Re: NBA Off Topic Thread
I usually go at Adam Silver and the league for attempting to "look" too progressive on issues, but this is more than an acceptable move.

NBA Off Topic Thread
Man, I'm from right outside the DC area (PG County to be exact) and no one has ever considered the Gil Zero/Butler/Jamison - era (sprinkle in a little MJ & young John Wall, respectively too) jerseys a "classic." [emoji38][emoji38][emoji38][emoji38][emoji38]
Why not go with the Webber - era or the actual classics of the Elvin Hayes/Wes Unseld - era? I'm gonna have to email the PR department and complain about this one.

And are those Wizards jerseys classics? No but they were also very popular in the urrrrea during those days. Always seen someone with the Jordan or the Gil one in the city, on the train and at the Gogo’s.
If I cop one of these, it’ll have either Arenas or Jordan on the back.Last edited by ProfessaPackMan; 08-11-2022, 03:48 PM.#RespectTheCultureComment

I don’t like retired numbers in general but it is what it is. Just don’t get it to the point where the people who revere the guy whose jersey you retired can’t wear it but set aside a day for guys who we know damn well would’ve been spitting on him if they had the chance to wear it.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Nothing wrong with that considering the impact he made and importance he had.

Re: NBA Off Topic Thread
Having said that, I didn't want to be THAT guy, but since cima beat me to it. I like that the NBA has honored him by doing this, but this does look pretty weak sauce on the league's part. We all know Bill Russell's story. We all know his accomplishments, what he stood for and what he meant to the league throughout his playing career and life after basketball. If he was worthy of having his number retired league wide (which he is) then this should have been done long ago when he was alive to see it. He was 88 years old, so it's not like he died suddenly and tragically like Kobe at a young age. So there's really no reason to just suddenly decide to retire his number because he died. I don't know it's a great gesture I just think it should have already happened because nothing about his legacy has changed except he isn't here any more.Comment

Even during the 75th season, that was a perfect chance to do it then too.
Someone like Kobe, you can't fault the league for only honoring him after because obviously you wouldn't expect to have to do something like that anytime soon.Comment

Y’all know how reactionary this league is. We learned this 2 summers ago when everything was going on, lol.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: NBA Off Topic Thread
I can’t really name too many players that got more flowers than Bill Russell when he was still with us. All of it very much deserved. From renaming the Finals MVP after him to the various honors he’s been presented with by the League. This is just another way to memorialize him.Comment

Man those Jerseys. Now I know how Pistons fans feel about their teal jerseys. Those were my first memories of first watching Basketball and those teams were horrible not even MJ could save thempart of the reason why I can't root for the Wizards but nostalgia is strong man. I hated those jerseys when they were around but they look good now.

Really scraping the bottom of the barrel there.
The Wizards were rocking a variant of these literally barely 10 years ago (they were still the primaries during JaVale's 2011 Dunk Contest performance). Seems odd to hear some folks clamoring for a design that had not moved the needle one iota for anyone since their initial introduction in 1997.
At this point I'm fully convinced that the surefire way to get your fans behind your jersey design is to discontinue it and repackage it as a retro shortly down the line. I'm already preparing for the "Goin' to Work" retros that'll inevitably sell like hotcakes once the Pistons abandon their current design for something else.Comment

I think the timing of the 2000s in general makes things feel not as far apart as other years. I can remember Kobe era Lakers rocking Magic era jerseys. Those jerseys, albeit with longer shorts, lasted up till like 98 or 99.
I’m sure there are other examples too but overall my point is something like “barely 10 years ago” can just as easily be worded as “in over a decade”, or “first introduced 25 years ago”. Which is technically why they picked THIS jersey in particular, it’s the 25th anniversary for them changing their name to the “Wizards”.Comment
