Bernard Hopkins Vs Jermain Taylor (neXt in line) July16th, 2005

I know its a little premature since the fight is about 2 weeks away, but im already hyped and already pumped up for this fight.

Is Jermain's time now, or is he next in line to be exicuted.

niether guy is talking trash, but here is what they were saying at the press conference...

Jermain is very soft spoken and to some might come off as sounding scared, but I think he's ready, and I believe his time is now.

You know who im going for??? haha, I think Taylor will pull out the upset though. I hope we get to see Mayweather vs Mosley on Nov12. Either that or Mayweather vs Hatton. Think Mayweather is too much for Hatton though.

If Hopkins gets old all of a sudden, Taylor will take a close Dec.. I don't think he's all that impressive.. Fighting nobodies & 'decent' comp doesn't make you good.. Look & Mark Breland & David Reid, to name a few..

          Bernard's Taylor-made eXecution
Jermain Taylor may be ‘Heir Apparent’, but that’s only if he can deal with the defeat King Bernard plans to bestow upon him
Story and photos by Chris Cozzone

“Bernard Hopkins will make Jermain Taylor look like an amateur.”

“Bernard Hopkins will make Jermain Taylor’s head spin—he’ll look to his corner to see what he should do next.”

“He’ll be the whipping boy of my controlled aggression.”

No, really, champ. Let us know how you really feel.

Bernard “the Executioner” Hopkins, Undisputed Middleweight Champion and veteran of half a hundred fights, has never been one to pull his punches—especially out of the ring.

In fact, if he fought like he talked, the throwback fighter and natural-born orater would probably be going on his 50th record title defense on July 16 instead of his 21st.

But let him talk—too few fighters since Muhammad Ali have resisted the ever-increasing pressure of political correction; too many pugs have lost their personalities trying to be too humble, too respectful.

Not so Bernard Hopkins. He’s never had to persuaded to answer a reporter’s question, never had to be fed scripted lines from a promoter . . . .

This time around is no different.

In the World According to Hopkins, Taylor has become a “programmed” “country boy”, a Volkswagen trying to race with a Ferrari; Taylor’s promoter, Lou Dibellla, with whom Hopkins has had legal battles, is a “man with female emotions” who reminds the champ of an ex-girlfriend who acted “like an ***” when he didn’t give her any attention; and Hopkins himself, if he was weak and naïve, that is, if he allowed himself to believe all the hype about Taylor’s size, age and speed making the difference in the fight, would liken himself to a “pretty girl who, for lack of self-esteem, starts believing she’s ugly because everyone tells her so.”

          Therefore, says the champ:

“I will show the world that Bernard Hopkins is not here by any accident, by any fluke, or from any favors by the boxing industry.”

After 50 scraps, Hopkins has shown no signs of physical deterioration; nor has he revealed one ounce of mental attrition—be it memory or cynic wit.

“Butch Lewis, Don King, Lou Dibella . . . I got a fleet of enemies. I’ve made a lot of people upset. I’ve been called stupid. But when I am successful in the ring, I know that someone will go to bed that night upset, and early in the morning, someone will wake up with a major hangover. They can try and drink it away, or use some other substance, but I know I’ve sent him in that direction.”

That’s part of what fuels Hopkins, so much in fact, that he says that on the 16th, “Jermain Taylor’s body is gonna look like Jermain Taylor, but his head will be different. I’ll be looking at Lou Dibella’s face . . . Jermain Taylor will look like 30 different people. People who, if I stop breathing, will have a party.”

Come July 16, Hopkins, as he’s done time and time again since 1993 when his own party crashed, plans to continue his role as the ultimate, undisputed party pooper.

However, this time around, Hopkins may be due for his toughest fight since Felix “Tito” Trinidad—well, we thought that was going to be a tough one, anyway, and we could all be mistaken again.

In a match-up that has all the makings of a summer blockbuster, Hopkins will put all four belts on the line against the undefeated former Olympian Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor who, at 23-0 (17 KOs), has become, in the minds of many, a big enough threat to warrant him just a 2 to 1 underdog.

As always, Hopkins remains in good humor regarding talk from the ‘Bad Intentions’ camp.

“’I’m a bigger guy, I’m a bigger guy, I’m a bigger guy’ . . . Jermain Taylor is saying all these things—he’s bigger, he’s faster, he’s going to win—because he’s been told to. But it’s not in his heart. It’s not real.

“He’s being programmed an told to say the things. Programmed to react and think. He’s just a country boy from Arkansas—he’s being dictated . . . I just sit back and laugh at him, because when he gets in the ring and realizes, when he sees Pat Burns and Lou Dibella and his surrogate father are not in there with him, those who gave him everything to say, on Fight Night, when he’s left in there with the baddest man in the planet, when that first punch is thrown and I’m letting him know it’ll either be a short night or a slow death, it will change his demeanor.”

