I had the same EXACT problem when I started playing. What I found is that the cpu will be relentless if they're getting the better of the exchanges and will asolutely punish you if you're on the ropes. Last 2 matches I played as juan manuel marquez vs juan dias. ( I play on 90 sec rounds because the lack of clinching, referee interruptions make it impossible to get correct punches per round )......
First match it went 12 rounds where I got the unanimous decision winning 7 rounds to 2.....
2nd match I thought I was losing BIG in the cards( I fast forward during the in-between rounds because the trainers will tell you if u're winning or not- tkaes the suspense away) and I had to be gamble a bit in the last 3 rounds ....and I was KOed with 30 secs left in the 10th round....
turns out i was down only one round in the cards.
What I found out is that if you're successful in attacking the CPU, they WILL retreat....but if you're getting your head bashed in they will not let up in any way....pretty realistic to me.
before you even try to attack you have to master the defensive aspects of the game and block a lot of the cpu power punches....some boxers throw very little power punches some a lot...so you have to watch out for them...because if you get caught by their power punches the fight can turn in a dime and will force you to be extra passive and start losing in the cards.
When the cpu winds up for those huge shots, you gotta do the double tap backwards to avoid it or else you will keep getting hit.
hope it helps
