Yea thats in the game, in one of the new ground videos theres a diving punch from standup to ground at about 1 minute in. It looks great.

Another thing you don't seem to understand is the depth of this game - it's not just striking, but grappling on the ground and standing and takedowns etc. The striking actually has 3 or 4 'dimentions' too. you have distance or probing strikes, 'pocket' strikes, and clinch range strikes, as well as in-clinch strikes and ground and pound. Besides punching there are elbows, knees, kicks....I'm not sure where your expectations are comming from. I've played every mma/kickboxing/boxing game and don't understand your position on this. The animations are not 100% lifelike, but that shouldn't come as a suprise or cause dissapointment imo.

the animations are very nice - example the new vids:

and one more excuse to post the canadian cover!

I honestly don't see this game as the 'underdog'. I believe this game will be recieved extremely well all across the board and set the new standard for fighting games, even sports games. I don't think any of the games mentioned by the OP have better animation overall either.

edite *another thing i forgot to mention. Some of the punching looks stupid to me, but not because of hte animation, but because someone is standing still getting hit with 5 same-arm punches in a row - that would look strange in real-life. When you see someone block, go for a leg kick and get hit with a quick 1,2, it looks great.
I agree on this. Why is there an immediate need to compare this to FN4, a game that is a completely different sport? They are both fighting sports, but UFC incorporates different layers that seem to be pretty well represented in this game.

As far as this game goes, the most glaring thing I notice is the blank stare the fighters give while being hit. That's where I think the animations seem to struggle. Other than that, some of these videos are showing a lot of promise.

I think the game will be great, but I have one problem. Everytime a fighter is hit with a good shot he just falls to the canvas. That is not the case in real UFC. There should animations where a person does not fall after a strike, but just stumbles back a few feet. In the game the fighter either takes the punch like its nothing, or he gets knocked into next week by it. That's my only gripe.
I can't wait for this game to come out!

yeah, i couldn't put my fingeron it, but now that you mention it, they could have added like a cringe or wincing look on their face, and shut their eyes as hard as they can.

Watch the kick boxing video with Matt Hughes and GSP. GSP rocks Hughes with a head kick and Hughes stumbles back and is caught with another kick that KO's him.

Re: The games animation is weak in my opinion

I have no confidence in THQ being able to produce a competent MMA game. For years their wrestling games have been mediocre. So it's foolish to think their UFC game will be any better. And with all the rumors circulating about THQ's financial difficulties, I'm all but certain that the game will suffer because of it.

I watched the ground game video and it looked pretty bad. The guy on the bottom, instead of closing guard or trying to control the top guys posture, or setting up butter fly guard, the bottom guy just lays there like and idiot, doesn't even try to get wrist control and laughably tries to punch from the bottom.

I'll give it a rent. but thats about it.

I've seen every single scrap of info about this game, and every single person who has played the game has done nothing less than rave about how good it is. So if it's "foolish" to think it will be awesome, than I'm the leader of the short-bus.

Your second paragraph is strange because if I'm playing the game, I could do many things that you wouldn't do (and hence think I'm stupid).

Name a combat game that looks like a better representation of the sport; it seems like you're made up your mind that it's mediocre already.

The thing with old games is we look back on them with more fondness than they deserve. For the time games like Pride FC or Tecmo Bowl were awesome. Those games aren't nearly as awesome now. They are great for nostalgia and even fun to play for a bit but they really don't compare to what we have now IMO.

Pride has had the greatest feature in a MMA game to date

when creating a player you could create combos for your fighter making them entirely original.

You honestly believe that was the AI on the bottom? I was under the impression they had 2 human players and they let the bottom one just lay there for the "tutorial" purpose. If they let the AI play against their human, he wouldn't be able to pull off certain moves with ease to showcase how it's done in the game. I'd be willing to bet money that the AI won't play like a punching bag on its back. At least not on higher difficulty levels.
