Re: Eastern Conference Playoffs - 1st Round Discussion Thread

I was thinking about this last night, do you guys think coaches are too quick to pull players who are in foul trouble? I get the strategy behind it, you want your players to be out there in the 4th and you’re worried the other team might attack any player who is in foul trouble, but i say trust your guys a little more. Especially ones who aren’t prone to fouling a lot. Oladipo has fouled out a grand total of 1 time in his career. He finished the game last night with 3 fouls so not even close to fouling out. And really, if McMillan let Dipo play with those first half fouls and let’s say he ended up fouling out with a few minutes to go in the 4th... I think I would’ve taken that vs him only playing like 8 minutes the whole first half when the Cavs were up double digits.

You'd trust the refs against certain players to be fair?

Like you'd keep your guy in vs Harden who drives and whips his head back EVERYTIME?

Lol that’s a good point but Harden is a bit different. I wouldn’t trust that. I’d be worried about Dipo on LeBron picking up fouls too but Bogdanovich has spent most of the time guarding Bron anyway.

I would have left him in. Like I said I didn't even see the second foul happen, but sounded like it was more of a fluke play. Oladipo isn't matched up with someone who is going to put pressure on him to commit a foul. So basically his only worry would have been another charge, or a foul on a rebound or something. Both or which he can do a decent job of controlling.

He hasn't had a great game yet IMO. Maybe he's just better at home.

Keeping him in could've backfired though and that's exactly what happened with George Hill, picking up his 5th foul in the 3rd.

Plus you gotta remember who's on the other side of the floor; LeBron and his IQ. Dipo stays in and then LeBron is gonna be putting him in PnR situations to get Dipo switched on him and then attack, attack, attack. So he's either drawing another foul or he's gonna get easy buckets posting up or create an open shot for a teammate cause Dipo would need help in the post. I think it was the right move to pull him.

                      Nope. Nor has Sabonis.

Yeah he's looked even worse. They need to find a way to get him going. He had pretty good chemistry with Oladipo running pick and rolls, slips and all so I'd like to see if they can get any of that going at least.

Bogdanovic can only drill triples. He can't handle, guard, rebound, or run. To contain his offense his defenders simply need to attend to him and don't buy his ball and up fakes.

I do. Granted, I'm not coach, but my thought process is this.

Let's say you have two choices. A guy has 4 fouls early in the third quarter and and you have to make a choice on whether to sit him or not. I'm going to simplify this by assuming you don't have to sub for fatigue.

                            1. You sit him out until the fourth quarter. You lose all his production in the third quarter. You put him back in early in the fourth quarter and he lasts until the end of the game, just picking up one more foul. In total, he plays 12 minutes in the second half and is there at the end.

                            2. You keep him in the game. He picks up a fifth foul somewhere near the end of the third quarter and fouls out late in the fourth quarter. You don't have him at the end of the game, but he's played 18-20 minutes instead of 12 minutes.

So, then, what do you value more? Is his extra six minutes on the floor worth not having him at the end of the game? I think, in general, it probably is, especially if by not having him play the entire third quarter, the game gets out of hand (such as Oladipo in the first quarter last night). It doesn't really matter if he's in there at the end of the game if it's already a blowout.

Plus, let's say you sit a guy with two fouls in the first half and he ends the game with four or five fouls. Essentially, at that point you've sat him for nothing as he may have not fouled out, anyways, and are just losing minutes where he could have been in.

But then again almost every basketball coach thinks differently, so I am probably wrong!

It's so easy for the other team to attack that guy though so I'am all for just subbing him instead.
