Markkanen not hitting open corner looks combined with Okoro being a spotty 3 and D guy not particularly good at either of those things is not helping here. The three of Allen, Mobley and Garland is keeping this score down.

          Wow. Gut wrencher.

But to hold the Jazz to 48 in the 2nd half after letting them get too comfortable early on is impressive and that final shot isn’t ideal but it’s one DG can make, it just didn’t fall.

I’m still not worried though. We’ve gone toe to toe with everybody we’ve played so far this season even with some big absentees.

Cavs really just need a shooting guard that looks like a starting NBA shooting guard. They have everything else. Defense, size, playmaking, a great bench.

I think some would say that’s Sexton, but I think seeing how good Garland has been without him and just how much better the offense is in his hands, I don’t think they can do-exist.

Not to compare them at all, but Garland needs something like Steph has with Klay. An elite shooter who doesn’t need to initiate offense with enough brains to know when to penetrate too and the size and intelligence to defend well too. Garland is going to be the guy defenses try to stop because he can be a 25 point, 8 assist guy in this league. If he has an elite shooter plus the Mobley/Allen front court I’m not sure how many teams can combat that.

The guy people talk about is Buddy Hield. I haven’t watched him enough since his early days to know if he’d fit but I don’t know if he’s right.

But I can’t speak highly enough of Garland. He was looked at as the expendable one of him and Sexton before this year. I think we have a nice combination of excellent young point guards in the league who are great at different things (Dejounte Murray is top of that list, for me. He’s like somebody gave Westbrook a brain for defense and taking care of the ball). Future looks good and Garland is part of that.

I think Sexton fits in many ways, he’s a great defender and does give secondary ball handling a playmaking. The team is huge so then starting two “small” guards doesn’t hurt as much as say Portland, especially since Sexton defends so well. It’s similar to what Utah has built in that sense.

But on the other hand Sexton IS an iso scorer and if Cleveland intends to build on Mobley then maybe it makes sense to not have Sexton as part of that core. It sucks for them because he’s now hurt and his contract will likely expire with Cleveland not wanting to pay him as much as someone else. Maybe they can work a sign and trade.

On the other hand if Rubio leaves not having another lead ball handler on the team would hurt them. I doubt Sexton wants to take a 6th man role though.

I feel like Hield is a great shooter but he’s a guy that just doesn’t do anything else and I feel like he’s never as productive of a guy when you ask him to be that 3rd 4th guy.. realistically that’s what you want him to be though. At the Memphis game the other night he looked a bit out of shape to me, and disengaged in the game overall unless he could get a shot. I just don’t think you would get the type of off ball movement out of him like you would a Klay type player.

If they can’t get a ideal fit from that standpoint the next best option might to be finding a guy who boosts defense. Get the Smart, Caruso, type of player to step in and compliment their defense and not make any stupid plays offensively.. or go the Milwaukee route with guys like Allen, Pat, Donte (I don’t mean random white guy) but just a guy who has no weaknesses and plays hard even though they don’t really have a strength either.

I feel like if they could land Terrence Ross on the cheap that might be a decent grab for this season. It would at least give them the rest of this year to see how a player like that fits, and decide what the plan for Sexton and Rubio would be at the end of this year.

In a “swing for the fence” type of move I could also see something like Love, Sexton, Okoro/Osman + first(s) to Toronto for Siakam and Trent Jr. it’s clear that Toronto’s future is with OG and Barnes at this point and getting back Sexton let’s them go to the two guard backcourt they have had success with (that Dragic isn’t giving them now). This would move Lauri into the Love backup role and the Cavs could start Siakam + Trent who was very strong as a combo guard next to Dame and should flourish next to Garland.

If Siakam became available Toronto would get tons of calls, but I’m not sure two young players like Okoro and Sexton plus a couple of firsts would be topped by another team. Likely a bit of an overpayment for Cleveland but free agents aren’t going to Cleveland and if the plan was to let Sexton walk anyways then it makes sense for them.

I’m a fan of Bridges and I think his play this season has justified the decision not to take the extension he was offered. He bet on himself and should get a decent contract out of it but I’m not sure what his upside is. He’s a strong, athletic, unselfish tweener but they’re not in huge demand. Is he going to be a Julius Randle type who can switch between either forward position and create his own chances by barrelling to the rim and hitting the occasional outside shot? Or is he going to be a Draymond type who can put all his focus on defense and playmaking? Outside of that I don’t think he has the size or skillset to be a consistent force in the league and I hope he doesn’t go in search of something he’s not going to get next season.
