That's a very misunderstood phrase. People mistake "closest thing" for "as good as." No one is saying Kobe Bryant is as good as Michael Jordan. They are saying he is closer to him than anyone else. It's like saying if MJ was on Step 50 of the Basketball Talent Staircase, then Kobe would be on Step 20, with T-mac, AI, Lebron, etc. on the Steps behind him.

My thoughts exactly.

Kobe, hard to say, but as of now he's the closest thing to MJ that we got. It remains to be seen if this one holds up(a few more rings would do the trick). Carter is Dominique, minus the heart and at times the desire to play hard. He is still a showman in the same vein as Wilkins.

I need to throw in my two cents, Kobe is a great player but I just don't see him as another MJ.
Vince is a good overall players but from aside from the dunks that where th e comparison to Dominique stops, Dominique could score at will when need be and Carter doesn't have that ability as a shooter.

Dunks was really the sole basis of that comparison. But you're right. Carter's much more of a jump shooter these days and doesn't get to the hole like Nique' did.
