    Chuck Liddell

Clearly, last night was the end of the Chuck Liddell-era in the UFC. The guy that once had an iron chin has now been dropped in his last 5 fights - 4 of them he lost.

The only way Liddell could return to the Octagon is if he followed Randy Couture's path. That is, retire for a year or so, and then come back, but this time as a HW. Liddell's going to be 40 this year so he doesn't need to be messing with trying to cut 25-plus pounds for fights anymore, when it's clear he's no longer a top-5 LHW. A move to HW could be good and would give him a way to get a few more fights in as his losses as a LHW wouldn't really count against him if he moved up to HW.

Unfortunately, I don't think Liddell is willing to adapt his game enough to ever be successful in the cage again. He became too dependent on the right hand and was unwilling to utilize kicks (he started as a kickboxer) or work any kind of defensive game. He supposedly worked with American Top Team prior to the Shogun fight on keeping his hands up, but what did we see against Shogun? Hands down low and he got clipped. His unwillingness to check leg kicks or to really utilize his wrestling also hurt his game in the ever-changing world of MMA.

So, what will Liddell's legacy be? From 2003-07, the dude was probably the scariest guy in the cage to fight. He could KO anyone and couldn't be taken down or knocked out. That's what I remember most about Liddell. That, and the fact that once he lost his title, he refused to incorporate anything new into his gameplan, and that led to his demise.

I always enjoyed Liddell's fights because the crowd was always super into them, so in that aspect I'll miss seeing him in the cage. But, it's time for him to step aside before he gets seriously hurt and allow the younger guys to rule the division.

Bye, Chuck. Thanks for the memories.

As I told my friends I was watching it with last night...

It would be a dream come true if I was ever good enough at anything that I could lose and still get a standing ovation.

Chuck will always be one of the top fighters in UFC history. He was never the best P4P guy, but he put on some amazing fights and deserves all the credit in the world for making UFC as mainstream as it is now.

He's been found out...no one is afraid of him like his older opponents were, the aura and mystique is gone.

Not to mention, he's too slow and one dimensional to compete at the highest level nowadays.

He had his time, he needs to hang 'em up.

          Re: Chuck Liddell

I don't think it is really fair to say he has been "figured" out. People have known for a very long time what the iceman was going to do in the cage...they just couldn't stop it.

I think it is more fair to say father time has caught him, and his speed and reaction time have greatly decreased along with his ability to take shots.

Watching his punches last night the were painfully slow, and his overl athleticism just did not look to be all there, even defending against the shots.

Chuck will still go down as one of the greatest of all time, he was never considered top P4P fighter, because unlike GSP or Anderson, Chuck never used a full set of skills.

Cheers to the Iceman, as a HUGE chuck fan i hope this is the end of the road for him, i really do not want to see him get knocked out again it kills me when my fave fighters lose hehe. Last night was so disapointing cause chuck looked in PHENOMENAL shape, the tools have just greatly deteriorated.

            Re: Chuck Liddell

People figured Chuck out, he used to be way more of a complete fighter in his earlier career than he's been lately. He used to take people down, use his wrestling more, throw kicks, etc. He morphed into a one punch KO artist and he thought he could get by on that.

Fighters realized that his defense is shoddy and you can outpoint him (Jardine) or that all you have to do is time him and wait for him to throw that overhand right which is all he has (Rampage and Rashad).

Of course age and cagewear took it's toll but his flaws and style were picked apart and exposed badly.

you have to give props to chuck liddell. Hes at a point at his career when he knows hes not on top, and hes not as young or as fast as he was. But he still goes in the octagon and gives his best.

Its not easy being a fighter and especially if you keep losing, so chuck even though you're struggling dont worry we still know you're the chuck everyone loves.

I think Chuck Liddell should fight Mark Coleman or Randy Couture for his last fight

Well from the sounds of things Chuck is going to retire, he apparently hinted at it last night and Dana White came out and said that Chuck is done so unless Liddell has a change of heart and is willing to go and fight for a different organization I dont see him fighting anymore. Here is a link to a yahoo column that talks about it....

As I said in the other topic,Dana said on wensday Chuck was done if he lost.
That was a bit hard to watch, don't know why they bothered with the...oh I don't know,I'll talk it over with the family...stuff. Dana knew he was done,Joe knew he was done and Chuck himself very obviously knew he was done. I was hoping for a "thank you Chuck" chant.

He'll probably be remembered as the first main stream star.

I don't think the UFC would ever let him fight in another org. If he really wanted to keep fighting I think the UFC would give him a shot, but I don't think he is going to fight again. I think he wants to, but he knows he lost a step.

I really disagree with this assessment, chuck used his wrestling very very early in his MMA career because his striking hadn't really peaked yet. During chucks prime championship run, say from Randy II to Babalu II chuck did not take down a single opponent. And come on all he has is an overhand right?? The only person he really KO'd with that trademark overhand was Alistair Overeem in Pride. He finished randy off with a straight right hand twice, Randleroids with a left hook, babalu with an uppercut and headkick. Jeremy Horn got dropped a few times, straight right hand not overhand being more then one of them. Ortiz he finished the first time with a combination of straight punches uppercuts and left hooks. Dropped Vitor belfort with a left hook.

Chuck hit the end of his prime and decline when he fought Page and Jardine, to say he got exposed is like saying Larry Holmes exposed muhammed Ali. They are declining fighters whose age caught up with them. A stretch comparing them as fighters but both relied on athletic skills, Ali slipped punches with his hands down, chuck avoided with footwork and relied on his iron chin. I mean you think the Chuck who walloped randy twice would lose to keith jardine??

And to the person saying Chuck has only knocked out wrestlers, while he has a great history against grapplers. He does hold dominant wins over Alistair Overeem who had alot of success against the widely considered number 1 k1 striker Remy Bonjansky and had good success against mirko crocop recently, and hes also taken out Vitor belfort and Amar Suloev who are both respected strikers.
