Liakhovich outpoints Brewster for heavyweight belt

    Brewster loses...

CLEVELAND -- Sergei Liakhovich won the WBO heavyweight championship in his first fight in 18 months, unanimously outpointing Lamon Brewster.

The 32-year-old Brewster, considered the more powerful puncher, instead absorbed a pounding at the hands of the taller fighter from Belarus in the 12-round bout.

After taking a left to the ribs late in the final round, Liakhovich dropped his hands and signaled for Brewster to come after him. The champion tried his best, but by then his punches had run out of steam.

Liakhovich (23-1, 14 KOs) did serious damage in the sixth, ninth and 11th rounds, but Brewster (33-3, 29 KOs) lived up to his "Relentless" nickname by withstanding the pounding that left welts across his face.

Brewster had successfully defended his title three times after winning it in April 2004 with a fifth-round knockout of Wladimir Klitschko, the younger brother of former WBC titleholder Vitali Klitschko.

This time, the 6-foot-1, 228-pounder had trouble with his bigger foe, although he knocked the 29-year-old to his knees as the seventh round ended.

The pace took its toll on both fighters, who appeared tired in the eighth and most of the ninth -- until the 6-4, 240-pound Liakhovich landed a left that sent Brewster staggering. Despite cornering the champion, who tried to cover up, Liakhovich didn't have enough left to put Brewster away.

Brewster cornered the challenger and threw several powerful punches that found their mark in the fifth round. Liakhovich not only withstood the assault, but put the champion against the ropes with a series of combinations just before the bell.

Liakhovich carried the action in the sixth round, too, as they went toe-to-toe in the center for the ring. After Brewster missed with a left, Liakhovich cornered Brewster and landed several combinations. He ran Brewster against the ropes as many in the crowd began screaming for the fight to be stopped.

Brewster's handlers worked on a cut in the champ's nose between rounds. The right-hander took more abuse early in the seventh before knocking the challenger to his knees seconds before the bell.

Strong finish helps push Mayweather to victory

Strong finish helps push Mayweather to victory

LAS VEGAS -- A near-riot in the closing seconds of the 10th round only delayed the inevitable: A dominant Floyd Mayweather Jr. victory.

After a highly competitive first half of his fight with Zab Judah, Mayweather took over and showed why he is the world's best fighter, pound-for-pound, winning a unanimous decision in their welterweight showdown Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The fight was called "Sworn Enemies" because of the heated relationship between the fighters, but the venom spilled over to the corners late in the 10th round.

Judah landed a bad low blow and followed with a chopping right hand behind the head, both illegal punches.

As Mayweather doubled over in pain and limped toward a neutral corner, his uncle and trainer, Roger Mayweather, entered the ring and stormed toward Judah.

Referee Richard Steele intercepted him in the middle of the ring, but by then Yoel Judah, Zab's father and trainer, had stormed the ring.

He headed straight for Roger Mayweather and threw punch as security and spectators from the crowd of 15,170 filled the ring in a scary scene that lasted for several minutes, and left doubt as to whether the fight would continue. During the melee, Roger Mayweather tried to choke Judah.

After the ring was finally cleared, the fight resumed, and five seconds later the 10th round ended.

Roger Mayweather was no longer in his nephew's corner, having been ejected and replaced by assistant Leonard Ellerbe.

Skip Avansino, the chairman of the Nevada Athletic Commission, said the purses for both fighters -- $5 million for Mayweather and $1 million for Judah -- were being held pending a review of the fight film. In addition, Roger Mayweather was immediately suspended by the commission.

Judah promoter Don King was vocal in his call for a Mayweather disqualification because under the rules, no one besides the fighters and referee is allowed in the ring during a round.

"Once you get on the apron, the fight is a disqualification," King bellowed at ringside. "It should be total disqualification. There was a third man in the ring chasing the fighter during the round. The fight is over when the man stepped on the apron, and this man came all the way into the ring. We got to do this again."

Mayweather (36-0) cruised the final two rounds -- even embracing Judah before the 12th rather than simply touching gloves -- instead of continuing to lay punishment on him as he had been doing for the previous several rounds.

"I could have gotten him out of there, but the confrontation threw me out of my zone," Mayweather said. "Once that happened I decided to box the last two rounds and go home with the victory."

The win, on scores of 119-109, 117-111 and 116-112, netted Mayweather the tainted IBF welterweight belt.

When Judah (34-4) was the undisputed 147-pound champion, he was almost knocked out during a clear decision loss to Carlos Baldomir in January.

