The Fight Guys talk about new UFC 4 info, including Career Mode and CAF

TL;DW: The game is very CAF focused, you create a fighter with the base tools and as you progress, new cosmetics are unlocked for your fighter. Career mode isn't all that different, but I hope they fixed a few key things.

Unfortunately (for us sim guys if this is true) the game has been designed to be even more fighting game friendly, to draw in casual fans and designed so a fighting game fan can look at it and say, "this is like Mortal Kombat, or Street Fighter".

Honestly, if they've spent two and a half years on throwing realism out the window to focus on making it even more competitively balanced and ignoring realistic mechanics because they would "break the meta" or "wouldn't be good for competitive play", then I'm going to be very disappointed.

At the very least, I hope they changed the grappling. And if they did go down this super competitive focused route, I hope they at least added a sim mode. It should be an MMA game first and foremost, not a fighting game with an MMA facade.

If any of this is true, this will be an easy pass for me.

    Guess we'll see soon enough.

I watched the video. I didn't understand how the guy connected career and earning virtual currency to unlock cosmetic changes to ranked online championships and eSports? He said it as if one was tied to the other in some way.

Yeah, if they ignored 2+ years of feedback on here to pull the ultimate "attract the casuals" trick where all the resources and then some are thrown to do just that, I'd be more than disappointed. Career being mostly the same would mean that they completely ignored so many brilliant suggestions on this site. The guy said you unlock the boxers once you complete Career. Some speculation on my part — this would mean the boxers would likely play a role in that. I would imagine you'll get an opportunity to fight one of them on the side like Conor fought Mayweather, the scripted story would require it so you could "transcend the sport". Then again, you could only do that as a 205+ guy but I do think Fury and Joshua will probably be part of "Career".

Nothing on Universe Mode, judging by the supposed leaks we shouldn't expect anything in the way of that either.

If they're really going for full eSports and MK-like recognition that would be very disappointing if it actually means tossing any further serious pursuit of realism out the window. Then again, GPD was very sarcastic about a comparison to MK the other day so I hope that after it's all said and done, the MMA aspect of the game would shine more than the comp one after all.

But yeah, that's all speculation on my part, based on rumours. There may be a lot of truth to it but let's wait and see how right those guys really end up being.

Yeah I don't know. Guess we'll hear more about it soon. I'm not against the idea of CAFs in Ranked. Was FNR4 that way? I remember one of the FN games having a similar approach like that.

Kind of ties in with that stupid survey they had about zombies and ****.

And for the rest, probably going to skip if I'm going to get rocked 10-15 times a fight again.

          Oh boy. Hype fading...

I don't get why they think it exites people to customize a CaF's appearance. So what? After 3 fights you get to afford a tattoo or a custom trunks? Come on, EA... I hope they put in cosmetics that makes sense, like your own dojo with training gear. When I - and lots of people I assume - make a character, it's supposed to be made from the start and not change ever. This isn't an RPG.

But these were just scraps, so perhaps nothing to worry about.

You know, if we had our own MMA studios within ultimate team, I would actually ****ing love this idea. Compete online for virtual money In order to upgrade and customize your own training facility? Sign me the **** up. Unfortunately EA isnt ambitious with their sport titles anymore

If this is actually true, then it'll be the first time I'll pass on a UFC game since the Dreamcast. I enjoy fighting games, but if I'm playing a MMA game, I want it to try to do its best to be a MMA game.

Competition balance and casual friendly are not synonymous. Just saying.

In the context of the video, he was talking about casuals being fighting game players who are MMA casuals, not video game casuals - that’s how I was using the word casual here. Sorry for not clearing that one up beforehand.

Is that why he mentioned CAFs and Ranked in the same breath? Oh my God, that alone sounds like pretty much the biggest "**** you, sim players" possible.

Sometimes I make the mistake of browsing the cesspool that is /r/easportsufc and see people begging for features like customized walk-outs and post-fight interviews so I guess these people who want custom characters to be more prevalent exist.

I can't really agree with the idea that being comparable to Street Fighter or MK is a good thing because I think they are completely different demographics. How many people here actually play traditional fighting games? Half of you haven't played one as it is evident by y'all trash takes whenever one gets brought up.

Fighting game fans are finicky about things like game balance so a ranked mode with custom characters is a massive turn-off (though so is an intentionally unbalanced roster) and the games have low skill ceilings compared to the other games so why would they convert? If you look at the best-selling fighting games of the past few years, you have games like Smash and Dragon Ball Fighterz which have massive IPs and are very casual-friendly.

While there should unquestionably be a ranked mode with real fighters, I'm not opposed to an alternative mode where the characters have limited stats and moves without any grinding.

EDIT: Reminder that this forum is a drop in the bucket that is their player base so even though some opinions are popular here doesn't necessarily mean they have mass appeal.

                          Isn't this Quick Fight though?

Sure, the stats and moves aren't limited but that's where you can showcase your CAFs online. I have no time for such players but I wouldn't mind playing people who have tried to create a real life fighter — that's why I'd like to be able to see the actual fighter and his stats in the selection screen so I know what I'm dealing with. But obviously that can't really work for Ranked because choosing between even the best real-life CAFs and a cartoon 100-everything-guy is arbitrary.

I digressed a little bit but the point of this post was to ask what you mean by the bolded part.

                            Sure.

I think the primary competitive mode should only allow in-game (=non-CAF) characters similar to the ranked mode in UFC 3. However, there could be another mode separate from the current ranked mode where everyone uses a CAF but there would be some sort of a restriction on your stats and moves. Think of it as USADA-regulated Ultimate Team. This idea has its own challenges (e.g. How to make all stats relevant so guys don't make strikers with 1 overall clinch throws, takedowns and submission offense to boost their other stats to 100) but I think it's a healthy way to involve more player expression if that's what they're looking for. I thought UFC 2's Ultimate Team was surprisingly fun when both players were using mid-to-high 80s overall UT characters.

When it comes to your CAFs based on real fighters, I can't really think of an alternative to the currently existing Quick Fight mode which is a bit of a mess because I for one disable CAFs since I do not want to deal with 100 overalls.
