How do you handle losing two loved ones at once like that. Brutally losing one is hard enough man that's a nightmare for Vanessa and her family. How do you recover.

I agree, I dont want to see his number retired league wide. Yes it was tragic what happened, and he is 1 of the all time greats, but as MJ once said, if your going to retire my number, then you need to retire the greats that came before me.

I thought it was cool to see teams taking 24 second violations, and 8 second back court violations to start the games, in honor of him.

People need to also remember there was 8 others who died today in this crash, including Kobe's 13 yr old daughter, to me thats even more tragic, to see a little girl who had her life taken away before it ever really began.

I'm 43 years old and I still do this...one day I did it while cleaning up around the house and when I heard myself it surprised me. So I had probably been doing this out of my subconscious for years before I even realized that it had become second nature.

Today came so close to being just another day. Wish it had been. A great loss for everyone who likes basketball and a tragedy for the Bryant family

I'm still crushed. This is the most a famous death has affected me. Especially for his wife and those 3 kids. The 7 month won't remember her daddy but she will damn sure know who he was.

what I love about Kobe is how he wasnt a bitter old head. He was always encouraging the younger generation of players. always giving them his personal time, training, advice. One thing you always hear from players is how accessible he was.

The most I see is probably purple and/or yellow tribute armbands.

They can literally press those jerseys an hour before the game at the arena if they really had to. That’s how quick the process is. I don’t think anybody is talking mass producing the jerseys to sell to the public but if you’re doing it for the players to wear on court for the game, that’s like what 26, 28 jerseys? They do more than that on draft night for players getting selected.

Re: Kobe Bryant, daughter Gianna, and several others die in helicopter crash

I don't think I'm unique in the fact that Kobe was basketball to me when I had reached an age where the game actually started making sense to me. He's responsible for my now lifelong Lakers fandom and he's my favorite athlete of all time. This whole thing is incredibly sad and my head was hurting last night and eventually just had to pry myself away from the phone.

I love my kids and even my 2yo having tubes put in his ears and having to be put to sleep to have a tooth extracted was hard for me. I've always been a "tough guy", but kids will soften you up fast. I couldn't imagine and don't even like to think about what could be going through someone's head seconds before they realize they along with their child is about to die. It's incredibly scary and sad. My wife and kids are staying out of town at my in-laws and I had to get in the car and go see them.

All of these lives were lost in a blink of an eye.. we really do all have to cherish what we have in life and it serves as a reminder to make that time for your family even when you don't think you have it.

Just a caution, there are some terrible memes out there. He and Gianna are still survived by the rest of their family, man.

Just out of curiosity (and I know this for the most part is too soon), but clearly some more information will come of the cause of the tragic incident, correct? Even if it was a private helicopter, do they still communicate with the ground somehow?

I know with planes you do, I'm assuming helicopters are the same.

Man, I feel like yesterday is going to be one of those days where you will always remember where you were when you heard the news. As a Celtics fan, Kobe was definitely a guy I "loved to hate" throughout his playing career but I always had respect for him as a competitor. The fact that we won't get to see him grow old like we have with the other NBA legends or even at his old HOF ceremony.... it just sucks and I'm still not sure it's even really hit me yet.

This for sure. The guy is a legend and left a huge legacy. Hell, we someone says the Kobe everyone knows how you're talking about. Not only that but think about all of the Kobe/Kobi/Cobe,etc. that are running around today. You know those parents were influenced by Kobe.

                            Here's a 2016 article from Yahoo

According to Yahoo’s The Vertical, over 14,000 children were named after Kobe during his 20-year NBA career. The report explains that only 350 children were named Kobe during Bryant’s rookie season in 1997. Yet from 2000-02, during Bryant’s NBA championship three-peat with Shaquille O’Neal, more than 4,300 children received the namesake.

I mean, talk about leaving behind a legacy...
With that said, his main legacy is his other daughters. I can't imagine what his wife and girls are going through. Yesterday I was really sad for most of the day but I heard John Anderson on Sportscenter talk about how he could imagine Vanessa going home to an empty house and an empty bed and I just couldn't take it anymore - I just put on NetFlix for the rest of the night to try and get my mind off of it. I just don't even want to think about what's going on with them right now.

Surreal day and one I would like to soon forget to say the least. Unexpectedly lost an uncle in his mid 50’s from a massive heart attack earlier in the day. Died right there on the basketball court during a weekly Sunday morning game of pickup ball. Then the news of Kobe and his young teenage daughter’s death started to filter in while trying to process everything else.

                            Be good, people.

Mid-50's, playing b-ball on a Sunday morning... I don't think I'd be going out on too much of a limb by saying he must have really loved playing b-ball. And if that's the case, he went out doing something he loved. Hopefully, knowing that brings you some comfort. Thoughts and prayers to you and your family over the coming days.

As a fan watching Kobe unwind and become more personable during his retirement was a major gift. I had already pictured him growing old being one of those wizened, NBA vets that take the young guys under their wings. You know - finally enjoying his legacy and all the hard work he put in to accomplish some truly amazing milestones. I think a lot of us had imagined that and its fair to say we took it for granted.

This one hurts. Same level as Chris Cornell for me. I literally sat in the chair after reading my phone, hanging my head in my heads and just sitting there in a daze. I instantly remembered the first time I saw Kobe - he had a cameo on Hang Time. From then on that was it. There were usually two people I was trying to be out in my driveway. MJ and Kobe. Iverson occasionally, but MJ and Kobe were the 1A and 1B.