But what about Taylor’s size, his greater strength?

“I take brains and skills over muscle anyday,” says Hopkins. “Tyson was the strongest heavyweight in my era—but what happened when he ran into a smarter Buster Douglas and his muscles didn’t work?

          Well, there’s youth to consider, then . . . .

“It’s not going to look like ‘old vs. young’ . . . They will never me convince me that I’m 40. Only the boxing ring and Father Time is in control of that. It’s like telling a pretty girl she’s not pretty. If she has low self-esteem she’ll start looking in the mirror. That’s not me. I am an experienced athlete.

So, what about that never-ceasing jab of Taylor’s?

“I will take everything he does well and use it against him . . . that jab of his depends. It was only accurate when the guy didn’t move his head. Joppy did better than most, early on, but they better teach him something else in case it doesn’t work.

“I don’t put much emphasis on one punch. Comes a time when you run into a good enough opponent who will take it away. Like Tito vs. me. When Jermain Taylor’s jab gets taken away, let’s see what a great ‘heir apparent’ he is. I never say I got a great right, a great jab—I’m an all-round fighter.”

It’s that all-roundedness that will transform pugilist into professor:

“It’s bad enough to deal with one or two things a fighter does well, but five or six or ten things? For a young guy like Jermain Taylor . . . I’m both matador and bull. It’s the adjustments I can make, in a split second, that’ll make Jermain Taylor’s head spin. He’ll look to his corner to see what to do. You can’t teach a fighter to react when surprised if he hasn’t been taught. He will be schooled . . . .”

          Equally important is hunger:

“This is about motivation. It’s what keeps me hungry, that demeanor. I have to look at my life before I turned pro fighter. Mentally, I can reach back and remember. I haven’t forgotten, even with the millions in the bank, with the beautiful wife and daughter. I know where I had to be a man, in a make-or-break situation.

“That’s something Jermain Taylor cannot relate to. It’s not his fault, he should be proud it’s not part of his resume. But it’s something I got.“

With the recent string of ‘no mas’ bouts—Kostya Tszyu quitting before the final 12th round, Mike Tyson losing his heart, sitting on the canvas with an ‘I-don’t-want-to-be-here’ look on his face—some believe Hopkins may fall victim to the same bug should Taylor start to pull off an upset:

“I fear no man on this earth who breathes the same air I breathe. That’s what gives me the edge. That edge may seem so small and minute, but it’s my lifeline. I haven’t forgot. If you forget you become average. I know where I come from and if it didn’t fail me then, it won’t fail me now. It won’t fail you in the 8th round when you’ve been hit and your mouthpiece is hanging out of your mouth.

“There were plenty of times when I could’ve quit. I could’ve said the hell with this . . . but this is when I become a fighter. This will be like Walt Disney World. You talk about quitting? No, no, no, no, no! You got to look at Bernard Hopkins’ history. Quitting is not in my DNA, not in my genetics.”

While it’s (oftentimes, painfully) obvious that Hopkins may know his greatness; while the conviction of his words may sway bettors hoping to earn a lump sum on the underdog; he goes out of his way to make sure we know this is not a mismatch—not a repeat of Mayweather vs. Gatti (but more like Mayweather vs. Hatton).

“Capabilities and talent? This is not a mismatch . . . Jermain Taylor is ready. If anyone else had these belts, he’d beat him. But it’s the timing of it. He’s up against the wrong fighter who has all the belts.”

Hopkins vs. Taylor is Jones vs. Hopkins—in which Hopkins was handed a lesson. It is also one other fight: “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler vs. John “the Beast” Mugabi.

“That’s one of my favorite fights and it’s perfect for this one. Mugabi is bigger. Stronger. And not scared. He comes forward. Isn’t that the same blueprint? Hagler is slowing down, he’s going to be tested—it’s perfect . . . The ‘Beast’ put up a gallant performance—but he got beat up and was never the same.”

If Taylor can learn, like Hopkins did against Jones, he’ll come back a champion. It’ll depend on whether Taylor can tear a page from a book by Nietzsche, or, for the less-sophisticated, Conan the Barbarian: “That which does not kill you will only make you stronger.”

“In the mean time,” says Hopkins, “Jermain Taylor will have to pay the price.”

Im pulling for Jermain Taylor ofcourse since hes one of my favorites. Hes definatly going to have to put on a performance for the ages and fight the fight of his life to beat Hopkins.

It all depends on how commited Jermain Taylor is to win the fight, and not to just be competitve...hes gotta be willing to take the risks to win the fight.
