Cooney showed a ton of heart and a lot of skill in that fight, as he had Holmes -- one of the most underrated and best heavyweights ever -- reeling for quite awhile.

    Take care,

Cooney showed a lot of skill in that fight? Except for a body shot that hurt Holmes the fight was one sided.

Yes Cooney showed skill in that fight. Holmes was in his prime and I view Holmes as one of the great Heavyweights. Cooney was within 2 points on 2 cards throgh 12 rounds and that included being knocked down 1 time.

I saw a reply of the Cooney-Holmes fight last year and it wasn't a close fight. I remember when it happened that there was alot of controversy over the scoring and that Cooney was the recipient of some generous judging. That fight was a huge black-white thing back then and Holmes was not a popular champion. Even the commentators were going overboard everytime Cooney threw a punch which made it seem closer. Homes was in total control the whole fight.

Cooney didn't embarass himself but he he clearly lost and did nothing after that and was only known for beating up old man Norton and was very overhyped.

Dan, I totally agree. My recollection of that fight (and subsequent controversy) is exactly like yours...

Lennox Lewis though I hated him was a excellent heavy weight he wasn't appreciated because he wasnt a knock out artist. The ultimate boxer puncher was a good champ even though his chin was suspect.

To me, Baby Joe Mesi is just this generation's Tommy Morrison... Another white hope that HBO tried to hitch their wagon to, until he got exposed by Jirov. I had a feeling Jirov was gonna expose him in that fight too, based on the classic bout he had with James Toney.

this is a boxing board right? and you are worrying about name calling?! LOL!

All these Roy haters are loving the fact that he lost his last two fights but also love to talk about their favorite fighters...who btw have all lost! Roy did things not many other fighters can claim to do. He moved weight classes and absolutely dominated everyone in his career. he will go down as one of the greatest boxers of all time whether the haters like it or not!

Doesn't matter if it's the boxing, wrestling, football or baseball board. It's common courtesy to not insult others. It's just something that isn't tolerated at OS.

He'll also go down as a clown that didn't know when to hang it up....Like the pitcher that just won't retire and gets shelled game after game(Steve Carlton) or the football player that just won't retire and switches teams at the end(Tony Dorsett, Franco Harris)...He would be much better off letting go of his boxing career at this point. If he gets KO'd again, people are going to think he's a joke....he'll go the way of Evander Holyfield.
