You CANNOT tell me UFC 3's ground game is better than Undisputed 3!!!
I don't care how tired you are of seeing Undisputed threads! The proof is in the pudding! There is no way EA UFC gameplay is better than UD3! The gameplay much more interactive, it actually felt like you had full control when it came to grappling. EA should really consider abandoning the current state of the ground game in UFC 4! Watch this video on UD3's grappling mechanics!

For UFC 3, I think adding ground sways would be nice. I loved being Anderson in full guard on my back and swaying shots and throwing shots back. Was quite fun even if the damage was minimal.
The block in full mount against punches in UFC 3 looks off. Sometimes there's almost an invisible barrier. The fist doesn't always connect properly and I think the animations need reworking, especially the blocking & the way it connects.
What was nice about UD3 were the speed of punches on the ground. Especially the hooks, they looked vicious. UFC 3 would be improved with reworked animations for punches.
I liked being able to hold a position in UD3. We have this from mount when you're on the ground, with the hold function. It should be available in more positions, and for ontop. Don't know how this will mess with online meta though.
Other than that, I'm not sure what else UFC 3 could take from UD3 in terms of pure ground game. What I did like about UD3 was that you could preload your transition, and attempt it quickly. So you'd roll the stick a bit, your character would move his legs and then you could move the stick a smidge more to attempt the transition, or roll the stick back to cancel it out.
It made it feel more connected to your character in a way. You could do this in full guard for example, put your feet on the guy's hips and then push off when you feel the time is right OR bring your feet back. It would essentially add a different timing.
Feinting punches would be a nice addition too. Especially as it's so easy to catch a strike from the bottom. You could fake left and strike right.
I'm not sure if it's possible to catch a strike into a submission in UFC 3?
What was a really cool one was where you jumped into guard with a punch in UD3 and ended up right into a triangle, then the guy would switch to an armbar halfway through. Stuff like that was nuts!
Another thing that UD3 had that I'm not sure this one does is, as you got up from the bottom, you could shoot a low double. That would always catch me off guard when the AI used it.
So yeah, in summary, UFC 3 could benefit from these:
- Feint strikes from the top.
- Ground sways.
- Taunts.
- Catching strikes into submissions.
- Hold button for positions.
- Reworking some animations.
- Reworking / tidying the block in certain positions .
- Chaining a takedown straight after getting up e.g. a guy gets knocked down and instead of standing straight up, he could stand up and shoot a takedown straight away.
- Soft / fast strikes & hard strikes.
- Adding cuts to elbows & a whole system for dealing with cuts.
I like both tbh.
Ud3 is a closer representation than ufc 3 because there was far more attention to detail. The original devs had been working on ufc since tapout since the Dreamcast and before then. They had a lot of time to flesh out their game. What’s sad is we’re hoping for the same ststem just reworked. Ud3 is the benchmark for mma games even with its poor striking. I just can’t honestly believe anyone would feel immersed by this ground game. Momentum transitions mess up denial responsiveness too many ways to get up. It’s catered towards the striker on the feet or on the ground.the range deduction is a tad bit ridiculous. You went from actually needing some kind of skill to deny to Absolutely no skill. I think ea should poll the community insRead of asking game changers. It doesn’t appear minus a few good ones (zhunter martial mind solid) they even care where the games going. The fact is we were indeed lied to and told the game would be more like undisputed and fight night. We only got fight night. -

Overall I like the grappling better in UD3. In my opinion it feels much more realistic in terms of how it plays compared to what we see in real MMA. The ability to clinch your opponent and shoot a takedown driving them to the cage with fluidity just feels so great. There are so many options you can choose from, and determine your playstyle just in the grappling itself.
You can approach it with a grinding, wrestle heavy style and clinch your opponent, take them down against the fence and just grind them out, or pick them up and slam them and start to fluidly posture up and down and land little elbows and hammerfists then immediately go to landing heavy GnP. Your opponent can sway strikes, and catch them and threaten with a sub. Ground movement, different animations for ground and pound that look and feel impactful. Submission chaining from multiple different subs. The list goes on. The one sole thing that I didn't like about the grappling was the reversals, they happened way to often.
I personally feel like EA3s grappling is stiff and motionless. It doesn't have much fluidity, and everybody has the exact same GnP animations. It just doesn't look or feel satisfying at all. The only thing I like about it, is the simultaneous transitions (which don't happen very often) and the rate at which reversals happen. I've been a striker in all the games, but I enjoyed the hell out of UD3s grappling, I can't say the same for EA UFC 3.

- Do you actually think that the ground game in the Tapout series developed into what you saw in UD1, 2 and 3? Really?
-What's funny is two of the 3 "good ones" you listed are against going back to the UD3 grappling system. One of them has been quite vocal about preferring what we have now with some changes.Comment

Re: You CANNOT tell me UFC 3's ground game is better than Undisputed 3!!!
Didn't know subjective opinions had proof.
I can't say I miss UD 3's grappling that much. I've probably beaten this point to the death but I feel the main thing that UFC 3's ground game is lacking is the ability to hurt guys with singular strikes. It feels very unsatisfying to throw 5 punches in a row to no effect but then the sixth punch suddenly drops him dead because his head meter dropped to 0% instead of 5%.
This has also made it so there are not many GNP finishes at higher levels unless there is a drastic skill difference on the ground. Compare that to stand-up where you can barely go half a round without a rock.¯\_(ツ)_/¯Comment

- Where did you get this information? Yukes developed the Undisputed series. Dream Factory developed the Tapout series. Anchor developed UFC on Dreamcast. 3 different companies.

