OS Roundtable: Pugilist Edition
With the return of the Operation Sports roundtable, the staff discusses which of the upcoming boxing titles - Prizefighter, Fight Night or Facebreaker - they are most looking forward to. Check out what the staff had to say in this weeks Operation Sports Roundtable: Pugilist Edition.Tags: None -
Yes. But we can still anticipate it's release."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob NeyerComment

Yep it is. Doesn't mean though we can't compare the anticipation for that games release to its competitors. If you can read this, you don't need glasses.Comment

I really hope this next fight night steps up to the plate with a nice open career mode with rankings and fluid gameplay. Also hope that its not a knockdown festival. Prizefighter really dropped the ball in those regards.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Re: OS Roundtable: Pugilist Edition
So they are most excited about Facebreaker?? Am I in the right site? That's like being more excited about a 2k arcadish football game with generic teams and players than about Madden. Fight Night 4 is hands down the most anticipated boxing game for true sports fans. And I don't think Prizefighter is getting the respect it deserves (not saying it's a great game, but it's not bad from what I've played so far).Comment

honestly man, this day and age i don't think the true sports fan gives a hoot about boxing in its current state. most matches are boring, with little action and most of the fight spent with the two boxers hugging each other and whispering sweet nothings into each others ears.
that's why i'm looking forward to facebreaker.
to me the average sports fan would rather have a Rocky-like boxing experience over mimicking the junk we see on HBO nowadays. If you can read this, you don't need glasses.Comment

Re: OS Roundtable: Pugilist Edition
The sport of boxing is not boring and the fights aren't junk. A good fight is as exciting and dramatic as any other major sporting event. I've seen at least a dozen fights on HBO and Showtime in the last year that were more exciting that, for example, last night's NBA game. But you'll only feel that way if you follow boxing, which few people do these days, that's a shame. I don't expect the average gamer to care about a sim boxing game (if they play a sim sports game it's only for sports covered by Sportscenter), but I do expect a little more from "sports gamers", especially when Tyson is in an EA game.
For many reasons (no good american hevyweights, no organized league, lack of coverage, boring tactical fighters, young kids not wanting to take up the sport for its brutal nature, etc) boxing is simply not that popular, and it takes a true fan to really appreciate it as a sport these days. However, UFC, despite some of these same problems, seems to be growing (despite a much lower skill level than championship boxing). On paper, FN4 will be the greatest boxing game to come out since Punch Out, and the best simulation of the sport ever made. But apparently gamers, even sports gamers, prefer the arcady feel of a Punch Out to a Madden of boxing, and that's because there's a huge gap between the following that boxing has compared to somehting like the NFL.Comment

Re: OS Roundtable: Pugilist Edition
Im sorry but i can give 2 craps about facebreaker. I want Boxers Road 2 for the psp translated to english with minor tweaks and Next Gen Graphics.
Boxing is the sweet science, and its pugilistic chess. You guys aren't boxing fans then. If im looking forward to NBA Jam over the new Live or 2k9. then im just not into basketball that much. Leave the boxing discussions to the actuall fans."I'm addicted to Video Games, and i chase it with a little OS." -Winston ChurchillComment

Re: OS Roundtable: Pugilist Edition
I was with you until that remark. How could you say UFC the most talented league of MMA has less skill than championship boxing. I won't go as far as to say it has more, but it has to be at least dead even. You have to train and be proficient at multiple styles in order to compete in MMA let alone be upper echlon. You must also know how ot defend against multiple styles, and dictate the fight to be the style you want. you have to guard punches, kicks, knees, elbows, takedowns, submissions. the fact that you have to take all of that into consideration puts it #1 in combat sports as far as skill required is concerned. I love boxing, but boxing is just 1 part of MMA."I'm addicted to Video Games, and i chase it with a little OS." -Winston ChurchillComment