However, because Baldomir didn't pay a sanction fee, the IBF incredibly left Judah as the champion rather than vacating the title that now belongs to Mayweather.

ESPN.com at ringside scored it 116-112 for Mayweather.

HBO will air a replay of the fight next Saturday night at 9:30 ET/PT.

Judah, 28, had success early in the fight, and his southpaw style and quickness seemed to give Mayweather, 29, problems.

"I know Zab is a frontrunner," Mayweather said. "He comes on strong in the first six rounds and then he gasses out. We knew he would come out strong. That was our game plan, to relax and take our time. If there wasn't the controversy, the fight would've ended."

Mayweather turned the tide in the fifth round.

He landed a strong right that backed up Judah and then got his body shots and hooks going. By the end of the round, the fighters were cursing at each other, but Mayweather had Judah in trouble.

"We come from the same street," Mayweather said. "He called me 'Bitch.' I called him a bitch. He said what he said. I said what I said."

Mayweather wobbled Judah at the beginning of the seventh and Judah's nose was bleeding.

By the ninth, Judah's right eye was swelling and Mayweather was in complete control, outlanding Judah 28-2 in power shots in the round.

But then Judah landed the low blow and rabbit punch in the 10th and Mayweather's momentum came to a halt.

"I don't know if he did it deliberately," Mayweather said, "but Roger said during the week that if he did do anything, he was going to go in the ring like he did."

Judah said the low blow was unintentional.

"I was aiming for the body. I didn't mean to hit Floyd low," Judah said. "I had his number early on, but he's highly defensive. Mayweather is a good fighter. He's very quick. I make no excuses. He was the better man tonight. It was a good fight. I'd like to do it again."

With King howling about a rematch, Roger Mayweather clearly violating the rules and the fighters with no other obvious big-money fight that could be made for this summer, Judah may get his wish.

            Breaking News!!!!!

            NSAC withholds fighters' purses!
            By Mike Sloan

The purses of both Floyd Mayweather and Zab Judah have been withheld by the Nevada State Athletic Commission until a review of the tenth round near riot is made....Trainer Roger Mayweather has been placed on indefinite suspension for entering the ring.....15 minutes after the fight promoter Don King was still arguing with officials that Mayweather should have been disqualified when Roger Mayweather entered the ring. However, with thousands of winning betting tickets already cashed, don't expect the Nevada Commission to change the result now. (Photo: Chris Cozzone)

My question is how did Yoel Judah not get ejected from the fight he was the first one to throw a punch.

the fight could have been called on the illegal blow by Zab, could have been called for the shot after the illegal blow too. Roger Mayweather entered the fight during a Timeout called by the ref, so the entering the ring had nothing to do with the actual fight. And the ref penalized neither fighter. no point was taken for both low blows or the incident by Mayweather's uncle.

The ref did what all sports should do, LET THEM PLAY.

Yeah I understand letting them continue to fight but if Roger was kicked out I think Yoel was too. I think Yoel told Judah to low blow Floyd when he whispered in his ear during one of the rounds. Who knows, it was a good fight regardless.

                    Hatton-Collazo Set To Go - May 13, 2006

                    Hatton-Collazo Set To Go

Promoters Art Pelullo/Banner Promotions and Dennis Hobson and Robert Waterman/Fight Academy will present a sensational world championship fight card on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at the TD Banknorth Garden, located on Causeway Street in Boston’s Downtown North section. The main event will be televised live on HBO’s “World Championship Boxing” series.

In the 12-round main event, International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association and The Ring jr. welterweight world champion Ricky “Hitman” Hatton, 40-0 with 30 knockouts, of Manchester, England, will move up in weight and challenge WBA welterweight world champion Luis Collazo, 26-1 with 12 knockouts, of Brooklyn, New York.

Now 27 years old, Ricky’s outstanding performances last year stood head and shoulders above those of any other fighter. He was named “2005 Fighter of the Year” by The Ring, the Boxing Writers Association of America, and ESPN.com, among many others.

From TheRing-online.com, December 21, 2005: The Ring is pleased to announce that it has selected Ricky Hatton as 2005’s Fighter of the Year. Hatton is the first-ever British boxer to receive the award since its inception in 1928.

Hatton earned top honors by stopping long-reigning junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu at the end of the 11th round on June 4 in Manchester, England. In his second bout of the year on November 26, Hatton knocked out WBA junior welterweight titleholder Carlos Maussa in the ninth round in Sheffield, England.

