I mean, UFC 1 had the L-defence but I don't consider it part of the grappling system. It was an issue online but I don't think about when I evaluate what the system was like.

Here's my thing, though, if you remove the punch flick, that side control issue is gone. You can block strikes forever and while damage bleeds through slowly, it doesn't really happen on sim energy either.

So are we looking at the game's grappling in the ranked experience, or just the mechanics as they were intended? Fakes were never a part of EA UFC 2's design, but the ranked community used them and they became an actual part of the game (they're mentioned in the UFC 4 tutorial).

If we are looking at it from a ranked perspective, then yes, UD3's grappling was busted. However, when you had two willing/non exploiting players, it provided a significantly better and more realistic experience than UFC 2/3/4 under the same conditions.

The reversal problem is easily worked around. You simply fake your transition (which is undeniable, transitions have two stages in Undisputed), and bait out their reversal, leaving you with a window to transition.

More player room for error doesn't matter when nobody ever ends up making those errors. In practice, UFC 4's grappling isn't that much deeper than UD3, with the exception of bridging transitions. I don't count GA, it's just a meter to increase transition speed by punching or faking and actively contributes to the awful ranked playstyle.

The funny thing is, UFC 4's grappling could be improved ten-fold in one patch, the fix is so easy. Simply remove timed denials and implement a preemptive denial system with consecutive 3/4 denials max, and make reversals a flick again like Undisputed. You'd only need one new animation, the reversal flick. The rest can be repurposed to work.

If you don't want someone to move, you lock your guard down. That's realistic and Undisputed 3 let you do that. However, it wasn't possible to do it forever. It was balanced. In EA UFC, good luck trying to transition against any high level player without going through the motions of building GA and sitting in one position for 15 seconds at a time. It's awful and I don't know how anyone can enjoy it or find it realistic in anyway. There's no strategy to it.
I may be the only one who never had a problem with this "punch-flick" exploit, or I was lucky I never run into someone who knew how to exploit it, and I played online a lot.
Also side control was pretty easy to escape from, I don't feel it was OP at all.

It was an issue but never as big as the ea apologists here want to make it out to be. Game was nearly perfect on all fronts and had more depth than any mma game to fate.

You guys were pretty big into customization this year with all the lion heads & **** like that, but we can’t even choose what shorts we want before a fight? A feature that was in older titles already? We shouldn’t even have to ask for this. @EASPORTSUFC

If you guys want removed features back, you need to use #Fix - Insert Issue - on Twitter.

You guys saw how that changed EA's entire direction and plans for Madden Franchise right?

It was frustrating watching UFC 252 and seeing Stipe use double unders and Chito Vera use elbows from full guard to help them win their fights, and know those things aren't possible in the latest UFC licensed game.

                - They removed fighternet, so you can’t see other player’s stats and record breakdowns.

                - Removed clinch transitions for the SUB clinch fighter (all you can do is block and move backwards to try to escape - you can’t shoot a takedown or transition. The person who initiates the clinch remains the DOM fighter for the entire clinch duration).

                - Removed the ability to freely transition from postured ground positions, whether on top or bottom. All you can do is punch, posture back down, or block. Exception being if you have massive GA (GA ruins the grappling imo. So corny and turn-based. Destroys activity and immersion).

Way late to the party but I was drinking when the PES v FIFA discussion popped up and don't post while under the influence.

FIFA was originally arcade, PES was Sim in PS2 days. Then they flipped around '08 and FIFA was the sim for PS3 gen. Finally, FIFA was the sim til around '16, where PES got a new engine and they flipped again. FIFA World Cup is the most "Sim" a football game has ever been. You are all correct, depending on when we are looking at the series.

Credentials: 12 years playing, 6 years coaching, owned all football games on PS1,2,3,4.

I will admit I haven’t played the game since it dropped due to my disappointment from ea access. But this perfectly explains my biggest issue with the clinch mechanics. In a real fight if someone initiates the clinch it is often more of a battle for control, both fighters trying transition for dominant position to impose their game plan. In UFC 4 I felt like all I was allowed to do was escape. I assumed I didn’t know the buttons or mechanics well, but if it is true like you said that the DOM fighter is always just the person who initiated it that just feels like the Wrong way of looking at the clinch game
