anyone else."Never trust a big butt and a smile."-Ricky Bell
