The main issue a ref has to evaluate is when the gloves are up, can he feel any resistance from the fighter. He has to stop the fight if after putting them against his chest and not getting for some sort of response and feedback. He really couldn't even get to that point and we pretty much at a 12 count.

    He got zero from Dawson.

I have seen some awful and questionable stoppages in boxing and mma...this absolutely was not one of them.
Ref said, "you okay, you okay?" Dawson put his gloves on the refs rib cage (20 second mark of the video.), the ref then said "pick them up."then instantly waved it off. Dawson was aware enough to nod, and put his gloves on the mans ribs. You are right about awful and questionable stoppaes and while this isn't one of those it was awful quick.

Dawson was no worse off than Khan was against Garcia at the time the ref stopped the fight.

But every single fighter knows that if you are that point, you absolutely have to put your gloves up. It is instinctive.

The combo of his legs, his eyes, and not being able to keep his hands up made it an easy choice for the ref.

Regardless, best thing for the division. Dawson is near shot and a boring fighter even in his prime.

This was a fantastic way to introduce a fighter who can cover two divisions so the matchups are absolutely endless.

Just another thing to add to the win column for boxing who has had a fascinating past two years.

The Top Rank/GBP feud has had the exact opposite effect that many experts predicted.

Dawson was out on his feet, but his instincts didn't say to go on, they said I've had enough. He may have not been able to put his up hands, but he didn't want to anyway.

I'm not sure too many fighters are in a hurry to fight this guy. Sure, he's beatable but he's also plain scary.

That was a huge statement for Stevenson, a guy who I honestly never heard of before this fight. Makes things really interesting now.

Dawson is done. He was never my favorite even when he was at his peak, and now there's really nowhere for him to go. He can't go down in weight (as we saw), and at his natural/best weight he just got knocked out in 1:16 of round 1 by a guy who prior to the night wasn't even in the top 3 guys in the division. He might be able to find another few fights, but I'll be very surprised if he ever has another meaningful victory.

For whatever it's worth, my take on the stoppage was that the ref saw his glassy-eyed, unfocused look and decided there was no point in continuing. He could have let him go on, but I think it would have just been Stevenson tee'ing off on him at that point. I would speculate that if you asked Dawson in an honest moment (or someone from his camp), even they would agree it was probably best for his health that it get stopped right then.

On a side note, that co-featured bout with Angulo vs Lara was a great fight! I dig Angulo's style, reminiscent of Margarito (although hopefully sans loaded gloves), and he seemed to be on his way to closing that show, but I credit Lara with staying sharp, moving, connecting with really crisp shots, and eventually getting the win by way of attrition. As much as I criticize Cuban professionals for their boring, amateur-heavy styles, Lara proved he has a ton of heart (getting up twice from pretty hellacious shots) and is willing to mix it up and throw punches for effect, not just for points. I would love to see those two go at it again.

I've been following him a little even before the Dawson announcement. At one time they had a good quality YouTube video of his KO loss to Boone, but that appears gone. The revenge rematch is shown in full. Boone is a journeyman, but a tough journeyman.

Can't believe I missed that fight. I didn't know it was on.

That fight was brutal!!! Gotta have a rematch for that one. Main event was good as well.

That's 'cuz I'm a moron and mixed-up the 2 boxing features from Saturday night...that's what happens when you DVR them both, then spend your Sunday recovering from Saturday and watching 5 straight hours of boxing while eating nothing but oatmeal and Gatorade....Angulo-Lara was the co-feature of the Maidana-Joesesito Lopez fight on Showtime (also a killer fire-fight, not to be missed if possible), not the co-feature for the Dawson-Stevenson fight on HBO. The Showtime card was much better this past weekend, although it started off with a real snoozer.

Everything is excusable except the oatmeal and Gatorade.

I need something relatively bland when in recovery mode, or I'm gonna see it again real soon. The Gatorade is clearly for rapid rehydration purposes...

I dig that Stevenson is a Kronk guy. Makes it easy to root for him. He can indirectly rep the "D".

I like the Kronk guys, but I also like the "Power" guys, a trait Dawson dismissed before the fight. As Jim Lampley said, "Power is power".
