Re: Kobe Bryant, daughter Gianna, and at least three others die in helicopter crash
"As Celtics fans, we didn’t think Kobe Bryant could break our hearts one more time. We were wrong." - Sean Grande before tonight’s C’s/Pels game.
Surreal day and one I would like to soon forget to say the least. Unexpectedly lost an uncle in his mid 50’s from a massive heart attack earlier in the day. Died right there on the basketball court during a weekly Sunday morning game of pickup ball. Then the news of Kobe and his young teenage daughter’s death started to filter in while trying to process everything else.
Be good, people.

So have I - I thought about that earlier this afternoon - I have a 20 year old daughter and a 13 year old - the emotion he and his daughter must have felt in those final minutes - I’m crying even typing thisComment

Dale Earnhardt literally died on the track, which would be more like Reggie Lewis or someone like Hank Gathers.. Like I mentioned before, Kobe was already retired. This feels unnecessary.. And I can't speak for all retired players, but if I were Kobe I would want those who looked up to me to be able to wear my number.. If it's just Dallas fine, Miami randomly has 23 retried, but I really hope this is as far as goes.. A league wide thing would be a big fat NO from me.Comment

I don't think it's really worth debating at the moment, man. It's barely been 8 hours. People are emotional. Nothing has officially been declared yet.Comment

"Nothing has officially been declared yet" but if you don't push back (I'm sure Silver lurks in OS) people start getting ideas.
But Silver is a smart guy, he knows there are other elements to take into consideration beside Kobe's spectacular career and the tragedy that transpired today and I'm sure Mr. Silver is mindful of that.OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

Ok Prince, Bowie and others haven't effected me as hard as Kobe not being here anymore, especially knowing one of his little girls passed with him. Damn damn damn

Re: Kobe Bryant, daughter Gianna, and several others die in helicopter crash
Can't believe I woke up on my birthday to get such tragic news. As a Suns fan I had a dislike of the Lakers and Kobe but really I appreciated his greatness and knew he was on of the GOATs. I watched a lot of his interviews after he retired and he inspired me many times and really listened to what it took to be great.
I watched him in person a lot going to Suns games and it was a big thing that the suns beat him and Lakers in a playoff series because it was so hard and you knew he always brought it.
I admired him as a father as well and what he does with his girls. I have a little girl now and I just cried my eyes out for Vanessa and the rest of Kobes family losing a husband and a child. I just can't imagine.

Some of my fave Kobe moments were all off the court. Not sure how familiar people in the US are with it, but just YouTube Cabbie and Kobe.
Those interviews were legendary. Rare to find such gold between an interviewer and athlete on a consistent basis like that.Comment

The scary thing about helicopters is if something fails or goes wrong, they seem to get way off kilter and go completely wacky. At least a plane can still glide and try and make a crash landing.Comment

Re: Kobe Bryant, daughter Gianna, and several others die in helicopter crash
Heard about this when i was at work and didn't believe it at first. Still hard to believe it. This is a celebrity death that hits hard for me. I was just 11 when he won his first championship. He came into the nba when i was only like 7, and him and Oneal were like the reason i got into and loved basketball in the first place. I grew up watching the guy hard to believe he is gone, and only 41 years old. His daughter being with him just makes it even more sad and the other 7 people who are gone to. Just so sad.Comment

I agree with you there.
I just wanted to share a memory I have. I’ll always remember watching basketball with my pops. Those are some of the fondest, happiest memories of my lifetime. I miss him every single day, but I cherish our times watching the playoffs every year. He was a huge Kobe fan. I remember the game 4 vs Phoenix in 2006 when the Lakers came back and Kobe hit that game winner. I called up my dad from college and he told me he wanted to see the series go 7 games. I remember watching the rest of the series at home with him, and of course Phoenix would eventually come back from down 3-1 and beat LA, while I was hoping Nash and the Suns would lose.
That was the first moment I thought about today in terms of Kobe’s legacy, because it is probably my top Kobe moment that springs to mind. There are so many, but it made me think about better times, watching hoops in the spring with my Dad.PSN ID - A_Dubya13Comment
