Nobody is saying he didn't get his flowers though. Cause he did, the league has done a lot to honor Bill Russell. We know this, we know all that he did. Among all of those honors, retiring his number league wide is probably the highest honor. That's almost what makes this look worse. While they were doing all that why not retire his number league wide too? He hasn't done anything else in the last decade that pushed his legend over the top to make himself number retired worthy. He was already that long ago.

It's not a big deal in the least bit, just was one of those moments where it happens and you're just like 'ehh that's a little sus NBA but whatever.'

That’s essentially what I’m saying though.

Had they ignored his legacy and impact on the league throughout the years I’d understand the idea of some sudden gesture being suspect, but giving him an honor no other player has gotten falls in line with the respect they’ve payed him throughout the years to me.
Sometimes they get it right, This is one of those times IMO.

League has to have that NY market in there regardless of how messy/not good either team is.

And they’ll be competing with GB-MIA, Rams-Broncos and Cards-Bucs on that day for ratings.

We already know how those are going to look, to those that care about stuff like that.

Edit: Just peeped they’re going to have the Bucks playing at the same time as the Packers that day. Roadman, who you choosing that day? [emoji102]

NFL will destroy them. Hard to see those games as being big events because it's regular season NBA and players/fans will act accordingly.

Also I’m REALLY behind here but I kinda see both sides of this whole Bill Russell thing. Personally I’m not really a fan of retiring a number league wide, but completely understand that if you’re going to do it he’s the guy you retire. I think he’s fully deserving of the honor. But like King said, just feels kinda weird to just jump to that out of the blue because he died. I felt the same with all the immediate Kobe reactions where we wanted to change every award, league logo, retire numbers, etc just because he was no longer living. IMO whole thing just gets a weird vibe when you base it on death like that. I get that’s just a personal opinion though. My thoughts just go to well what happens when Kareem passes, Magic, Bird, MJ, Duncan, Bron..

It’s hard for me to put Magic in that spot and not have Bird included with how linked the two of them were at that time. Maybe either one of them could have stood alone and “saved” the league in that sense, but we didn’t really get to see that play out with how synonymous they were with one another in that regard. Pretty much forever linked. That’s why on my list I actually listed the two of them rather than the Kobe, MJ, Bron.. They definitely elevated the league to where it is now, followed by Jordan who they basically took that blueprint from Magic&Bird and used it to hyper-market the **** out of one superstar like that. Something that had massive influence going forward but is also something many people hate about todays over-hype of players as well.

To me your point about Steph can’t really be just chalked up as that simple. He changed the game but he also changed how everyone even views the game. What is good/bad basketball, what’s a good shot, he quantified tons of analytical stats, changed the way GMs scout players and build teams. I don’t think in terms of on court/team personnel change another player really even comes close to the league wide impact Steph has had.

I’m not one of those who think that by default makes him the best PG ever, or a default top 10 player ever, or if you’re Bobby Marks the 2nd best player ever because of that impact.. but I do think, as far as my lifetime goes at least, he’s the most influential player on how the game is played of all time. Maybe guards like West and Big-O were that back in the 60’s, or Russell with teams targeting defensive bigs, but other than that I don’t even know who I would consider close. Maybe MJ with the whole “like Mike” and ushering in of all the high scoring guards, or LeBron with player movement/empowerment and perhaps a bit of Harden/Luka and this heliocentric style of ball could be attributed to him, or Dirk even with the perimeter oriented big man.... but even those feel really distant to Steph.

Never understood why they didn't go back to a similar look and that color scheme (when they moved to Brooklyn/back to NYC).

That was their original look (I believe) with Dr. J and it is way more iconic than their current knockoff Spurs look.