“Not only did Hatton take the title away from one of the greatest 140-pounders of all-time and make his first defense against a highly rated challenger, he did it in the sort of entertaining and definitive manner that attracts fans and fills venues,” said The Ring’s Editor-in-Chief Nigel Collins.

Collazo, now 25 years old, won the WBA world title in April, 2005, with a 12-round decision against defending champion Jose Antonio Rivera in Rivera’s hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts. A talented lefthander, Luis successfully defended the title last August with a seventh-round TKO win against former WBC lightweight world champion Miguel Angel Gonzalez.

In the co-featured 12-round fight which will not be televised, International Boxing Federation featherweight world champion Valdemir Pereira, 24-0 with 15 knockouts, of Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil, will make his first title defense against former former European, British, and Commonwealth super banamweight champion Esham Pickering, 29-4 with 11 knockouts, of Newark, England. Pereira won the title on January 20 with a 12-round unanimous decision against Fahprakorb Rakkiatgym of Thailand.

An exciting lineup of supporting bouts is planned to complete the event. All bouts are subject to change without notice.

                    Ticket prices: $50, $100, $150, $250, $400, $500.

Tickets are available at: The TD Banknorth Garden Box Office, located on the West Side of the North Station Platform, to the right of the Pro Shop. Open Monday - Sunday: 11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. (The TD Banknorth Garden Box Office does not accept any incoming phone calls); and all TicketMaster outlets, by phone at 617-931-2000, and online at TicketMaster.com.

Mayorga: I'll KO Oscar in 6!

Mayorga: I'll KO Oscar in 6!

WBC super welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga held court for reporters today at Fight Club in Miami. "Honestly, I have not watched a single tape of Oscar De La Hoya's fights," said Mayorga. "I already know what his weaknesses are. He is crazy to think he can try to stand up in front of me and take the punishment I will deliver. Oscar's washed up. He was great at one time but logic and Mother Nature tell you he's washed up now. I have my work cut out for me because I'm fighting in his backyard but I would fight him in the backyard of his home in front of all of his fans and still beat him. I don't want to leave the decision up to the judges so I'm going to knock him out before the sixth round. I have been sparring with live chickens as they emulate 'chicken' De La Hoya best. They run just like he does. Most people don't understand that of all the fighters in boxing, Oscar is the one I like least. He's a pretty boy and it makes me want to defeat him. He shouldn't have gone down from that body shot that Bernard Hopkins threw. Everyone knows he took a dive in that fight. If he's a man like he says he is, he should show his Mexican pride and fight with me."

                        Roy Jones news..

ROY IS BACK -- Attorney Jim Thomas, who for years guided former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield's career, is now advising ex-champion Roy Jones Jr.

Thomas said Jones will fight in the summer against Prince Badi Ajamu, then hopefully take a step up in competition later in the year.

Thomas said Jones has patched up differences with HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg, who fired him as an analyst this year because Jones refused to attend production meetings.

Thomas said one of his goals is to ensure Jones relates better with the media than he has in the past.

Allan Green almost didnt make it.

Allan Green vs Donnie McCray on ESPN2

Allan "Sweetness" Green improved his career record to 20-0, defeating Donnie McCray in six rounds on Wednesday Night Fights.
did anyone see this yesterday? Green, incontrol most of the fight consistently got tapped by a left hand. He went down in during the 3rd round , he survived the round and went on later to win by KO in the 6th. I know he has been labeled as the next great thing, but no way he is ready for Calzaghe or Lacy.

I want both of those guys in the ringside so they can see the type of damage I'm going to cause Oscar and that way I know who the next two opponents I'm going to have - have them come over and study the way I fight. It's not going to do them any good.

Ricardo's Promoter Don King responded: Well, Tito will be there, Tito is coming. Tito will be there and I'm pretty sure Floyd will come, too, but Tito is coming.

After today's press conference, WBC super welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga threatened to pull out of Saturday's fight with Oscar De La Hoya unless he is paid $8 million dollars. Although Mayorga signed for $2 million "to lure Oscar into taking the fight," he stated "if I don't get my money, I'm not going to fight. I'm going to make what I deserve....I don't want it to be like the Trinidad fight where Trinidad got all the money." He stated that he was promised eight million and wants to be paid like a champion. Mayorga's promoter Don King said, this is the first he's heard of eight million dollar figure. Mayorga said he would announce later today whether he is fighting or not, "but I'm not fighting unless I get my eight million.