Re: You CANNOT tell me UFC 3's ground game is better than Undisputed 3!!!
Undisputed was chaotic, beautiful... the ground and pound was perfect... it had bugs like the punch flick... but we gotta understand that was an old game and we didnt had the patches that we have now...
I remember beat gsp AI was very hard... so my strategy was grind in the cage use cage takedowns and cage strikes and win via dec or TKO... so much realistic... also in undisputed gnp was the best weapon to hold position, deny wasnt the heart of the grappling...Comment

UD3s grappling was very fun albeit unrealistic and functionally didn't have a high ceiling. I see UFC 3s grappling as something that could be expanded upon HUGELY and turn into something truly great given the time and effort

Aholbert ...but really apart from the obvious why can't it be done ? Just take the UD3 features and add them if not in UFC 3 perhaps UFC 4 .

It depends on what you want.
Do you want UD3's grappling (mechanics and animations)?
Well that would likely take a development cycle. They would have to scrap all of the mechanics and the rules behind grappling. Strip out grapple advantage. Change the mechanics to UD3's control system. Mocap all of the grappling animations for UD3 that arent in UFC 3. Likely re mo-cap some animations that may not work with the UD3 mechanics. Program the AI so that it is aware that grapple advantage doesnt matter anymore and program it to use the new grappling system.
Do you want UFC 3's current system with the missing animations and positions? Thats easier but it still takes mo-cap time. Thats feasible for UFC 4 but not for UFC 3 and it really never was once the dev team decided to focus most of the mo-cap on striking for UFC 3.
Now you may say "EA is a billion dollar company. Why cant they just give the UFC team more money for mo-cap sessions now". Well they could do that but that really isnt a smart business move. The game is 9 mos old and most video game companies arent willing to poor tens of thousands of dollars into content for a game that is that old...especially when you will likely have a new game in 2020.
So the bottom line is they can do it but there are reasons why they wont. Thats not even including the fact that its not universal that everyone wants UD3's grappling added to the game.Comment

Wow nostalgia I wonder where that game would have been in 2018 with the same developers?!!

Re: You CANNOT tell me UFC 3's ground game is better than Undisputed 3!!!
One one hand, the grappling in UD3 had 1 major flaw: the punch flick/twitch reversal, which cheaters would use to completely negate the ground game if they were adept at that
On the other hand, it had so many more little things that made the ground game feel more real and fleshed out:
- Effective ground and pound
- Ground sways
- More positions
- Catch submissions, even ones involving the cage
- Non-automatic reversals (in UFC 3 you auto-reverse if you deny early enough, but sometimes you don't want that).
- More special transitions
- The ability to delay your transition, not just feint
And that's just the ground. In UD3 the clinch and ground were synched much better also, you could reverse throws and not just block them.
Finally, I miss the automatic counter takedowns. Sure, you have grapple advantage in UFC3, but since it's still about a gauge filling, dedicated strikers will never get taken down, especially if you are aggressive, which is the complete opposite of real life.
I feel like UFC3 ground game is a pure waiting game/staring contest. The one who moves first, loses, because they get denied and lose a ton of stamina, so entire matches devolve into endless feint spamming in the guard. Another example is the sprawl bottom. Sprawl top can't do anything because the back take transitions are so slow and you'll just get reversed, all sprawl bottom has to do is wait for 30 seconds before the ref stands them up.
Although UFC3's grappling is much better than it was at launch, it still misses so many key components that UD3 had down, and to me seem fairly easy to implement.Comment

I still pop it in just to enjoy the ground game. The only thing I hate is how easy it can be to sweep, but no MMA has gotten that right yet. They always make sweeps way too easy for some reason.

For me it deosn't have a better system...I give the actual grappling system to EA UFC. But in terms of what is possible in UD3's grappling, it beats EA UFC for sure and felt much more like a complete mma game because of it.Comment

Re: You CANNOT tell me UFC 3's ground game is better than Undisputed 3!!!
Grappling in UD3 feels so much more interactive and realistic and is alot more fluid. It feels like Im actually grappling and being active. When grappling in EA UFC 3, first of all you get this big HUD which totally kills immersion, and secondly you just hold the damn stick to fill a meter which then plays an animation. Its so boring and it doesnt feel interactive at all.
Ground and pound is also alot better in UD3, better and more animations, the punches look like they have actual power behind them.
I have been going back to UD3 alot recently just because of the grappling. I have fun grappling in that game whether Im on top or on bottom. In EA UFC3 I feel like shutting the game off as soon as it gets to the ground, thats how much I hate it. How anyone can think the ground game is better in EA UFC 3 is ****ing beyond me.
Personally I think the grappling needs to be completely reworked for UFC 4.Comment
